Cryptomeria japonica – bonsai

03:01
Cryptomeria is a genus of only 1 species; C.Japonica. Though commonly known as the Japanese Cedar it is in fact not a member of the Cedrus family but a part of the Taxodiaceae family along with Yews. Cryptomeria Japonica is an evergreen, monoecious, coniferous tree native to the forests of China, Korea and Japan. Known for its naturally conical habit and its thick, red, fibrous bark, the C.japonica has narrowly wedge-shaped light-green (fading to dark-green) leaves arranged in 5-ranked spirals around its shoots. Species/varieties suitable for bonsai culture Many varieties of C.Japonica are commonly used for bonsai for instance; Elegans, Elegans Compacta, Pyramidata. There are a number of dwarf varieties that require less frequent pinching out such as Elegans nana and Globans nana however, as slow-growing varieties these can take considerably longer to achieve thick trunks and take longer to style. Bonsai cultivation notes Positioning Cryptomerias need a light position out of direct sun during the summer with good ventilation. During the winter, some protection is required from frosts. Leaves commonly brown during the winter but brighten back to green in the Spring. Feed Every 2 weeks Spring to Autumn; from bud extension in April feed high nitrogen, a balanced feed from June and low nitrogen to strengthen the root system from August onwards. Repotting Every 2 years in mid-spring as new buds start to grow. Older specimens can be repotted according to root development. Repot in a standard mix. Pruning Continual, regular pinching out is required throughout the growing season to spread energy throughout the tree and to keep the trees' shape. Cryptomeria will backbud very readily from points all over the tree given regular pinching. Do not use scissors to cut foliage as this causes the cut edges to brown as with Junipers. Hard pruning can be carried out in Spring, however care must be taken to produce a clean cut as the bark and cambium layer separates easily from the wood. Wiring Wiring should be carried out between April and July to allow time for branches to heal before the cold of winter. The branches are very supple though they can separate easily from their junctions so care must be taken. Bend branches over 2cm in thickness slowly over the course of a few weeks as creating rapid movement over too short a period of time can result in the bark splitting. It is possible to prevent this by binding with raffia before the applying wire. Pests and Diseases Red spider mite and scale can cause problems, try to prevent this with regular misting of the foliage. Propagation Sow seed outside in Spring. Cuttings root very easily in late summer/early autumn from ripewood. Styles Most commonly seen representing its natural form, the formal upright with single or multiple trunk styles in extra-small to medium sizes. Branches are presented on a horizontal or slightly drooping plane with the foliage trained up above so that the branch structure is revealed.

The branches are horizontal but the tips droop over slightly giving it a graceful look. Give this evergreen plenty of room to grow. It looks great arching over a wall. The needles are very dark green and make a beautiful backdrop to other colors of foliage. It is one of the few conifers that will grow in the shade. Thuja occidentals ‘Smaragd’- Emerald Green arborvitae is a beautiful pyramidal evergreen that makes a real statement in the garden. It retains its beautiful emerald green color throughout the season. Smaragd means emerald in Danish where it was originated. The foliage is very tight and requires almost no pruning except to even out the top. Thuja occidentalis ‘Degroot’s Spire’ – This variety of Arborvitae has a tall, narrow form with twisting dense green foliage. It can be used as a hedge or a screen and it is also great for tight spaces since it only gets to be 4.5’ wide. It will get 20’ tall at maturity and prefers full to part sun. Chamaecyparis obtuse ‘Nana Gracilis’ or Dwarf Hinoki Cypress is an gorgeous evergreen in the garden. It has exceptional foliage which is dark green and resembles curved cups. Its slow growth (3-6” per year) and irregular shape makes it an interesting specimen in the garden. It prefers sun to partial shade and will grow to a height of 8’ tall and 6’ wide. Pinus thunbergii ‘Thunderhead’- This variety of Black Pine has brilliant eye-catching white candles ( the tips of the branches producing new growth). This creates a striking contrast to dark green needles. It is a medium grower at 6-12” per year and will mature to 15’ tall and 12’ wide. As all Black Pines, it enjoys full sun and mildly acidic soil. Ilex aquipernyi ‘Dragon Lady’- Dragon Lady is an upright female holly which requires a male for pollination and berry production. Good pollinators would include Ilex ‘Blue Stallion’ and Ilex ‘Blue Prince’. Dragon Lady is a narrow pyramid reaching 10 to 20 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide. It enjoys sun to partial shade. It has very attractive glossy foliage. Pinus partiflora ‘Templehof’ - This is a variety of Japanese White Pine. The most attractive feature is the beautiful steel blue foliage. It is a dense evergreen tree with a strong central leader and a rounded form. It is a slow-grower and will eventually reach 20-30 feet tall and 10-20 feet wide. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil and is able to handle salt exposure. Cryptomeria japonica ‘Yoshino’ - This variety of Japanese cedar has a very symmetrical, pyramidal form that matures at 30-40’ tall and 20-30’ wide. It has lime-green to blue-green needles. Foliage is soft to the touch, unlike many evergreen trees and may turn a bronze color in the winter. It produces 1” round fruiting cones at the end of shoots. The bark is reddish-brown and exfoliates in strips. Ilex opaca ‘Satyr Hill’ – This is a female variety of American Holly with a compact pyramidal habit. It likes Sun to part Sun and will get 20-30’ tall by 15-20’ wide. It has large red berries that appear in October and will generally last until Spring. Many cultivars with forms such as being globed in shape, columnar, or narrow pyramidal, tend to be near buildings, doors, and walkways. Other forms which are larger are used for screens and buffers that are planted in rows. Note if you pick up at the farm or just need them dropped off we will do that ....call 215 651 8329 for a price quote and availability. The form of arborvitae is small, medium, or large depending on the cultivar. Some reach 50', others only 3'. Most prefer full sun to partial sun. Planting in dense shade conditions should be avoided. A moist , well drained, loamy soil in full sunlight are ideal conditions for growing healthy arborvitae. These plants will tolerate rocky, clay, urban conditions of heat drought and pollution. The most important pest we have is bagworms which must be controlled to prevent complete defoliation. Some cultivars have multiple leaders which also prove to be a detraction for the plant. Pruning out multiple leaders in some cultivars is a simple remedy. Our most popular Arborvitae is the Emerald Green arborvitae. Many people prefer to spell them Arbor Vitae . It is a bright light green color and narrow in shape. It makes a distinctive and impressive natural fence. It is easy to grow ,plant, and keep in shape. The Hetz Midget arborvitae is a dwarf globe variety. This is a good choice for along walkways and gardens. This is a tough plant that is easy to install and not going to cost a lot. It will maintain its color in the winter and will withstand snow loads well. We carry these plants in 2 and 3 gal. pots. The prices on these dwarfs vary from $15 to $30 depending on size and quantity ordered. Another small arborvitae that we grow in pots is the Rheingold arborvitae. This is a small globe shaped plant that has a golden green cast to it in the summer and a bronze winter color. We also have the American Arborvitae known as "Tiny Tim".This arborvitae grows in zone 2 - 7. Its is a needled evergreen in the Cupressaceae Family. It will grow in height from a half a foot to 1 foot tall. Its spread will be about 1 to 1.5 feet.

See how to trim and Care for Your Trees ...American Arborvitae

Bill has different take on all subjects... See more at http://www.billytrash.com Bill sells trees aqnd shrubs as well. He specializes in windbtreaks and barriers for screens and buffers. Call him at 215 651 8329 Choosing a Tree Choosing a tree should be a well thought-out decision. Tree planting can be a significant investment in money and time. Proper selection can provide you with years of enjoyment as well as significantly increase the value of your property. An inappropriate tree for your property can be a constant maintenance problem or even a hazard. Before you buy, take advantage of the abundant references on gardening at local libraries, universities, arboretums, parks where trees are identified, native plant and gardening clubs, and nurseries. Some questions to consider in selecting a tree include: What purpose will this tree serve? Trees can serve numerous landscape functions including beautification, screening of sights and sounds, shade and energy conservation, and wildlife habitat. Is the species appropriate for your area? Reliable nurseries will not sell plant material that is not suitable for your area. However, some mass marketers have trees and shrubs that are not winter hardy in the area sold. Even if a tree is hardy, it may not flower consistently from year to year at the limits of its useful range due to late spring freezes. If you are buying a tree for the spring flowers and fall fruits, this may be a consideration. In warmer climates, there may not be a long enough period of cool temperatures for some species, such as apples, to develop flowers. Apples and other species undergo vernalization -- a period of near-freezing temperatures that cause changes in the plant, resulting in the production of flowers. Be aware of microclimates. Microclimates are very localized areas where weather conditions may vary from the norm. A very sheltered yard may support vegetation not normally adapted to the region. On the other hand, a north-facing slope may be significantly cooler or windier than surrounding areas and survival of normally adapted plants may be limited. Select trees native to your area. They will be more tolerant of local weather and soil conditions, enhance natural biodiversity in your neighborhood, and be more beneficial to wildlife than many non-native trees. Avoid exotic trees that can invade other areas, crowd out native plants, and harm natural ecosystems. How big will it get? When planting a small tree, it is often difficult to imagine that in 20 years it could be shading your entire yard. Unfortunately, many trees are planted and later removed when the tree grows beyond the dimensions of the property. What is the average life expectancy of the tree? Some trees can live for hundreds of years. Others are considered "short-lived" and may live for only 20 or 30 years. Many short-lived trees tend to be smaller ornamental species. Short-lived species should not necessarily be ruled out when considering plantings. They may have other desirable characteristics, such as size, shape, tolerance of shade, or fruit, that would be useful in the landscape. These species may also fill a void in a young landscape, and can be removed as other larger, longer-lived species mature. Does it have any particular ornamental value such as leaf color or flowers and fruits? Some species provide beautiful displays of color for short periods in the spring or fall. Other species may have foliage that is reddish or variegated and can add color in your landscaping year round. Trees bearing fruits or nuts can provide an excellent source of food for many species of wildlife. However, some people consider some fruit and nut bearing trees to be "dirty."

Dark Blue and Dark Green Weeping Evergreen Trees ...Atlas Cedars and Norway Spruces

http://www.digatree.com/Location.html call 215 651 8329 Dark Blue and Dark Green Weeping Evergreen Trees ...Atlas Cedars and Norway Spruces When you get to the nursery or garden center where you will buy your arborvitae, pick out the healthiest, most robust plants that have no evidence of disease or insect damage. The potting medium should be moist, but not wet, and the roots should well dispersed in the medium. Arborvitae that have roots growing from the drainage holes or circling the top of the pot are less desirable. Many people choose to buy arbs from a mail order company, which is perfectly acceptable. However, realize that most woody plants purchased from mail order catalogs will be shipped dormant and bare root, that is, without any soil attached to the root system. Such plants may be smaller in size because of the expense of shipping. It is important to plant such material immediately upon arrival. Generally it is best to purchase one-year-old material from mail order companies since this material is more vigorous and will transplant better. The larger material that is offered is often composed of the less vigorous plants held over from previous years. Most large sized arbs are balled and burlapped. Don't buy any arbs bare rooted over 3' tall. Any plant larger should be balled and burlapped. Cedrus Deodara Patti Faye Himilayan Cedar Bell FL 32619

02:01
http://naturecoasttree.com The magnificent Cedrus Deodara 'Patti Faye' is a very specialized tree that has a distinct 'blue' color and even more so when it flushes with new growth. Unlike other 'blue' deodaras which are tall and usually narrow, this specialized cultivar very much resembles a Christmas tree with its pyramidal shape, green needles and graceful branching. With a trunk and branches that are breakage resistant, these trees can easily grow 40 to 60 feet tall and span 20 to 30 feet in width. The tree farm at Nature Coast Tree Corp, which is located in Bell Florida, is the only grower in the state of Florida that has a large inventory of these trees available that are up to 30' tall and are all grown in Florida sandy soil. Also known as a Himalayan Cedar, the Cedrus Deodara 'Patti Faye' does best in full sun and can handle most soil types but prefers good drainage. The name Cedrus comes from Kedros, which is the ancient Greek word given to a resinous tree. The Sanskrit name, Devadaru, can be translated to mean "Tree of the Gods"! So, it's safe to say that you can use this tree to create a heavenly landscape that is unique in Florida. The beautiful and fast growing Cedrus Deodara 'Patti Faye's from Nature Coast Tree Corp, have been used at Disney World and Universal Studios. A very unique and different tree, this evergreen is a standout in any landscape. And, Nature Coast Tree Corp. has these beautiful, unique trees available from 12 to 30 feet tall. For more information about the Cedrus Deodara 'Patti Faye or Nature Coast Tree Corp., call 386-935-9349 or email [email protected] or visit their website at naturecoasttree.com

Tatton Park Japanese Garden Knutsford Cheshire.

06:23
Hatton Park Japanese Garden Knutsford Cheshire The Japanese Garden was almost certainly the result of Alan de Tattons visit to the Anglo-Japanese Exhibition at the White City in London in 1910. It was a fashionable trend which resulted in a team of Japanese workmen arriving at Tattons gardens to put together what is now rated to be the finest example of a Japanese Garden in Europe. The Shinto Shrine and artefacts contained within the garden are all reputed to have been brought from Japan especially for the construction of the garden. The garden itself is in the style of the tea garden which does not reflect the strict discipline of other Japanese styles, e.g. the dry garden or the stroll garden. In this form of art, the Japanese portray many scenes, both mythical and factual, but all must harmonise with nature. The important elements of plants, stones and rocks are carefully placed to produce a natural balance. Stones and rocks are selected for their form, particularly their representative shape. It is not unusual for a mound to be built capped off with white stones representing the sacred snow capped Mount Fuji, the most important mountain in Japan. Lanterns come in all shapes and sizes having different functions such as the specially shaped snow viewing lanterns, designed to trap as much snow as possible on the top of the lantern to add to the beauty of the garden in Winter. Flowers as such are not given as much consideration, however tree shapes are of great importance and as a result pruning techniques are critical, taking many years to develop. This garden uses many Japanese Maples or Acers which you would not always find in the true Japanese gardens. Attention is always paid to the form and shape of the plants as can be seen from the Bamboo at the west end of the garden. Many evergreen plants are also included here which add to the winter interest. The garden was restored in 2000/2001 for the Japan Festival and was the result of over 14 years of research with input from various Japanese specialists. The project restored the garden to its original state when first created for the Egerton family in Japanese style with a heavy western influence.

This is a plant that requires little work. See our photo gallery of Arborvitae at our farms Selecting quality arborvitae for the home landscape : When you get to the nursery or garden center where you will buy your arborvitae, pick out the healthiest, most robust plants that have no evidence of disease or insect damage.
