21st October 1966: 144 people killed in the Aberfan disaster

02:32
At 9.15am on the 21st October 1966, 116 children and 28 adults were killed when a colliery spoil tip above the Welsh village of Aberfan collapsed. Approximately 150,000 cubic meters of mining debris from waste tip No. 7 surged down the mountainside, of which 40,000 cubic metres swept in to the village. Within seconds a large area of the village was inundated with a thick slurry up to 12 metres deep. A farm and twenty houses on Moy Road disappeared under the surging waste, but the most devastation was wrought on Pantglas Junior School. The landslide smashed into the school and filled the classrooms, which were on the side of the school facing the mountain, with rubble. The children and teachers, who had only arrived a few minutes earlier, were buried alive. Over half the children enrolled at the school died. Hundreds of people including parents, miners and rescue workers struggled to rescue those trapped beneath the waste. Their efforts were hampered by the continuing flow of water and mud from the tip as well as the lack of space in which to work due to the number of people who had descended on the village to help. The National Coal Board and its chairman, Alfred Lord Robens, were heavily criticised in the aftermath of the disaster. Lord Robens didn’t go to the scene until the evening of the next day, and claimed that the disaster was caused by ‘natural unknown springs’ despite evidence that the NCB was fully aware that the ground beneath the tips was unstable. The remaining tips were only removed after government intervention.

Aberfan disaster: Archive footage of the coal tip landslide that killed 116 children

02:36
Fifty years ago, on 21 October 1966, disaster struck in Aberfan, Wales. 116 children aged between 7-10 and 28 adults were killed when a landslide destroyed the local school and several houses. The avalanche happened after a build-up of water in a coal tip above the village. The National Coal Board (NCB) had ignored concerns of local authorities about the location of the tip. They were found guilty of extreme negligence by a tribunal in 1997. For more videos, head over to http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/tv

THE WELSH MINER - A HARD LIFE

02:12
The life of a Welsh miner can, at best, be described has hard, dangerous and unrelenting. Yet there was a special character to the pit towns which made them different to other industrial settlements elsewhere in the United Kingdom. Valley societies were stable and safe places to live with an instinctive democracy and cohesion of classes, where individuals were respected for themselves and their own personal qualities. Featuring extensive interviews of current and ex-miners, period imagery and archive footage, this DVD delves into the often humourous but always proud history of Welsh mining. Westray Mine disaster - The Last Shift - the fifth estate

29:11
On May 9th 1992 an explosion ripped apart the Westray Coal Mine in Pictou County, Nova Scotia killing 26 miners. The Fifth Estate and the Journal co-produced this story about the tragedy. The mine was opened the year before despite misgivings that the geology of the area was unstable and prone to large volumes of methane gas. The Federal Government was reluctant help the private company starting the mine after numerous reports cited geological concerns. But after heavy lobbying the mine opened. From the beginning miners complained of safety issues, rock falls, high methane gas levels and large amounts of coal dust. The company's output and quality of coal were disappointing. Inspectors visited the mine 49 times. Critics claim inspectors didn't take the conditions seriously enough and that the company was negligent. Government officials say it's not at fault. But the miners say even if the mine were to reopen they would never go back.Linden MacIntyre hosts.

Coal Mine Disaster in China

00:56
Another coal mining accident in China to tell you about. 17 miners are trapped in an underground mine in the city of Yuzhou in Henan Province. Here's more on the story. For more news and videos visit ☛ http://ntdtv.org Follow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevision Add us on Facebook ☛ http://on.fb.me/s5KV2C On Sunday sixty-two miners were working underground when their pit was flooded with water. 38 miners managed to escape by themselves and another seven were rescued. It is the latest in a string of accidents to plague China -- home to the world's deadliest coal-mining industry. As water was pumped out of the pit, gas fumes also began to rise... making rescue work more difficult and dangerous. A string of explosions at coal mines across the country, in recent days, have killed dozens of Chinese miners and left a number of them missing. China is the world's largest producer and consumer of coal. In 2007 alone, approximately 3,800 Chinese coal miners died in gas blasts, flooding, and other related accidents.

Knockshinnoch Colliery Disaster 1950

04:48
Nearly 60 years ago one of the worst mining accidents in the history of British coal mining occurred in the Ayrshire village of New Cumnock. For several tense days in September 1950 the worlds media descended on the small Ayrshire mining village. The world paused with baited breath as rescuers battled bravely against all odds to reach the 129 men trapped deep underground when a field above where they were working caved-in, flooding the mine workings with thick liquid peat, cutting off all means of escape. This is a truly remarkable story of how ordinary men worked tirelessly in a race against time and the forces of nature to achieve one of the most dramatic and remarkable rescues ever attempted.

MINE DISASTER - SOUND

01:05
By far the worst mining disaster in recent New Zealand history, at the Strongman State Coalmine with nineteen man killed instantly by a sudden explosion. Hampering the efforts of rescuers, fire breaks out in the mine making it impossible to recover the bodies of four of those killed in the blast. Cement and timber is taken below to seal the fire off and experts consider it may be many months before the section can be re-entered. At Greymouth an air of tragedy and shock as the funeral cortege moves towards a combined burial service. 232 Dead In Turkey Coal Mine Disaster

00:47
Women wailed uncontrollably, men knelt sobbing and others just stared in disbelief outside a coal mine in western Turkey as rescue workers removed a steady stream of bodies from an underground explosion and fire that killed at least 232 workers. The fate of more than 100 miners remained unclear in one of Turkey's worst mining disasters. Recep Tayyip Erdogan postponed a foreign trip and gave an updated death toll figure during a visit to the coal mine in Soma, about 250 kilometers south of Istanbul. The energy minister said the deaths were caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/3d281c11a96b4ad082fe88aa0db04305/Article_2014-05-14-Turkey-Mining%20Accident/id-30d7c29be77f440da3ca4a39ba09bfd6 http://www.wochit.com
