Sugar cane is one of Kenya’s most important cash crops. Currently, most of the pulp, or ‘bagasse’, left after the cane’s juice is extracted goes to waste. In this film, John Mwero, an engineer at the University of Nairobi, talks about his PhD research on adding the ash left after burning bagasse to cement. Not only does doing so recycle this readily available by-product, but it also strengthens concrete. Mwero’s PhD was made possible through a scholarship with AMSEN (the African Materials Science and Engineering Network). AMSEN is part of RISE (the Regional Initiative in Science and Education), a programme designed to strengthen higher education in Sub-Saharan Africa. Mwero argues that without the access to other universities’ equipment and the networking opportunities with other African academics that the scholarship provided, it would have been impossible to obtain his PhD in Kenya.

As computing engages with other disciplines, it is important to create bilingual students who deeply understand computer science as well as another discipline. A panel of higher educational professionals from MIT, Northeastern University, Georgia Tech, the University of Pittsburgh, and Columbia University discuss their experiences in mixing computer science into other domains at the level of a degree program. Panel includes: Eran Ben-Joseph, Head, MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning and Professor of Landscape Architecture; Carla E. Brodley, Dean, Khoury College of Computer and Information Sciences at Northeastern University; Charles Isbell, Executive Associate Dean, School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech; Rob A. Rutenbar, Senior Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Pittsburgh; and Jeannette M. Zane Beadles, #68 of the Denver Broncos, is a Mechanical Engineering graduate of the University of Utah. He started all four years of his college career on the offensive line and in 2010 was drafted to the Denver Broncos. Zane could not imagine living or playing in another city! Zane was quickly embraced by the Denver Community and now, in 2013, is proud to kick off Zane Beadles Parade Foundation. Zane's Parade Foundation focuses on enriching the lives of children who are faced with unfortunate situations by providing them with new experiences they would not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in. Zane has selected the Elephant to represent his Foundation because Zane has found unique characteristics of this particular animal within himself. Elephants represent good luck, protection, inspiration, power and strength. These qualities are given to kids to overcome the obstacles in their lives. Zane believes, "Life is about the journey, not the destination." He will leave a footprint on your heart with his dedication and support! Zane has had a successful career with the Denver Broncos and here are the highlights at a glance: He is a fourth-year offensive guard who played all 16 regular-season games in each of his first three professional seasons. He ranks third among offensive linemen who entered the NFL in 2010 with 46 career starts. He is the only player, offensive or defensive, to participate in 100 percent of Denver's regular-season snaps (1,143) in 2012. He was tied for fifth among 16 game starting guards with only 1.0 sack allowed during the 2012 season. He opened all 16 games during the regular season and started both playoff contests for the Broncos in 2011, helping the league's top rushing offense (164.5 ypg.) set the franchise single-season rushing record. The Sporting News' All-Rookie Team in 2010 appointed Zane after opening eight contests at left guard and six contests at right tackle, becoming the first NFL rookie since Andre Gurode (Dal. 2002) to start at least six games at two of the three positions along the offensive line (C, G, T). He was selected as a member of the 2013 AFC Pro Bowl Team. In 2012, Zane was selected to represent the Denver Broncos for the NFL wide Walter Payton Man of the Year award. He was nominated for his outstanding community service and support. Currently, Zane's Parade Foundation supports the following organizations: Brent's Place: More than 14,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. Many of these pediatric patients will undergo a bone marrow transplant or other life-saving treatments, which require a "Safe-Clean" home, vital for a successful recovery. This means they require a place free of common viruses, bacteria and germs that can prove fatal while their immune system is recovering. As the only "Safe-Clean" housing facility approved by Children's Hospital Colorado in the entire Rocky Mountain region, Brent's Place is suitable for the entire family. It is close to treatment facilities and free of charge, alleviating fears and removing emotional and financial burdens while providing the necessary bridge between the hospital and home. Over the past 2 years, Zane has raised over $50k for the families at Brent's Place and the demand for their services continues to rise. Approximately, 109 families called Brent's Place their home away from home in 2012. The cost for a family to stay at Brent's Place is $93 with the average stay being 109 days. Thanks to Zane's involvement, he has been able to sponsor full stays for families as well as allow them to attend programs to relieve the stress in their lives. With your support, Zane will be able to help more families and provide more programming such as attending tours of Sport's Authority Field and Denver Bronco games! The Colorado Association of Black Professional Engineers and Scientists (CABPES): CABPES is a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging African-American and underrepresented youth to pursue career choices in the engineering and applied science professions. By doing so, the number of minority technical professionals will increase to a level that better represents the minority population, while assisting these industries in meeting the growing demand for engineers and scientists. Zane Beadles Parade Foundation will gift scholarship opportunities for Denver Metro area youth pursuing careers in engineering and applied science programs with your help.

Carter G. Woodson: Who was the 'Father of Black History' and how did he change attitudes to race in America? Today's Google Doodle celebrates Black History Month and Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950), the great African American scholar commonly regarded as "the Father of Black History". Woodson grew up in rural New Canton, Virginia, in the aftermath of the American Civil War, the son of freed slaves James and Eliza Riddle Woodson. James Woodson, a Union veteran, relocated his young family to Huntington, West Virginia, so that his son could attend a new high school for black students then under construction, hoping to give Carter the best possible chance of achieving the education he and his wife had been denied. The financial realities of their situation however meant that Carter frequently had to miss school to help out on the family farm. Undeterred, the young student taught himself the fundamentals of English, maths and science and became accomplished in those subjects by the age of 17. He was forced to begin work in the coal mines of Fayette County at this point, temporarily frustrating what had been astonishing academic progress. In 1895, aged 20, he was able to resume his studies at Douglass High School in Huntington and received his diploma in under two years. After three years of teaching, he returned to Douglass as principal before relocating to the Philippines between 1903 and 1907 to serve as a school supervisor. Woodson's ongoing quest for self-improvement through study saw him earn a Bachelor of Literature degree from Berea College, Kentucky, receive honours from the University of Chicago and complete a history PhD at Harvard in 1912, indicating a truly voracious appetite for learning. He was only the second African American to win a doctorate, following in the formidable footsteps of W.E.B. DuBois. It was while serving as Dean of Arts and Sciences at Howard University in Washington, DC, in 1915 that Woodson and his colleague Andrew L. Jackson published The Education of the Negro Prior to 1861, a pivotal work addressing African American history, a subject he felt had been badly neglected and crudely misrepresented by white academia. Woodson would write over a dozen more books on the subject over the course of his career as he began to turn his thoughts away from simply studying black history himself to raising awareness and making it accessible to others. His next venture was founding the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, inspired by his time in Chicago, a collective whose goal was to formalise the education of adults and young children on their nation's past. The association duly produced a periodical to support their work, The Journal of Negro History. Woodson hoped such public outreach projects - as opposed to studies undertaken within the insular, cloistered world of universities - held the key to bringing about more enlightened relations between black and white citizens. Woodson believed that racism could be overcome and was "merely the logical result of tradition, the inevitable outcome of thorough instruction to the effect that the Negro has never contributed anything to the progress of mankind." In 1926, he was involved in promoting Negro History Week in Washington, DC, the forerunner to Black History Month. Intended to coincide with the birthdays of abolitionist Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln, the celebration promoted the organised study of African America, which Woodson felt had been "overlooked, ignored and even suppressed by writers of history textbooks and the teachers who use them". Students at Kent State University would pick up his baton when they founded the first Black History Month on 1 February 1970, with President Gerald Ford recognising their project nationwide six years later. Woodson continued to promote black American scholarship throughout his career as an educator, writing a widely-read regular column for Negro World, a weekly publication founded by Jamaican activist Marcus Garvey. Carter G. Woodson died of a heart attack in Washington in 1950, aged 74. His proud example set the stage for the heroes of the Civil Rights Movement and he is rightly remembered to this day as a remarkable man and a true pioneer. His insights into racial prejudice and the political machinery of oppression are as timely today as they ever were: "If you can control a man’s thinking, you don’t have to worry about his actions. If you can determine what a man thinks you do not have to worry about what he will do. If you can make a man believe that he is inferior, you don’t have to compel him to seek an inferior status, he will do so without being told and if you can make a man believe that he is justly an outcast, you don’t have to order him to the back door, he will go to the back door on his own and if there is no back door, the very nature of the man will demand that you build one

Webcast sponsored by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and hosted by the Museum of Anthropology. "Assert, Defend, Take Space: Aboriginal Youth Conference on Identity, Activism and Film" was a day-long conference on issues of concern to Aboriginal youth. Artists from the Claiming Space: Voices of Urban Aboriginal Youth exhibition were joined by young filmmakers and activists from across Canada. Building off of the screened films, panelists discussed themes of youth identity and politics, the objectification of Indigenous women, and environmentalism and youth activism. "Claiming Space: Voices of Urban Aboriginal Youth" is an exhibition that looked at the diverse ways urban Aboriginal youth are asserting their identity and affirming their relationship to both urban spaces and ancestral territories. Unfiltered and unapologetic, over 20 young artists from across Canada, the US, and around the world define what it really means to be an urban Aboriginal youth today. In doing so they challenge centuries of stereotyping and assimilation policies. This exhibit will leave visitors with the understanding that today's urban Aboriginal youth are not only acutely aware of the ongoing impacts of colonization, but are also creatively engaging with decolonizing movements through new media, film, fashion, photography, painting, performance, creative writing and traditional art forms. Artists in the exhibition include Alison Bremner (Tlingit), Deanna Bittern (Ojibwe), Jamie Blankenship-Attig (Nlaka’pamux, Secwepemc, Nez Perce, Muskoday Cree), Kelli Clifton (Tsimshian), Jeneen Frei Njootli (Vuntut Gwitchin), Ippiksaut Friesen (Inuit), Clifton Guthrie (Tsimshian), Cody Lecoy (Okanagan/Esquimalt), Arizona Leger (Fijian, Samoan, Tongan, Maori), Danielle Morsette (Stó:lō /Suquamish), Ellena Neel (Kwakwaka'wakw/Ahousaht), Zach Soakai (Tongan, Samoan), Diamond Point (Musqueam), Crystal Smith de Molina (Git’ga’at), Nola Naera (Maori), Kelsey Sparrow (Musqueam/Anishinabe), Cole Speck (Kwakwaka'wakw), Rose Stiffarm ((Siksika Blackfoot, Chippewa Cree, Tsartlip Saanich, Cowichan, A'aninin, Nakoda, French, & Scottish), Taleetha Tait (Wet’suwet’en), Marja Bål Nango (Sámi, Norway), Harry Brown (Kwakwaka'wakw), Anna McKenzie (Opaskwayak Cree, Manitoba), Sarah Yankoo (Austrian, Scottish, Algonquin, Irish and Romanian), Raymond Caplin (Mi’gmac), Emilio Wawatie (Anishanabe) and the Northern Collection (Toombz/Shane Kelsey [Mohawk], and the Curse/Cory Golder [Mi’maq]). Also included are works from the Urban Native Youth Association, Musqueam youth and the Native Youth Program. The exhibition was curated by Pam Brown (Heiltsuk Nation), Curator, Pacific Northwest, and Curatorial Assistant Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers (Blackfoot, Blood Reserve/Sami, northern Norway).

Some stories were never meant for children. Ivine's journey from Syria is an Unfairy Tale no child should ever imagine, let alone endure. For 14-year-old Ivine, the war in Syria has taken a huge toll on her home, family, and dreams. “I’d have nightmares about those scenes, and I’d cry. I’d wake up, and my pillow would be soaking wet from all my tears.” We bring her story to life. Share this story. Time is money: An animated infographic showing the top three economies throughout history. Does China have the world's largest economy? Is China's economy bigger than America's? Time is money–the world's largest economies throughout history. At the start of the Common Era, India was the world’s largest economy, followed by China. The far-flung Roman Empire came a distant third. A thousand years later, it looked almost the same. But third place shifted to Byzantium, in modern-day Turkey. Five hundred years after that, Italy returned, rich from renaissance trade. Over several centuries, other European powers vied for third: initially France, and then Britain. China and India swapped places. After the industrial revolution, the top three economies accounted for less than half of global output. In the 20th century, America dominated. China temporarily fell away. Russia made the top three. As did Japan. Britain dropped down. Now the modern world resembles the distant past: China and India are back, along with a single Western economy. And America’s preeminence is over. China overtakes US as the world's largest economy. Cat lovers have no doubt seen it before: the intense focus, followed by a claws-extended, acrobatic leap, some serious hang time and a not-always-graceful landing. Watching a cat get airborne is always exhilarating, but even more so when it weighs 350 pounds. At the Oregon Zoo, a new enrichment game is helping to keep the African lions fit while bringing out their explosive predatory instincts. Keepers have been using a mega version of this standard pet store item — constructed out of butcher paper and dubbed the “Leaping Lion Toy” — to mentally stimulate the big cats while encouraging natural hunting behaviors. November 7, 2018 Program Introduced by KHC Fellow, Julio Meza Speaker: Hayes P. Mauro, Associate Professor, Queensborough Community College, Art & Design Department Short Films: Kent Monkman’s Brothers and Sisters, Released 2015, 3 mins and Stolen Children, Residential School Survivors Speak Out, Released 2015, 18 mins Two short films based on original archival footage and the accounts of survivors of the Canadian residential schools will be screened. A talk will follow by Professor Mauro based on his book, The Art of Americanization at the Carlisle Indian School. He will speak about the social reformers, usually Christian evangelicals, who wished to Americanize Native Americans and African Americans, along with newer immigrants from southern and eastern Europe. This meant transforming them into culturally acceptable entities who looked, acted, dressed, and thought like an idealized middle class Anglo-American. Needless to say, this had ramifications for both race and gender definitions.
