🇿🇦 What's the future of South Africa's mining sector? | Inside Story

24:56
South Africa has some of the world’s biggest reserves of platinum, gold, iron ore and coal. But mining now makes up less than 7% of its economic output, a steep fall from 20% in the 1970s. Mining companies are blaming low prices and soaring production costs for their plans to cut thousands of jobs at a time the country is struggling with high unemployment rates. Mining is also intertwined with race relations in South Africa. The people who work deep underground in often dangerous conditions are overwhelmingly black, while the executives overseeing them are mainly white. Some of the firms have pushed back against government plans to make them bring on more black shareholders. So, is it a losing battle for the mining sector? And can South Africa move away from its dependence on commodities? Presenter: Mohammed Jamjoom Guests: Lebohang Pheko - Senior Research Fellow at Trade Collective - a non-profit think-tank. 52:40
Despite holding one third of the world's mineral reserves and generating two thirds of the world's diamond production, the mining sector in Africa has traditionally been viewed as high risk. Reasons for this include underdeveloped infrastructure and regulatory frameworks and well as the drag of bureaucracy. How does Africa's Mining Outlook compare to that of other emerging markets? Joining CNBC Africa to discuss these and other matters are; Andile Sanqu, Vice President of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, Wickus Botha, Mining & Metals Sector Leader, EY Africa; Philip Lindop, Head: Corporate and Investment Banking, Barclays Africa; Bernard Swanepoel, Director, To The Point Growth Specialists and Kevin Hodges, Mining Industry Champion, IDC.

Outlook for World Coal Consumption and Implications for Climate Change

01:34:03
Speaker: Dr. Howard Gruenspecht, former Deputy Administrator, Energy Information Administration Commenter: Nikos Tsafos, Senior Fellow, CSIS and Adjunct Professor, SAIS ERE Program Strategies to limit climate change must first focus on ways to diminish coal use and resultant CO2 emissions. The three top emitting countries are China, the US and India. Coal consumption is declining in the US as a result of cheap natural gas and cheaper renewables. China consumes over half of the world’s coal but is now seeking to reduce its coal consumption. India has pledged to expand renewable energy, energy efficiency and nuclear power, but will likely continue to use coal to fuel needed economic growth and poverty reduction. Meanwhile, coal use has leveled off in Europe and Russia. But it is expanding rapidly in other Asian countries which, along with China and India, will hold the key to future coal demand. These countries include Indonesia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Pakistan and others. Join us for a discussion on the outlook for world coal demand. The Coal Vote: Showdown in West Virginia's Midterm Elections

14:42
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News This year's midterm elections are projected to be the most expensive in American history. One of the most notable races, where outside interests are pouring in millions of dollars, is in West Virginia's third district — and the campaign is centered on one thing: coal. The coal industry has dominated West Virginia for the past 150 years, exerting great influence over its economy and politics. Obama’s push to drastically reduce carbon emissions to combat climate change has convinced many West Virginians that the federal government is waging a “war on coal” and, in turn, on West Virginia, as mines close and jobs are cut. The backlash has placed 19-term Democratic incumbent Nick Rahall under fire for his perceived affiliation with Obama. The Koch brothers and other out-of-state energy interests have seized this opportunity to oust Rahall, leading Democratic State Senator Evan Jenkins to switch parties and run as a Republican. VICE News traveled to West Virginia's third district to cover the race between the two candidates as they fight to prove who will be coal's greatest champion, and spoke with locals about coal's outsized importance in the region. Mining Outlook: Palladium price to surpass Gold

07:09
Bonnie Hughes, Business Development Manager for the Mining Group UK at Royal HaskoningDHV talks to Nick Batsford this morning for a mining outlook. Here are some key points: First looked at is the Uranium chart. The largest producer of Uranium, Kazakhstan, is reducing the amount of production by 20% over the next 3 years. Kazakhstan is actually responsible for 40% of the metal's production so in total there will be an 8% reduction. There are other factors effecting a supply demand switch for Uranium, which Bonnie goes onto explain.  China is on path to challenge the US as the home on atomic power, as the chart in this segment shows.  Cobalt market is the next topic spoken about by Bonnie. The electric vehicle market in particular is discussed and Bonnie's view is there is still a bit longer to wait until it comes into fruition, around 2025. It also seems to Bonnie that China, like they have with lithium is trying to secure their sources of Cobalt.  The Cobalt Price chart is then analysed by the pair.  Coking Coal is used in Steel production, and had a price rise last year. Bonnie thinks this price rise will be sustained and continue. But why? Watch the segment to find out!  Also discussed is the overtake in price of Palladium over Platinum which has not happened for 16 years. Bonnie explains the reason for this. Bonnie thinks that palladium will surpass the price of Gold this year, for the first time ever! This is due to the fact it is a supply and demand commodity.  Watch the full segment for Bonnie's full analysis.  Core Finance is part of Core London, a TV production company based in Belgravia, London. OUTLOOK 2014 - Sierra's Silver Lining: Cusi Mine To Drive Growth

07:04
Kitco News' kicks off its "Mining Minutes" Outlook 2014 series with Thomas Robyn, VP of exploration with Sierra Metals, to get his take on the mining industry. "Everybody will be cutting costs," Robyn says. "Without exploration [though], you do not have projects come into the pipeline that end up going out producing cash as an operating mine." Robyn says the biggest issue miners are facing in the coming year is that investors are pulling away from the commodities space so it is difficult for these companies to raise capital. "We are spending a lot of money on exploration and development," Robyn says. "Big growth for Sierra is from [its] Cusi [mine] and it is predominantly silver growth," he adds. Robyn also expects to see increases in copper production for the coming year for Sierra. Tune in now to hear his outlook for the industry in 2014. Inside a Cursed Appalachian Mining Town

25:20
In the late 1800s, traveling preacher Robert Sheffey cursed the town of Ivanhoe, Virginia, after witnessing what one female resident describes as “houses of ill repute, fighting, drunkenness, and a rejection of his ministry by the townspeople.” Legend has it that Sheffey condemned the sinful town to sink into the earth and be consumed by the pits of hell. “Whether you believe in it or not, after that happened, we lost everything,” says the same Ivanhoe resident in this short documentary. “We have nothing.” Today, Ivanhoe is even plagued by sinkholes—multiple houses have disappeared entirely into the earth. 05:10
It is no secret that 2016 proved to be a positive year for the mining sector, with some gold and silver stocks rallying over 100%. Could this happen again in 2017? Giving his outlook on the sector, Exploration Insights’ Brent Cook joins Kitco News on a special Outlook 2017 edition of the Gold Report, where he shares some insights as to what he thinks is in store for miners next year. ‘My expectation is that we’re going to see the precious metals back off into early next year as the markets continue its [...] unjustified rise, and the dollar as well,’ he said. ‘But reality is going to set in next year and once it does, I expect investors move back into precious metals.’ Cook also shares his top mining picks and what effects, if any, President-elect Donald Trump can have on the sector in 2017. Jordan Roy-Byrne's gold price and mining stocks outlook

23:34
Subscribe to our newsletter at http://www.goldmoney.com/goldresearch. Episode 99: GoldMoney's Dominic Frisby talks to Jordan Roy-Byrne, publisher and editor of TheDailyGoldPremium (thedailygold.com). They discuss the performance of gold mining stocks and his outlook for this (at the moment troubled) market. Jordan also gives his take on where the gold price and broad equity markets are heading. Roy-Byrne emphasises the importance of stock picking and technical analysis for ensuring success in gold stock investing. They talk about the good performances seen from royalty companies and opportunities in development ventures. Roy-Byrne also espouses on the relationship between gold and gold stocks, and states that there is actually no historical track record for large gold stocks outperforming gold over the course of a secular bull market. He believes that gold stocks are currently at a low point from which they will start another cyclical bull run. Jordan also hints at a negative correlation between gold stocks and the broader equity market over the last 1-½ years. He expects a 25% correction in the S&P 500 -- during which he expects gold stocks to perform well. And finally, he expects more consolidation in gold and silver before the next up move -- which should take gold well past $2,000/oz. This podcast was recorded on 11 February 2013.
