Living underground in the Australian Outback

05:17
There's a treasure hunt going on in Coober Pedy, Australia, where opal was discovered a hundred years ago. As much as 80 percent of the world's opal supply comes from Coober Pedy's mines. But with summertime temperatures soaring to 120 degrees, the town features hundreds of "dug out" homes, burrowed into the rock and naturally cooled. Seth Doane explores the underground town, complete with bar, beauty salon, bookstore and hotel.

It portrays how over the last 150 years mining has made Australia rich, yet created an unending struggle over who shares in the wealth. It reveals how mining helped forge democracy yet has repeatedly plotted to influence politics and even overthrow democratically elected leaders. Whilst mining has also been deeply damaging to Aboriginal society, ironically in the 21st century, it may be aboriginal people's best hope of economic self-determination.

🔥 Australia's worst mining disaster Dalyston No 20 Shaft Historical site Wonthaggi

09:28
Two significant coal mine disasters took place here at the no 20 Shaft in Dalyston, Victoria, Australia 📌 The first occurred during the first year of operation on the 20th February 1931, when 4 men died underground. Then disaster strikes once again, on the 15th February 1937, in which another 13 men died underground this explosion was so powerful ,it blew the cage out of the shaft some 40 ft above the surface, and hit the poppet head, making this the worst mining disaster in Australia's history. The newspaper of the day "the Canberra Times" can be read from the national archives. (Link Below) 📌 http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/2424471 📌 This second disaster, in which Thirteen miners were killed from the explosion, resulted in a successful national campaign to improve conditions for all Australian miners. So at least some good came from the sad deaths of these miners. May they rest in piece. The Dalyston township today, is nothing more than a few assorted stones and cement slabs laying around, and allotment numbers found on maps of the area. LOT 36 Bass Highway Dalyston VIC 3992

Coal Mines

43:44
The goal of coal mining is to obtain coal from the ground. Coal is valued for its energy content, and, since the 1880s, has been widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. In the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a colliery. In Australia, "colliery" generally refers to an underground coal mine. Coal mining has had many developments over the recent years, from the early days of men tunneling, digging and manually extracting the coal on carts to large open cut and long wall mines. Mining at this scale requires the use of draglines, trucks, conveyors, jacks and shearers. - H&T

Kalgoorlie underground mine tour

17:06
Patrick (Paddy) Hannan discovered gold in the area that was to become Kalgoorlie in 1893, soon after this (6 months), the first mine was started. Now located as part of the Mining Hall of Fame complex, just to the north of Kalgoorlie, this is a tour of a very small section of that mine, now open to tourists to gain an insight into the mining practices in the late 1800's. A hard life it must have been, chasing the gold in the seams of quartz which were to be found running deep into the earth. Kalgoorlie, one of the larger mines on earth, 'streets paved with gold', a truism, the worthless mullock from the mine was once used as road base for the streets of the town. This was later found to be high grade Telluride, a sulphide of gold. Soon the streets were dug up and returned to the mine for processing. Such yarns abound it this modern outback town which in many ways still retains a frontier feel to this day.

Gold 'mother lode' worth $15 million unearthed in Western Australia

02:14
Underground miners in outback Western Australia have unearthed rare gold specimens which geologists are calling a "once-in-a-lifetime discovery". Workers at the Beta Hunt mine near the small town of Kambalda, 630 kilometres east of Perth, have brought more than $15 million worth of gold specimens to the surface in just four days. The gold-encrusted rocks were found about 500 metres below the surface in an area just three metres wide and three metres high. Underground Training Systems - Introduction to Underground Mining

02:59
Underground Training Systems (UTS) has been set up to offer courses in hardrock underground mining (Gold, Nickel, Copper, Diamonds and many other base metals, excluding coal). Each course has been developed using our company Core Values and Positive Tips for Safety in a Hazardous Workplace . All courses are presented by a consultant that has a W.A shift boss ticket and more than 15 years practical underground mining experience. This gives the course participants a unique opportunity to ask questions and receive experienced answers about all different aspects of mining life. The jobs are Australia wide and there are roughly 23,000 hard rock miners within the Australian industry. The W.A. the Mines Department has estimated that between 10%-15% of these workers leave the industry every year. That works out to be 2300 to 3450 people that leave the industry every year (for a number of reasons) that need to be replaced. These entry level positions are filled with new starters that are commonly referred to as Green . This is where UTS Introduction to Underground Mining course has given employers the opportunity to employ people that have the knowledge of how an underground mine works and the entry level skills that they will be required to be performed. This allows a UTS graduate to become a useful member of an underground crew in 4-7 days of being on site. Entry level jobs covered include dump truck operator, nipper, drillers offsider and service crew member . By completing Introduction to Underground Mining over three days you will have the knowledge for us to present your resume to the relevant mining companies for entry level positions as part of our Placement Program . This program has been designed to give you the best possible chance to "get your foot in the door" and helpful staff who will start the employment process once you enrol.

Bolting and Meshing an underground mine heading.

03:39
This is where the jumbo operator has finished scaling the heading to remove most of the loose rocks. He then manipulates sheets of mesh, 2.4m wide and up to 5m long, into position with the jumbo's boom(s). He then drills holes and 'bolts' (pins) the mesh onto the rock surface with a variety of 'rock bolts', measuring from 900mm long, to 3000mm long (generally about 47mm thick). My job is to train him how to do this, especially when using different and new bolts, that he might not be familiar with. This guy is an artist. No names, as we are not discussing which mine it is. I wrote him a nice report for his boss!

Caterpillar started a mental health first aid program in 2011, which has grown from a team of 16 in the first year to about 30 people in 2013. Mental health first aiders comprise a mix of workers across the company – from forklift operators to facility managers. Each has undergone a two-day mental health training session to help them identify signs of poor mental health or stress, approach colleagues who may be struggling, provide advice on available support and follow up as needed. Thank you to Fay Jackson who facilitated the Mental Health First Aid training at Caterpillar Mining.

Working Down the Mines

02:32
Pics I have scanned from my photos which have turned out quite well I thought. From when I worked underground 1968 - 1981. The first part is Windarra nickel mine, 212 miles north of Kalgoorlie Western Australia. This was a trackless decline with some pretty big gear, 35 ton Wigmore Caterpillar trucks which were a modified 631 scraper with a tipping body, and 3-boom Gardner Denver pneumatic jumbos. They had open stopes with longholes drilled with GD Airtracs and some bar-and-arm machines. From memory I think one of the big stope blasts was 100,000 tons. The mine closed in the early '80s and was gutted. There were a few deaths down there, all rockfalls, all on my shift, so R.I.P. to those guys. The second part is Lake View & Star gold mine, on Kalgoorlie-Boulder's Golden Mile. I worked there as a machine miner on airlegs doing shrink stoping and intermediate driving (drifting). We worked by ourselves with no partner which was the practise then. We used Holman's Silver 3s and Silver 900 airleg machines (jacklegs). Mucking out inter drives we used air or electric 2-drum scrapers into a raise. We used AN60 dynamite primers with ANFO and electric detonators or sometimes safety fuse. This was a "traditional" mine with rail drives leading to a vertical shaft about 3000' deep from memory. The mines on the Golden Mile no longer exist because they have been swallowed up by the Super Pit.
