Global distillation explains why relatively high concentrations of POPs have been found in the Arctic environment and in the bodies of animals and people who live there, even though most of the chemicals have not been used in the region in appreciable amounts. The global distillation process can be understood using the same principles that explain distillations used to make liquor or purify chemicals in a laboratory. In these processes, a substance is vapourised at a relatively high temperature, and then the vapour travels to an area of lower temperature where it condenses. A similar phenomenon occurs on a global scale for certain chemicals. When these chemicals are released into the environment, some evaporates when ambient temperatures are warm, blows around on winds until temperatures are cooler, and then condensation occurs. Drops in temperature large enough to result in deposition can occur when chemicals are blown from warmer to cooler climates, or when seasons change. The net effect is atmospheric transport from low to high latitude and altitude. Since global distillation is a relatively slow process that relies on successive evaporation/condensation cycles, it is only effective for semi-volatile chemicals that break down very slowly in the environment, like DDT, polychlorinated biphenyls, and lindane. Several studies have measured the effect, usually by correlating the concentrations of a certain chemical in air, water, or biological specimens from various parts of the world with the latitude from which the samples were collected. For example, the levels of PCBs, hexachlorobenzene, and lindane measured in water, lichens, and tree bark have been shown to be greater in higher latitudes. The effect is also used to explain why certain pesticides are found in Arctic and high altitude samples even though there is no agricultural activity in these areas, and why indigenous peoples of the Arctic have some of the highest body burdens of certain POPs ever measured. New studies, however, revealed that the relatively high levels in cold regions are determined by slower degradation compared to warm regions.

Erika Tan explains the concepts of biological magnification and global warming. *** If there are any pictures used in this video, they are NOT MINE and I will not take credit for them. *** TRANSCRIPT: Today I’m going to go over global warming very briefly and also the idea of biological magnification. So what biological magnification is is the idea that organisms at higher levels at the food chain, or trophic levels, have greater concentrations of toxins in their bodies when compared to those at the bottom of the hierarchy. So in this picture we see a bunch of different organisms at different trophic levels, and the impact that PCBs, which are man-made organic chemicals, and the pesticide DDT has had on them. So at the lowest level, phytoplankton, we’ll say that there’s a concentration .025 parts per million of chemicals. But this exponentially increases as we climb higher through the hierarchy: .1 at zooplankton, 1.04 at smelt, 4.8 at trout, and finally, 124 at the herring gull! This is because as organisms get eaten by other organisms, the toxins accumulate and become more concentrated. PCBs were banned and DDT was actually banned because it was found that DDT interferes with the deposition of calcium in eggshells, and this problem caused a lot of the eggs to break open and the bird population to decline. Finally we’re going to talk about global warming, even though it’s a simple subject. As more greenhouse gases accumulate in the atmosphere, they trap more heat inside the Earth. This can lead to habitat loss, extreme weather, and other detrimental effects. You won’t need to memorize the effects that global warming will have for the AP exam, but you will need to practice predicting the effects that one area in the ecosystem will have on another. Presented by Rainer Lohmann - Professor of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography - at the 2018 Emerging Contaminants in the Aquatic Environment Conference. Some of the most notorious organic contaminants are persistent, bioaccumulative and hydrophobic, including PCBs and organochlorine pesticides, such as DDT. Yet many emerging contaminants in water possess very different physico-chemical properties and pathways. Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances in particular are at least as persistent as PCBs, also bioaccumulate but are much more soluble in water. Both are of concern to humans near contaminated sites, but also pose risks in the remote Arctic environment. By relying on passive sampling, we have been studying the transport, fate and traced the bioaccumulation of persistent contaminants at scales ranging from the heavily contaminated Passaic River (NJ) to the remote Arctic region. In the Passaic River, food-web dynamics of legacy contaminants were strongly influences by contaminants residing in sediment and porewater. By and large, these legacy pollutants scale with population density. The perflourinated compounds, in contrast, have distinct point sources that are not (yet) scaling with population, implying that abatement and remediation are distinct options.

Space Solar Power station, such as SPS Alpha, could overcome some issues that renewable energy plants on Earth suffer of structural basis when challenges such as energy transfer from orbit to Earth are solved. But will this solve the Earth's problems in a peaceful way? The increasing demand on energy seems to be one of the greatest challenges for modern society. [1,2] Power generation approaches of the 20th century, such as coal, oil, or nuclear plants come with certain issues limiting the scalability and/or questioning even the approach itself since they may harm nature and environment on a longterm time scale. Renewable energy generated e.g. with solar cells, wind mills, or tidal stations are on the rise but they usually depend to certain locations, weather, storage capabilities, and in some cases even on political climates. [3] Space based Solar Power generation [4,5] overcomes some of these issues: solar cells in orbit are independent of atmospheric influences and weather (e.g. clouds), solar harvesting satellites can be placed in orbit so they always face sun and generate power continuously, and there is enough space to scale the plants in order to serve the power demands. Solar power is an infinite power source (at least in the time scale for humanity) The bottle neck with this approach, however, is the transfer of the power from orbit to Earth. But if solved, this technology can supply power to locations on Earth, that are remotely located, that lack other power generation capabilities (e.g. due to a natural catastrophe), or that come with varying demands on power consumption. Some questions still remain: Is it possible to transfer power wireless over such a long distance with a sufficient efficiency? [6-8] How would that influence life on Earth? Toxicity Issues: Government health agencies are concerned about boron toxicity. You might be concerned as well if you read the following, pertaining to sodium chloride or table salt (17): 'Acute oral toxicity (LD50 - the dose at which half of the tested animals die): 3,000 mg/kg [Rat]. Chronic Effects on Humans: Mutagenic for mammalian somatic cells. Slightly hazardous in case of skin contact, ingestion or inhalation. Lowest Published Lethal Oral Dose in Man: 1000 mg/kg. Causes adverse reproductive effects in humans (fetotoxicity, abortion) by intraplacental route, may increase risk of Toxemia of Pregnancy in susceptible women. May cause adverse reproductive effects and birth defects in animals, particularly rats and mice - fetotoxicity, abortion, musculoskeletal abnormalities, and maternal effects (on ovaries, fallopian tubes). May affect genetic material (mutagenic). Ingestion of large quantities can irritate the stomach with nausea and vomiting. May affect behavior (muscle spasicity/contraction, somnolence), sense organs, metabolism, and cardiovascular system. Continued exposure may produce dehydration, internal organ congestion, and coma.' Now compare the sodium chloride toxicity with the Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS for borax (18): 'Low acute oral toxicity; LD50 in rats 4,500 to 6,000 mg/kg of body weight. Reproductive/developmental toxicity: Animal feeding studies in rat, mouse and dog, at high doses, have demonstrated effects on fertility and testes. Studies with boric acid in the rat, mouse and rabbit, at high doses, demonstrate developmental effects on the fetus, including fetal weight loss and minor skeletal variations. The doses administered were many times in excess of those to which humans would normally be exposed. No evidence of carcinogenicity in mice. No mutagenic activity was observed in a battery of short-term mutagenicity assays. Human epidemiological studies show no increase in pulmonary disease in occupational populations with chronic exposures to borate dust and no effect on fertility.' Here you see that table salt is 50 to 100% more toxic than borax, it changes the genetic material and is mutagenic, while borax is harmless in this regard. Infants are most at risk from high borax ingestion. It has been estimated that 5 to 10 grams can cause severe vomiting, diarrhoea, shock and even death, but it also says that lethal doses are not well documented in the literature. The following toxicity data are from documents of the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease Control(19, 20). A review of 784 accidental human poisonings from 10 - 88 grams of boric acid reported no fatalities, with 88% of cases being asymptomatic, meaning they did not notice anything. However, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, hepatic, renal, and central nervous system effects, dermatitis, erythema, and death have occasionally been observed in some infants, children and adults exposed to more than 84 mg boron/kg, corresponding to more than 40 grams of borax for 60 kg of body weight. Animal studies have identified reproductive toxicity as the most sensitive effects of boron ingestion. Exposure of rats, mice, and dogs for several weeks showed some damage to the testes and sperm at doses of more than 26 mg boron/kg which corresponds to 15 grams of borax/day for 60 kg body weight. Most at risk is the developing foetus, and in the studied animals rats were most affected. In one study slight reductions in the foetal body weight were already found at 13.7 mg boron/kg/day used during pregnancy. The no effect dose during pregnancy was set at less than 13.7 mg/kg/day corresponding to about 7 grams of borax per day for 60 kg body weight. With an added safety factor a no effect value of 9.6 mg boron/kg/day was calculated corresponding to 5 grams of borax for 60 kg. However, a rat study lasting for 3 generations found no reproductive toxicity or effect on the parents or offspring at 30 mg boron/kg/day. This dose corresponds to 17 grams of borax for 60 kg ingested for 3 generations! In another 3-generation study no problem was found at 17.5 mg boron/kg/day, corresponding to 9 grams of borax/60 kg, while the next higher tested borax dose of 58.5 mg/kg/day, corresponding to 30 grams of borax/60 kg, resulted in infertility. Therefore we can assume that the safe reproductive dose is about 20 grams/60 kg/day. Human studies of the possible association between impaired fertility and high boron levels in water, soil and dust in a Turkish populations, and boron mining and processing workers, found no effect. Leather is a fantastic material who's use has been pervasive through most of human history. But it's production is a scourge on the environment due to both the methods used to tan it, and the source of the starting material. In this video we explore a method for making a leather like material, without harming the environment, and without having to harm any animals. The starting material is a waste product from a drink that is becoming increasingly popular: Kombucha. As kombucha cultures grow, a layer of cellulose and proteins grow on the surface of the liquid. With a bit of simple processing, this layer can be transformed into an incredibly strong and flexible material that looks and feels like real leather. This research was made possible by Scihouse and this is far from the last you'll be seeing on this topic. Water pollution is a major global problem which requires ongoing evaluation and revision of water resource policy at all levels (international down to individual aquifers and wells). It has been suggested that water pollution is the leading worldwide cause of deaths and diseases,[1][2] and that it accounts for the deaths of more than 14,000 people daily.[2] An estimated 580 people in India die of water pollution related illness every day.[3] Around 90% the water in the cities of China is polluted,[4] and as of 2007, half a billion Chinese had no access to safe drinking water.[5] In addition to the acute problems of water pollution in developing countries, developed countries also continue to struggle with pollution problems.
