In telecommunication and signal processing companding (occasionally called compansion) is a method of mitigating the detrimental effects of a channel with limited dynamic range. The name is a combination of the words compressing and expanding. The use of companding allows signals with a large dynamic range to be transmitted over facilities that have a smaller dynamic range capability. Companding is employed in telephony and other audio applications such as professional wireless microphones and analog recording. While the dynamic range compression used in audio recording and the like depends on a variable-gain amplifier, and so is a locally linear process (linear for short regions, but not globally), companding is non-linear and takes place in the same way at all points in time. The dynamic range of a signal is compressed before transmission and is expanded to the original value at the receiver. The electronic circuit that does this is called a compander and works by compressing or expanding the dynamic range of an analog electronic signal such as sound recorded by a microphone. One variety is a triplet of amplifiers: a logarithmic amplifier, followed by a variable-gain linear amplifier and an exponential amplifier. Such a triplet has the property that its output voltage is proportional to the input voltage raised to an adjustable power. Companded quantization is the combination of three functional building blocks – namely, a (continuous-domain) signal dynamic range compressor, a limited-range uniform quantizer, and a (continuous-domain) signal dynamic range expander that inverts the compressor function. This type of quantization is frequently used in telephony systems. In practice, companders are designed to operate according to relatively simple dynamic range compressor functions that are designed to be suitable for implementation using simple analog electronic circuits. The two most popular compander functions used for telecommunications are the A-law and µ-law functions. Companding is used in digital telephony systems, compressing before input to an analog-to-digital converter, and then expanding after a digital-to-analog converter. This is equivalent to using a non-linear ADC as in a T-carrier telephone system that implements A-law or µ-law companding. This method is also used in digital file formats for better signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at lower bit rates. For example, a linearly encoded 16-bit PCM signal can be converted to an 8-bit WAV or AU file while maintaining a decent SNR by compressing before the transition to 8-bit and expanding after a conversion back to 16-bit. This is effectively a form of lossy audio data compression. Professional wireless microphones do this since the dynamic range of the microphone audio signal itself is larger than the dynamic range provided by radio transmission. Companding also reduces the noise and crosstalk levels at the receiver. Companders are used in concert audio systems and in some noise reduction schemes such as dbx and Dolby NR (all versions).

Recorded: 01/18/2012 CERIAS Security Seminar at Purdue University Secure Provenance Transmission for Data Streams Salmin Sultana, Purdue University Many application domains, such as real-time financial analysis, e-healthcare systems, sensor networks, are characterizedby continuous data streaming from multiple sources and through intermediate processing by multiple aggregators. Keeping track ofdata provenance in such highly dynamic context is an important requirement, since data provenance is a key factor in assessingdata trustworthiness which is crucial for many applications. Provenance management for streaming data requires addressing severalchallenges, including the assurance of high processing throughput, low bandwidth consumption, storage efficiency and secure transmission. In this talk, I will discuss a novel approach to securely transmit provenance for streaming data (focusing on sensor network) by embedding provenance into the inter-packet timing domain while addressing the above mentioned issues. As provenance is hidden in another host-medium, our solution can be conceptualized as watermarking technique. However, unlike traditional watermarking approaches, we embed provenance over the inter-packet delays rather than in the sensor data themselves, hence avoiding the problem of data degradation due to watermarking. Provenance is extracted by the data receiver utilizing an optimal threshold-based mechanism which minimizes the probability of provenance decoding errors. The resiliency of the scheme against outside and inside attackers is established through an extensive security analysis. Experiments show that our technique can recover provenance upto a certain level against perturbations to inter-packet timing characteristics. Salmin Sultana is pursuing her PhD in Computer Engineering in the School of ECE at Purdue University. Her research interests include secure data provenance, security and fault tolerance of distributed systems, such as cloud computing, power grid, and high performance computing. The satellite also carried two wide-band video tape recorders (WBVTR) capable of storing up to 30 minutes of scanner or camera data, giving the spacecraft's sensors a near-global coverage capability. An advanced attitude control system consisting of horizon scanners, sun sensors, and a command antenna combined with a freon gas propulsion system permitted the spacecraft's orientation to be maintained within plus or minus 0.7 degrees in all three axes. Spacecraft communications included a command subsystem operating at 154.2 and 2106.4 MHz and a PCM narrow-band telemetry subsystem, operating at 2287.5 and 137.86 MHz, for spacecraft housekeeping, attitude, and sensor performance data. Video data from the three-camera RBV system was transmitted in both real-time and tape recorder modes at 2265.5 MHz, while information from the MSS was constrained to a 20 MHz radio-frequency bandwidth at 2229.5 MHz. In 1976, Landsat 1 discovered a tiny uninhabited island 20 kilometers off the eastern coast of Canada. This island was thereafter designated Landsat Island after the satellite. As of 2006, it is the only island to be discovered via satellite imagery. Hughes Santa Barbara Research Center initiated design and fabrication of the first three MSS Multispectral Scanners... The first prototype MSS was completed within nine months by fall of 1970 when it was tested by scanning Half Dome at Yosemite National Park. ...In 1979, Presidential Directive 54 under President of the United States Jimmy Carter transferred Landsat operations from NASA to NOAA... and recommended transition to private sector operation of Landsat. I completed Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters (the open source version) without ever talking to the Earth starbase commander, Hayes, or without orbiting the starbase. WARNING: THIS VIDEO SERIES INCLUDES UNDONE SEGMENTS. IT IS LONG AND IRRELEVANT. PROVIDED FOR CURIOSITY ONLY. Note: There are occasional video / audio glitches in the videos, but those will [hopefully] get less and less common as the game progresses, as I fixed bugs in my recording software. Unfortunately, their effect tends to cascade the longer the video is. This is a practice / proof-of-concept run, created within a span of 7 days. Technical information: Played in real time on Linux computer across SSH link on Cygwin desktop. Recording was done using a homebrew LD_PRELOAD library that hooked into SDL video & audio updates, and produced 32-bit zmbv+pcm mkv files. Extra calls were added to notify the recording library of save & load events, so that the finished video could be constructed from the relevant segments. Undone segments are not shown (except in the "totally uncut" series). This video includes ALL the segments, even those that ended up in failure and had to be redone by loading a save. FAQ: Q) How does no-starbase (i.e. BGD, beating-game-differently) differ from normal game? A) Obvious differences: No flagship upgrades / module building, no crew recruiting, no fuel-for-RU, no building of ships, no Arilou ships, no replacing of planet landers, no escaping of battles. RU is worthless. Non-obvious differences: 100% of chance of probe spawning every day in hyperspace, versus maximum of 8% in normal game. When the Chmmr refit your ship, they no longer reset your fuel to 10, nor do they take away all of your modules, nor do they rob the ability to build new storage-bays (if you suddenly decide to help the starbase. You get to keep your minerals, too. Bring a megaton of exotic materials to the Sa-Matra explosion! They still remove your landers and max out your thrusters and turning jets. Also, they transport you to Earth orbit rather than aboard Starbase. Q) How does UQM differ from the PC Star Control II in terms of gameplay in BGD challenge? A) When you emerge in hyperspace (from battle, from truespace), in the PC version you would always emerge with the ship pointing north. It means that if you wanted to go anywhere else but north, you would have to slowly crank the ship to rotate towards the desired direction. In the open source version, the ship is automatically quick-oriented towards the original direction, which is a huge boon in a challenge like this. The planet lander only holds 50 units of BIO data rather than 64, necessitating more landings. It also turns slower, 45 RPM rather than 75 RPM. And the BIO is more aggressive. Q) Why was BGD not possible to do in the Star Control II, and in UQM before version 0.4.0? A) I have not tried it, but I can think: When the Chmmr take you back to Earth Starbase, you will get all the flashing hazard lights disco, and the commander will ask you to give radioactives. Unfortunately, the Chmmr removed all your storage bays, so you can't have radioactives onboard, making his request impossible to satisfy. Nor do you have a planet lander, though you could ask for one. But you should still be able to exit the conversation, and embark to Sa-Matra... With your 10 units of reserve fuel (since you don't have any fuel tanks anymore either). I have heard that the game crashes, but I can't see why it would.
