This video shows how water is diverted to a new channel created on purpose to dry part of the natural channel to start gravel mining in the Upper River Cinca. In-channel gravel mining is permitted in this case because river is damaging some local infrastructures (rip-rap) near a camping site. Changes on sediment transport, bed morphology and macroinvertebrate drift associated to mining are being assessed at multiple temporal and spatial scales.

Located near the southern tip of Napa Valley, Napa is the principal city of the Napa County Statistical Area with just over 80,000 residents. The City of Napa once the home to a lone saloon, the first recorded business within its current boundaries of almost 18 square miles, is today a thriving commercial mecca. On land that was once the home to an indigenous people as well as a varied wildlife, the Napa of today is a pleasant mix of historic and modern. It is home to dozens of 5-star restaurants, cafes, ethnic eateries, coffee shops as well as two prestigious Michelin stars dining experiences at La Toque and Kenzo Napa. Nathan Coombs is credited with founding the city on the land that now comprises the city limits of Napa. The name Napa is thought to have been derived from the name given to a Southern Nappan Indian Village. The meaning of Nappan is understood to be “Fairy Valley”. The thriving commerce of the early City of Napa also allowed culture to take hold. The Lyceum movement found the continuously growing city of Napa ripe for an agricultural society as well as a reading room. Two Newspapers began regular publication, the Napa County Reporter, and the Napa Valley Register that is still published today. A lot of California cities were born and flourished during the Gold Rush, for Napa it was the failures of the Gold Rush that fed its growth. Fleeing the severe winters of the gold fields, miners escaped to the more welcoming climate of Napa, where they found respite from cold, snow, sickness and floods. Burying their dreams of gold wealth, the miners found plenty of work throughout the Valley with a flourishing lumber industry that was taking root. Lumbering led to lots of cleared land for the establishment of cattle ranches which were also able to provide jobs. In 1858, Napa was home to a mining rush. It was the quicksilver rush, an industry that would maintain for decades. Tanning became a major economic engine because of the cattle ranches. In 1869 the B.F. Sawyer Tanning Company was established. As the city expanded so too to the interests and needs of its citizens. On February 13, 1880 the Napa Valley Opera House opened, it continues to operate today. The city of Napa has survived a tumultuous history spurred by the ever-changing times. It has endured 27 recorded floods from the river that runs downtown, it has remained firm during earthquakes, unbeaten during fires, and continued to reinvent itself during economic downturns. As the wine industry of Napa continues to seed the economic activity of the Valley, its fruits continue to provide a fruited harvest for the city. This prestigious renowned wine valley has maintained its resilience as it continues to rebuild after a 2015 earthquake and the wildfires of 2017. Treasury Wine Estates based in Australia, a multi-billion-dollar worldwide wine distributor maintains a footprint in the city of Napa. The economic renaissance of Napa is symbolized by the 10th Anniversary of Oxbow Public Market, a vision of a diverse group of investors led by a singular minded Steven Carlin who believed in the revitalization of the Oxbow District of Napa. Overcoming the doubts of business leaders, the pessimism of citizens, the national economic downturn of 2008, the Oxbow Public Market is a smashing success. The Oxbow Public Market was the brain child of Steve Carlin, a real estate developer and specialty food consultant who has an affinity for the concept of Buy Fresh, Buy Local. Judging by the estimated 1.8 – 2 million visitors a year that buy at the Oxbow Public Market, it is a success in its planning, its utilization and its revitalizing impetus to a Napa District that sorely needed a shot in the arm. The 40,000 square foot marketplace is the home to 22 merchants who entice visitors with artisan cafes. local food vendors, organic produce from local farms, wine, food, books, chocolates, breads, cakes as well as a selection that is found in most cities that are four times the size of Napa. The Oxbow Public Market boasts a relaxing deck area which overlooks the river that runs through the Oxbow District. When visiting the city of Napa, there is the Historic Downtown, Cowboy History, the History of Indigenous peoples, Miners History, some Riverboat lore, and a touch of train whistle stop memories, Agriculture History, Wine Making History and now as it celebrates its 10th Anniversary, the living History of the Oxbow Public Market.

A wide network of rivers, streams and oxbow lakes gives way to an industrial landscape with factories and other manufacturing operations in Thailand. Aerial footage of Thailand's fast-changing landscape, with a river passing through an increasingly urbanized landscape that was originally almost entirely used for agricultural purposes. Canals can be seen leading away from the river and local highways cross the waterways. Industrial developments seem to dominate the landscape as one gets closer to the city. The Oxbow Conservation Area, located on the Middle Fork John Day River, exhibits critical habitat for Chinook salmon, steelhead and bull trout. Dredge mining severely channelized the riverbed in the 1940s leading to a straightened channel and disconnected floodplain. The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs teamed up with the Bureau of Reclamation and a variety of other partners to restore two miles of river channel affected by mining. Watch the accomplishments made in 2014 on the third of five phases of restoration to the site.

Arch Coal just declared bankruptcy. So what does this mean for their plans to open the giant Otter Creek coal mine in Montana? The Otter Creek Valley is located in Southeastern Montana. On Jan. 11, 2016, Arch Coal filed for bankruptcy, raising serious doubts about its ability to continue new projects like Otter Creek. Communities have been coming together to fight this coal proposal every step of the way. It is time the Montana state government put a stop to this project once and for all. Water from the Miocene ditch, originally constructed for the Cherokee and Spring Valley Hydraulic Mining Companies in the 1870's, delivers water through a penstock to spin several generators to create electricity. The power plant can be accessed from the Lake Oroville Nelson Bar Boat Ramp parking lot. The water is held in Kunkle reservoir and then enters a riveted steel pipe approximately 30" in diameter and then into the penstock above the power house. The water is then discharged into an open ditch again to keep traveling south. I am not sure if the power house was original to the hydraulic mining operations which did have electricity for 24 hour operations using arc lamps. A historic inverted siphon that carried water from Concow reservoir over the north fork of the Feather River also fed Kunkle reservoir water.

I show you our abundance of hotels, mexican food places and lots of closed businesses lol. But we do have the crown jewel of this city is the colorado river. Here is some history about this city... from Wikipedia Blythe is a city in Riverside County, California, United States, in the Palo Verde Valley of the Lower Colorado River Valley region, an agricultural area and part of the Colorado Desert along the Colorado River. Blythe was named after Thomas H. Blythe, a San Francisco financier, who established primary water rights to the Colorado River in the region in 1877. The city was incorporated on July 21, 1916. The population was 20,817 at the 2010 census. In the early or mid-1870s, William Calloway (known as Oliver Calloway in some sources), an engineer and a former captain of the 1st California Infantry Regiment, explored an area across the Colorado River from Ehrenberg, Arizona and found its potential for development. Calloway made preliminary surveys and filed land claims under the Swamp Land Act of 1850. He interested the wealthier Thomas Henry Blythe (real last name Williams), who was born in Mold, Wales, to undertake development and settlement of an "empire" located next to the Colorado. On July 17, 1877, Blythe filed his first claim for Colorado River water on what was to become the "Blythe Intake" Blythe appointed another man named George Irish as manager to assist Calloway in building an irrigation system. Calloway died in a Chemehuevi attack in March 28, 1880, and was replaced by C.C. Miller, the father of Frank Augustus Miller. Thomas Blythe died on April 4, 1883; his only revisit to the valley was in November 1882. After his death, the work in the valley halted and Blythe's estate subsequently went into litigation between his illegitimate daughter Florence and other claimants. The California Supreme Court up to 1895, and the U.S. Supreme Court towards the 1900s, ruled that Florence was the holder of the estate, after several years of preceding rulings in favor of her and appeals against her in these courts. Frank Murphy and Ed Williams, who were involved on the cattle industry in southeastern Arizona, came to the area in 1904 and were convinced it was well-suited for cattle and farming. With the Hobson brothers from Ventura County, California, they bought Blythe's estate and formed the Palo Verde Land and Water Company. During 1911-12, W.F. Holt, who helped develop nearby Imperial Valley, was the company's general manager. On August 8, 1916, the California Southern Railroad reached Blythe from the desert station of Rice, California, then known as Blythe Junction. It was later renamed to honor G.W. Rice, an engineer and superintendent of the railroad. The dramatic growth in the valley following this event attracted national attention. Production totals increased annually from virtually nothing to near $8,000,000 in few years, primarily from cotton and cotton seed shipped to the ports. The lower cotton prices in 1920 ended this prosperous time. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway began leasing the line in 1921 and acquired it in the end of 1942. The first automobile bridge over the Colorado River between Blythe and Ehrenberg was constructed in 1928 to replace a cable ferry service. The bridge's successor was built in the early 1960s and it was expanded to four lanes and a pedestrian walkway in early 1974. In 1972, Interstate 10 was built through the city, replacing US 60 and the previously decommissioned US 70 in Hobsonway as the main thoroughfare. Their is no room for error on this road if another vehicle were to leave its lane it could mean plunging over the cliff for hundreds of feet. You can only imagine how difficult it was for mule trains to reach the town of Last Chance. At one point we had driven over an area where a portion of the road had washed out. This road resembles something that you would encounter in South America!

The deposit occurs in an ancient meander (oxbow), which is now a valley margin swamp, on the flood plain of the Okanagan River where it has eroded into a glacial terrace. Uraniferous groundwaters are infiltrating from side drainages into the porous terrace and uranium deposits occur where the uranium is adsorbed and probably reduced, in this case, in some peaty layers. The deposit contains about 30 t of U308 Triuranium octoxide (U3O8) is a compound of uranium. It is present as an olive green to black, odorless solid. It is one of the more popular forms of yellowcake and is shipped between mills and refineries in this form. Triuranium octoxide occurs naturally as the olive-green-colored mineral pitchblende. U3O8 is readily produced from UF6 and has potential long-term stability in a geologic environment. In the presence of oxygen (O2), uranium dioxide (UO2) is oxidized to U3O8, whereas uranium trioxide (UO3) loses oxygen at temperatures above 500 °C and is reduced to U3O8. The compound can be produced by any one of three primary chemical conversion processes, involving either uranium tetrafluoride (UF4) or uranyl fluoride (UO2F2) as intermediates, under normal environmental conditions, U3O8 is one of the most kinetically and thermodynamically stable forms of uranium and also because it is the form of uranium found in nature. My father (Ray Rasmussen) and I (Norm) took a drive down the Middle Fork of the John Day River on August 13, 1999. My father was age 95 at the time, and I was 52. This clip ends at Galena, about 10 miles below Bates. At Galena, is the footage of the house Cody, Marnie, Terry and Marnie Jo McConnell used to live, which was a stage coach stop at one time in the gold mining days. They moved down to Galena because Cody couldn't work due to severe lower back problems from a log falling accident when he worked in the woods for Edward Hines Lumber Company at Bates. At Galena, Marnie drove school bus, bussing kids from around that area to Bates in the morning and then driving them back home in the evenings. Terry McConnel was my age, and some of my fondest memories was when I would stay with him there at the old Stage Coach stop in Galena. We caught fish in the Middle Fork behind his house; we would take his dad's Willies jeep and explore all over the country, always looking for a coyote to shoot at. Terry had a dog that had incredible eyesight, and could spot a coyote 3/4's of a mile away. He would look up over the cab of the jeep, and would bark when he spotted a coyote. Sometimes we would have a hard time seeing the coyote; it would be so far away. We saw a lot of deer and quite a few elk on those trips. The house with the sign reading "Old Hunter Crossing" was the new house Cody and Marnie had built later on in life. As of January 7, 2009, Marnie still lives there. Cody passed away some years back. Terry and Marnie Jo have also passed. Terry was the Mayor of Galena, the Sheriff, the Judge, the Tax Assessor, and the City Treasurer.
