Developing a skilled workforce at our Raglan Mine in Canada

02:14
Raglan Mine is a Glencore nickel operation in northern Canada. In 2008, Raglan Mine implemented the Tamatumani program intended to attract and retain the largest possible number of Inuit employees. Tamatumani aims to encourage more long-term employment, expand Inuit mining opportunities and foster better workplace integration. One of the Tamatumani initiatives is the “Stope School,” a program that trains Inuit employees in mining-related tasks. Over a two year period, trainees become apprentice miners and receive training in an underground environment. Once the program is completed, trainees become full miners. More than 25 Inuit trainees have graduated from the Stope School since 2008. So far, Tamatumani has placed Inuit workers in over 120 positions, covering more than 45 different types of jobs. The number of Inuit employees has risen from 55 in 1998 to 182 in June 2016, the highest number in Raglan Mine’s history. In June 2016, over 20% of our workforce at the Raglan Mine site was Inuit. ⚒ Canada's Largest Gold Mine: The Canadian Malartic Mine HD 2017

01:52
Sean Roosen from Osisko Mining (now Osisko Gold Royalties) was the only one brave enough to buy the historic Canadian Malartic Mine in October 2004 from a liquidation trustee following McWatters Mining’s bankruptcy. A year earlier, Barrick sold it to McWatters, without having done any work on the proerty since taking it over from Lac Minerals in 1994. Roosen gambled that no one would bid on what was perceived as a fully exploited brownfield play with potential liabilities. And he won the gamble of his lifetime, only paying $80,000 for the acquisition. At that time, Osisko was a junior exploration company with only 3 full-time employees and had a market capitalization of less than $5 million trading at 20 cents. Only 7 years following the acquisition and after 750,000 m of drilling, the filing of a positive feasibility study in December 2008, governmental approval in August 2009 and successful financing of the $1 billion project, the construction and start-up of the Canadian Malartic open-pit gold mine has been completed.... California’s ban on suction-dredge mining puts gold prospectors out of work

02:15
PLF's cert. petition in People v. Rinehart challenges California’s ban on suction dredge mining. Brandon Rinehart a prominent gold prospector in California shares his views on the suction dredge ban and PLF Attorney Damien Schiff reflects on its unconstitutionality. About Pacific Legal Foundation Pacific Legal Foundation is the oldest and most successful public interest legal organization that fights for limited government, property rights, individual rights and a balanced approach to environmental protection. PLF represents all clients free of charge. Website: http://www.pacificlegal.org/ Blog: http://blog.pacificlegal.org/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PacificLegalFoundation/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/PacificLegal ------ California is illegally frustrating federal law by prohibiting suction-dredge mining — which effectively bans prospectors from working their streambed claims on federal land in the Golden State. So argues an appeal to the Supreme Court of the United States just filed by Pacific Legal Foundation. Donor-supported PLF is the leading legal watchdog organization that litigates nationwide for limited government, property rights, and balanced environmental regulations. PLF filed the petition for certiorari on behalf of Brandon Rinehart, a part-time prospector from Antioch, California, who was criminally prosecuted by the state for using a suction dredge to work his claim in Plumas National Forest. PLF represents Rinehart without charge, as with all its clients. “California’s ban on suction-dredge mining frustrates federal policy and is preempted by federal law," said PLF attorney Jonathan Wood. "For nearly a century and a half, federal law has encouraged enterprising Americans to discover and mine for gold on federal land. Prospectors have a right to stake out mining claims on federal land, and they have a right to work their claims. And states have the authority to impose reasonable regulations on mining. But California lawmakers have acted like claim-jumpers, banning mining regardless of whether the particular mining has any impacts or can be mitigated, rather than regulating it. As our challenge argues, the state is acting unlawfully.”
Over 5000 Children Work in Gold Mines in Moroto

These are either in actual extraction or in services like selling food, water, and alcohol among others. The plight of these children is worsening as they struggle to survive. The environment that supports the mining activities is also threatened as the demand for minerals rises.

Gold Mining On The Yuba River

09:20
Gold Mining On The Yuba River The Ancient American River, Ancient Yuba River, Ancient Calaveras River, Ancient Mokelumne River, Ancient Tuolumne River, Ancient Magalia Channel, Ancient Intervolcanic Cateract Channel, Ancient Intervolcanic American River and the Ancient Jura River (from the Jurassic Period), are plotted in detail on Big Tens California Gold Map 5. The present-day rivers bearing the same names as their ancient rivers are also shown. The Ancient Rivers of Gold in northern California are from the Tertiary Period. The Tertiary rivers existed millions of years ago and many of them had large quantities of gold within their gravels. Because of that, they are known as the "Ancient Rivers of Gold." Each ancient river is discussed below. Information on this page is based on the classic work of Waldemar Lindgren of the United States Geological Survey and by study of Big Tens California Gold Map 5, which shows the relationship of the ancient rivers to landmarks, such as roads, creeks and towns in the region. These now-dry Tertiary rivers are thought to be a prime source of the gold found in many of the rivers and streams of the Mother Lode region of northern California. The ancient rivers are discontinuous and sometimes follow tortuous routes. They have been altered by volcanic activity, erosion, and in some instances portions of the rivers have been covered by lava. Much of the region underwent extreme volcanic eruptions. Volcanic flows have been found up to 4,000 feet deep. Volcanic flows were up to 60 miles in length. Portions of an ancient river may be found at ground level or near the top of a mountain, or on the side of a mountain, or buried. Early prospectors found portions of the ancient rivers and worked them for their rich gold content. Later, mining companies used hydraulic mining or drift mining techniques to recover the gold. In hydraulic mining, water under pressure is directed to, for example, the side of a ravine to dislodge the gravels and send the material to the sluices where the gold is recovered. The equipment that was used (called a "monitor" or "giant") was similar to a very large hose nozzle. Geologic reports speak of gravel deposits up to 250 feet deep with gold deposits interspersed at various levels within the gravels. Some of the gravels of the ancient rivers of gold have been cemented together over time. Smaller materials between the larger gravels have bound the larger gravels together. Drift mining is used in those instances to follow the channel underneath the volcanic covering. In drift mining, tunnels are driven in bedrock underneath the channels and when the channels are reached, the richest stratum, resting immediately on the bedrock, is extracted by underground mining methods and then washed at the mouth of the tunnel. Many miles of the ancient rivers are still un-worked and may be very rich in gold.

SPAIN: NORTHERN REGION OF ASTURIAS HIT BY GOLD FEVER

03:00
Spanish/Eng/Nat A peaceful mountainous region in northern Spain looks set to become - literally - a gold mine. Asturias has been hit by gold fever after a United States-based company began looking for gold in the area. But although the new industry promises to bring much-needed jobs to the region, some environmentalists and locals are unhappy about the gold exploration. This is the green and pleasant Asturias region in northern Spain. But this landscape could change dramatically if the United States-based Rio Narcea Gold Mines strike rich after investing 40 (m) million dollars looking for gold in the area. The company has already begun sinking holes in the search for the precious metal. But it wasn't the first to come looking for gold here. The Romans were lured to Asturias by gold fever long ago and gave the rugged region a tremendous boost when their yearly gold output reached about 6,700 kilogrammes (15- thousand pounds) a year. Today, weekend panhandlers maintain the tradition by searching for the precious metal in the region's many brooks and streams. But no one makes a living out of it, and Asturias - crippled by a declining coal and wood industry - badly needs a boost. The promise of new jobs in an area suffering 25 per cent unemployment prompted the central administration and local authorities to grant 1,100 square kilometres (680 square miles) of mineral rights to Rio Narcea. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "This gold mining will give jobs to many people around here, and as there is not much work, it will come in handy for people." SUPER CAPTION: Carlos Alba, gold drilling rigger Rio Narcea is spending one (m) million dollars on an independent feasibility study of its own optimistic predictions, estimated at 1.8 (m) million ounces of the precious ore. But for the environmentalists, the prospect of ruining this beautiful landscape to mine gold is not worth the cost to the countryside. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "In the past, the Romans already destroyed a lot to extract a wealth that is going to be taken away today by other empires, surely at the cost of those who live here." SUPER CAPTION: Carlos Lastra, biology professor, Oviedo University For 70 year-old Jose Manuel Llano, the damage may already have been done. After using a bucket abandoned by the drilling workers, he claims he was violently sick and contracted a lung ailment from which he still hasn't recovered. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "I threw the bucket away and went home feeling awful and coughing endlessly." SUPER CAPTION: Jose Manuel Llano, alleged poisoning victim Jose Manuel's daughter, Isabel, has no doubt Rio Narcea is responsible for her father's illness. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "The worker who was with my father was wearing a mask and my father asked him why and he said it was because of allergies. What really happened is that there was a toxic product in the bucket and that is why he had to wear a mask. My father was there and no one told him to go away and that he shouldn't be there because it was a toxic product. No one told him anything." SUPER CAPTION: Isabel Llano, daughter of alleged poisoning victim But Gene Spiering, the vice president of Rio Narcea, dismissed the allegation as a ploy to extort money from the company. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Most of what we use is potato starch, carbon bean and bentonite. You can make a stew out of it. It's ridiculous. And to talk about fumes or something coming out of those holes... there's nothing." SUPER CAPTION: Gene Spiering, Vice President of Rio Narcea SOUNDBITE: (English) SUPER CAPTION: Alberto Lavandeira, Operations Manager of Rio Narcea You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/5d8c6a8af60c99d2a7054b05414cf5f2 Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork

Stolen Childhood: How toddlers learn to mine gold

15:05
A few kilometres from Minna, Northern Nigeria, miles of dug-out craters scatter the landscape. These illegal mines, along with others across the country, are the livelihood of around five million poverty stricken people: families who, on a daily basis, have no choice but to put their lives on the line just to survive. Working long hours for little money, the backbreaking work these miners endure can lead to serious health risks. While some spend hours in tiny openings in the rock breathing in damp air, others stay in cold water for days on end, giving them a high chance of developing conditions like Silicosis, Pneumonia, Tuberculosis, and Lymphoma. Standing in the yard of his nearby house, Abdulahi Abdulahi, a former employee of the Nigerian prison service, is one of the many miners forced into this line of work. Ever since a jailbreak at the prison he worked for in Minna, Abdulahi has struggled to find steady employment. Conditions are so bad that, of his sixteen children, ten are full time miners. Deep lines stretch across his brow as he tells his children to grab their metal pans before a long day’s work. “Fasten up... Let’s go, let’s go,” he shouts, as the family bundle into the back of an auto-rickshaw—or keke napep—heading for the mine they work at only a few miles down the road. Leaving the vehicle, the family walk into a field where others are already at work. Abdulahi’s situation is typical among his fellow miners: a man forced to make his children work out of complete desperation. With his tearful eldest son, El Haji, standing nearby, the family know there are very few options for them. “When I was working,” Abdulahi says, “I didn’t allow them to engage in mining.” Toddlers as young as three years old work here, in the hope of raising enough money to help feed their family, with any left over used to pay for their school fees. While many hope to be educated one day, the majority will not earn enough to cover even the most basic schooling. Sifting through the water and rubble with his hands, Rabi’u, 12, is already an experienced miner. Although he’s spent much of his young life digging, most days he finds nothing at all. An average day for him is spent digging and washing tonnes of sand in the hope of finding a few specs of gold. If he finds any, buyers will either pay for it directly, or get the gold processed at industrial mining plants around the area. These large-scale sites, used to extract the gold from rocks using a variety of methods and algorithms, are where the decent money is made, one step removed from the source. After processing, the gold is then exported to the Middle East and Europe. “We seek a legal means of making money,” one plant worker says, wooden benches and bags of rubble surrounding him. “We make good money from the gold we dig,” he adds. The increase in illegal mining has sent shockwaves across the whole industry. Many certified miners haven’t been allowed to work, as a crack down from the Nigerian government on mining rages on across the country. Just recently, president Muhammadu Buhari set up a special security team to guard against illegal mining countrywide, though this has meant the closure of many legitimate mines. “The challenges that you face from informal, artisanal miners are in the fields where you’re operating in and already have licences for,” says John Olukayode Fayemi, the Minister of Solid Minerals. With more mines being closed than ever, licenced miners have less places work as a knock on effect. Hordes of mining graduates, meanwhile, certificates in hand, have also suffered, and are hopeful of a resolution soon. “These graduates don’t have jobs and it would be good if they are allowed to mine without interference,” one spokesman says. With mining conditions at a low across Nigeria, action needs to be taken quickly. As five women huddle around one mine, their colourful clothes increasingly muddied, they search through the murky water for any sign of gold. Their frantic pursuits can often lead to danger; the unstable earth they dig through can come crashing down at any moment, leading to death in many cases. “If we had money,” one of the women says, “we would not subject ourselves to this hardship.” At a neighbouring mine, three year old Abba has been learning the trade from his older siblings. Earning 100 Naira a day, the equivalent of just under 30 cents in the U.S., he’s trying to raise money to go to school, though he can’t yet understand English, the language the course will be taught in. As he plays around in the mud, with a smile plastered across his face, it’s clear he’s nothing more than a child being asked to grow up too soon.

Searching for a lost Gold mine part 2 of 2

22:58
The  Horseshoe and Horseshoe Annex – unreported and nearly forgotten gold mines on the East Fork of the San Gabriel River  By Hugh Blanchard         Several years ago while hiking to the Bridge that Goes Nowhere on the East Fork of the San Gabriel River a fellow hiker advised me of a mine located downstream from the Bridge. I made several unsuccessful efforts to locate it but only recently  was able to find it. For starters there was nothing I could find in print which mentioned the mine. John Robinson’s definitive  Mines of the East Fork does not mention it. The Forest Service told me they knew nothing about it. Oddly enough the only place I could find it named was in an internet sales article for the surrounding property  placed in 1998 on Tom Chester”s web site by the then owner Frank Saunders.  Google “Private Property For Sale by Bridge To Nowhere”. No sale developed as the Saunders family still owns the property according to the County Assessor’s Office. It was not until after I had found the mine was I able to find it mentioned in print in a magazine which ceased publication more than 65 years ago .Trails Magazine was a  well regarded but short-lived publication (1934-1939) devoted to hiking in LA County. Its Summer 1938 issue p.9 states”The famous old Horseshoe Mine has had many owners, and has periodically produced much gold…At the mouth of scenic Devil’s Canyon is the Saunders patented mine…Richard Saunders, son of the Old Timer who built the cabin, now owns it and mines there intermittently.” The mine was originally patented in 1909 by Frank Saunders grandfather, R. Cowper Saunders. Its name comes from the shape of the river where it is located. It is part of a 50 acre private enclave owned by the Saunders family which may or may not include the Bridge that Goes Nowhere. The Saunders family claims ownership of the Bridge. The Forest Service is not sure as surveys performed in the 1880”s were frequently inaccurate. As of this writing (October 2005) the Forest Service is considering employing a land surveyor to try to determine who actually owns the land under the Bridge.  Frank Saunders passed away in 2002.. After his passing his widow Gail moved from Santa Barbara to McKinney, Texas to live with her sister. Attempts to reach her went unanswered. Apparently she continues to license bungee operations at the Bridge run by Ron Jones, president of Bungee America, Inc. The reason the mine is rather difficult to find is because the hikers trail to the Bridge veers eastward several hundred yards away from the East Fork about a mile below the Bridge. Thus only those few hikers who continue going directly upstream would notice the mine. The key to finding it is to note a private enclave marker (now heavily vandalized) on the trail a quarter of a mile before the Bridge. The marker lists various restrictions on entering this area. Shortly after the marker a faint but noticeable trail leads down to the stream. Upon reaching the stream head downstream at least 600 feet to find the mine. One of our group feels it is more like a thousand feet. In any event the mine is on the left (east) bank and is quite noticeable.  On the October 2005 trip the writer and his companions located the Horseshoe Annex which is about 150 feet downstream from the same trail that leads to the Horseshoe. It is about 50 feet upslope on the right (west) side of the stream surrounded by a forest of fig trees with a large fig tree partially blocking and concealing the entrance. Although the Saunders Family first patented the Horseshoe and Horseshoe Annex another family, the Veuhoff's, did most of the subsequent digging in the Horseshoe Annex. Theodore Veuhoff who immigrated from Germany worked the Horseshoe Annex from about 1930 to the early 1950's often assisted by his two sons. He named the mine the "Elvira Veuhoff" for his daughter and also planted the large fig tree which now covers the entrance to the mine.  My deep appreciation to Ron Jones who first advised me of the mines and their location and to Stephen Veuhoff who informed me of the role his great grandfather played in the digging of the Horshoe Annex and planting the fig tree. Without their generous assistance this article could not have been written.    Thrunite Official Store: http://www.thrunite.com/ (Buy now here you will save 5% by using a coupon code: THRUNITE) Amazon US.: http://amazon.com/thrunite Amazon CA.:http://www.amazon.ca/shops/A1BNV2EQ2F... A Tour of the Hydraulic Pit Above the Gold Dredge | Gold Mining | Ep 4

07:07
A quick tour of the large hydraulic pit on our claim just obove the suction dredge. It was most likely from around the depression era when this was done and work stopped because of WWII and never got started back up until gold dredgers entered the scene in the 60's and 70's. Still not much gold from the dredge. The hard pack is nice, seemingly old and the boulders are plentiful, too plentiful to move fast with the mining.

Blackwater Gold Mining Claims - California - 2017

10:45
The Blackwater mines are part of the historic Blackwater prospects that were known for producing massive amounts of gold. The prospects were staked in 1984 and again in 1987. In 1988 the claims were leased to the Homestake Mining Company. Today the Blackwater mines consist of 2 shafts and 2 adits. The mine cuts are clean and stable, but the lowest shaft is mostly collapsed.

The Carlisle Extension Mineral Claim covers some of the more important workings right next to the patented Carlisle property. The extension claim includes a large shaft and foundations, along with multiple mine entrances, cuts, and prospects. This is an extremely historic mine and region that has produced thousands of tons of gold, silver, and copper. This would be a great operation for small miners with the resources to clear the shaft and work underground. This video contains footage of the patented Carlisle Property, which is separate from the Carlisle Extension Mineral Claim.
