Made by The National Film Board 1948. Directed by R Maslyn Williams. Much of the romance associated with the development of the gold industry is to be found at Kalgoorlie on the golden mile, that rich strip of Western Australian territory. This film illustrates life in the town and the work of the miners: the school of mining, the vast store of mining tradition, the old-time prospectors who still search the surrounding countryside for new and fabulous strikes. It takes the viewer underground, deep into the galleries where the gold holding rock is blasted out, and shows the intricate business of separating the valuable metal from the rock that is undertaken on the surface.

It's free! https://bit.ly/2F5Fuey Dirty Business: How Mining Made Australia is the history of Australian mining. It portrays how over the last 150 years mining has made Australia rich, yet created an unending struggle over who shares in the wealth. It reveals how mining helped forge democracy yet has repeatedly plotted to influence politics and even overthrow democratically elected leaders. Whilst mining has also been deeply damaging to Aboriginal society, ironically in the 21st century, it may be aboriginal people's best hope of economic self-determination.

Loading Iron Ore at Hamersley's Tom Price mine. WA.
I took this silent movie when I was working at Hamersley Iron's Tom Price iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of WA, in the late 1970's. The smaller haultrucks were Wabco120B and the larger ones were Wabco3200B, ( They carried well over 200 tons of iron ore at a time.) Both were relatively easy to drive once you had got used to their size. I think the quality of the movie is pretty good, considering it's age and the fact that it has been transferred from old Cine film---VHS---DVD---PC and finally to YouTube.

Working Down the Mines
Pics I have scanned from my photos which have turned out quite well I thought. From when I worked underground 1968 - 1981. The first part is Windarra nickel mine, 212 miles north of Kalgoorlie Western Australia. This was a trackless decline with some pretty big gear, 35 ton Wigmore Caterpillar trucks which were a modified 631 scraper with a tipping body, and 3-boom Gardner Denver pneumatic jumbos. They had open stopes with longholes drilled with GD Airtracs and some bar-and-arm machines. From memory I think one of the big stope blasts was 100,000 tons. The mine closed in the early '80s and was gutted. There were a few deaths down there, all rockfalls, all on my shift, so R.I.P. to those guys. The second part is Lake View & Star gold mine, on Kalgoorlie-Boulder's Golden Mile. I worked there as a machine miner on airlegs doing shrink stoping and intermediate driving (drifting). We worked by ourselves with no partner which was the practise then. We used Holman's Silver 3s and Silver 900 airleg machines (jacklegs). Mucking out inter drives we used air or electric 2-drum scrapers into a raise. We used AN60 dynamite primers with ANFO and electric detonators or sometimes safety fuse. This was a "traditional" mine with rail drives leading to a vertical shaft about 3000' deep from memory. The mines on the Golden Mile no longer exist because they have been swallowed up by the Super Pit.

Super Pit gold mine, ONE OF A SERIES ON KALGOORLIE SEE http://video.google.com.au/videosearch?q=DON+PUGH+KALGOORLIE From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Fimiston Open Pit, colloquially known as the Super Pit, ( 30°46′29″S, 121°30′34″E), is Australia's largest open cut gold mine. The Super Pit is located off the Goldfields Highway on the south-east edge of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Western Australia. Most of the gold mined in the Super Pit occurs within ore lodes formed by ancient shears in a rock unit called the Golden Mile Dolerite. As a result, the area is known as the Golden Mile even though the lodes occur in an area over 2 km in width and 1 km in depth. This renowned Kalgoorlie-Boulder land mark will eventually stretch 3.8 km long, 1.4 km wide and reach a depth over 500 m. Since 1893, when Irishman Paddy Hannan first made his famous discovery, more than 50 million ounces (1,550 t) of gold have been harvested from the Golden Mile. Originally consisting of a number of small underground mines, consolidation into a single open pit mine was attempted by Alan Bond, but he was unable to complete the takeover. The Super Pit was eventually created in 1989 by Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd, a joint venture between Normandy Australia and Homestake Gold of Australia Limited. As of 2005 Kalgoorlie Consolidate Gold Mines Pty Ltd is owned by the Australian subsidiaries of the Barrick Gold Corporation and Newmont Mining Corporation and produces up to 900,000 ounces (28 t) of gold every year. The Super Pit is open for viewing at the public lookout daily between 7 am and 9 pm. Blasts occur regularly and can often be viewed from this lookout located off the Goldfields Highway in Boulder. Free tours of the Super Pit run once a month on Boulder Market Days. The tours give a behind the scenes look at the mining operations and equipment. A highlight of the tour is the opportunity to view the pit from the OBR (Oroya Bypass Road) internal lookout. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Pit_gold_mine http://www1.superpit.com.au/pages/about_kcgm.asp DON PUGH PRODUCER: Don Pugh

It was founded by gold prospectors in 1888, and gazetted in 1890.[2] It is the major town and administrative centre of the Shire of Yilgarn.[3] At the 2006 census, Southern Cross had a population of 708.[1] The town of Southern Cross is one of the many towns which run along the Mundaring to Kalgoorlie Goldfields Water Supply Scheme engineered by C. Y. O'Connor.[4] A succession of gold rushes in the Yilgarn region near Southern Cross in 1887, at Coolgardie in 1892, and at Kalgoorlie in 1893 caused a population explosion in the barren and dry desert centre of Western Australia. It is named after the Southern Cross constellation,[2] and the town's most significant streets are named after stars. Southern Cross is on the standard gauge railway from Perth to Kalgoorlie and beyond. The Prospector and Indian Pacific passenger trains service the town. The former narrow gauge railway reached Southern Cross on 1 July, 1894.[5] DON PUGH CARAVAN TRIPP 2008

Kanowna nr Kalgoorlie, WA
Kanowna is a ghost town in the Goldfields region of Western Australia. It is located about 20 km east of Kalgoorlie. After the discovery of gold in the area in 1893, the townsite was gazetted in 1894.[1] and the population grew from 2,500 in 1897 to over 12,500 by 1899.[2] However, the alluvial gold supply was rapidly exhausted and underground mines following the outcropping vein produced decreasing amounts of gold, resulting in a slow but steady decrease in the population. The railway station was closed during the Great Depression, and by 1953 the town had been abandoned. The railway station platform, two cemeteries and mine workings are all that is left of the original town of Kanowna. Signs erected by the Kalgoorlie Historical society mark the sites of significant buildings. Increasing gold prices in the late 1970s sparked renewed interest in exploring the geology of the area for new sources of gold. The discovery of a large amount of gold, previously undiscovered because the vein did not reach the surface, made gold mining in the region economically viable again. Mining recommenced in 1986, initially as open-cut mining, before moving to underground mines. As of 2002, the Kanowna Belle mine employed over 300 people. Thomas Risely¹s account of the discovery gives an insight into the hardships which were to confront the settlers of the area. Myself, Toomey and Charlie Crossland, started out from our camp at Barcoyton. After prospecting the belt for some days our water gave out. Our blackboy whom I call Wheelbarrow, said he knew plenty of Gabby (water) at Koorkoordine. When we got to Koorkoordine we found one of Hunt¹s dry wells, just as dry as we were. We decided to start back through the night and return to our camp, distance about 40 miles, and we travelled by the Southern Cross - taken to stars to the north - thanks to Charlie Crossland¹s knowledge of the stars. Or our bones would be bleaching in the scrub now, as we were two days without water at this time. We had to remain at our camp until rains came, them myself and Mick Toomey set out again. We discovered gold four miles from Koorkoordine. I named the place Southern Cross.¹ There was a small goldrush but it was short-lived (this was an area of reef gold not alluvial gold) because on 17 September 1892 a young Queenslander, Arthur Wellesly Bayley, rode into Southern Cross with 554 oz of gold which he had discovered at Fly Flat (now Coolgardie). The discovery started the greatest gold rush in West Australian history. Overnight the miners who had flocked to the Southern Cross diggings moved to the more lucrative eastern fields. The town¹s growth was dramatic but it was never a boisterous centre like Coolgardie or Kalgoorlie. In 1891 the Eastern Goldfields first courthouse was built. By 1893 it had become a municipality. And in 1894 the railway arrived giving the town fast and reliable access to the coast. Today the area produces oats, barley, wheat, sheep and gold but the average annual rainfall of 279 mm means that the land is marginal. In recent times the fluctuating price of gold has seen renewed interest in the Southern Cross area with both Broken Hill Metals NL and Golden Valley Mines NL being the main operators in the region
