Kenya strikes oil again: 75 metres of oil discovered in Turkana

00:50
Kenya has struck oil again, the second fresh find in Turkana fields since the year began. This is set to lift the country's estimates of the black gold past a billion barrels from the current 750 million barrels of recoverable oil so far discovered. British explorer Tullow Oil says it has struck 75 metres of oil in two zones at the Emekuya-1 well in Block 13T of the Lokichar basin. The find comes four months after the exploration company discovered another 25 metres of oil at Erut-1 well in the same block in January. It also emboldens the country’s case in its plan to start small-scale oil exports next month to test the receptivity of its crude in the global market.

The Battle Raging In Nigeria Over Control Of Oil | VICE on HBO

14:38
Nigeria may sit atop one of the largest oil reserves in the world, but the majority of the Nigerian people have seen little benefit from the multibillion-dollar industry. The government and global energy companies have been exploiting the resource for years, bringing poverty, pollution, and violence to the Niger Delta. And now the local militias fighting for oil control have made conditions even worse. Caught in the conflict are Nigerian citizens involved in the illegal oil market simply for survival. Oil theft is rampant, and the booming black market has transnational oil and gas consultants concerned about the effects on global oil markets. The government isn't too happy about it either. “All the oil that is sold around here, the government calls illegally refined products,” local oil businessman Don Wizaro told VICE News. And when the Nigerian military raids illegal oil operations, they slash containers, releasing oil into waterways, contaminating what the main source of fishing, agriculture, and drinking water. As the government continues its assault on illegal refineries and barges carrying stolen oil, local militias are retaliating. And one of the most notorious militias is the Niger Delta Avengers. They attack pipelines and infrastructure, significantly affecting both the environment and the economy. VICE correspondent Gianna Toboni heads to the heart of Nigeria's oil production to witness firsthand the fight over the control of oil in the Niger Delta. Kenya's Journey to Oil Mining

02:29
Watch KTN Live http://www.ktnkenya.tv The discovery of oil in Kenya has received varied reactions from Kenyans from different quarters. Excitement over the economic prospects the discovery may bring is evident. In equal measure however, is fear that Kenya, like other sub Saharan countries that have struck oil, will be caught in a maze of corruption cases and a gaping difference between the rich and the poor. While all these reactions are valid, analysts have urged Kenyans to be patient with the project which may take between three to four years to take off. But now that there is oil, what next? KTN's Edith Kimani with the details.

Kenya sitting on a gold mine that is the mining sector, geological survey shows

Kenya is sitting on a gold mine and that is the mining sector. A geological survey by a London company reports that Kenya has presence of at least 20 minerals but only a few deposits have been quantified beyond gold, copper, coal and iron ore that have been named. Gemstones like tanzanite and ruby stones are some of them. Just what will it take to get the mining industry booming? Britain's Tullow Oil strikes second oil basin in Kenya

00:43
Britain's Tullow Oil has said it made an oil discovery in Kenya which could potentially open up a second oil basin for development in the country. Kenya and neighboring Uganda have both made oil finds that have yet to start commercial production. The discovery comes as low oil prices prompt international oil firms to reduce spending on exploration and development. Tullow is working with partners Africa Oil and A.P. Moller-Maersk to develop finds in northwest Kenya, where recoverable reserves have been put at an estimated 600 million barrels.

Oil discovered in Kenya

02:11
Oil has been discovered in Kenya after exploratory drilling by Anglo-Irish firm Tullow Oil, President Mwai Kibaki announced on Monday. The discovery was made over the weekend in the country's north-western Turkana region. President Kibaki said it was "the first time Kenya has made such a discovery" and called it a "major breakthrough". Kenya is a regional business and tourist hub with the largest economy in East Africa, although its relative wealth is not based on mineral riches. Kibaki said Tullow would drill more wells to establish the commercial viability of the oil. Kenya hoping to build mining sector and attract explorers

08:14
Kenya will appoint a company to conduct a year-long airborne survey to map its mineral deposits and gather reliable data to attract mining firms. Kenya has proven deposits of titanium, gold and coal -- and is also understood to hold significant deposits of copper, manganese and rare earth minerals. In May, a new law came into effect that includes giving the government a 10% share in projects that meet minimum investment thresholds. It's known as free-carry interest. The law also sets the average rate of royalties for the government for various minerals at 6%, with miners paying a lower rate when they process the minerals locally. Base Titanium, Kenya's first large-scale international mining project, shipped its debut consignment of minerals in February 2014 after years of delays.

Turkana Oil Economic Impact

02:26
Economists have begun breaking down the expected impact of Monday's announcement of Kenya's discovery of promising oil deposits in Turkana County. While the economy is expected to grow exponentially once commercially exploitation begins, the government will be required to exercise caution when signing revenue sharing agreements with oil companies to ensure maximum benefit for the country as well as secure jobs for the local population. And as Henry Githaiga reports, the discovery of oil will transform Kenya from an agricultural economy to a mining economy while exporters may see their margins reduced due to the expected appreciation of the shilling.

Kenya is working to position herself as a more efficient destination for mining investment. A new Mining Act came into force in 2016, replacing mining legislation from 1940. However, it left controversial royalty rates enacted in 2013, firmly in place. One of the law's key features, is a split of revenues from mining royalties, among various governments, and communities in which the mines are located. CGTN's Ramah Nyang earlier spoke to Kenya's Cabinet Secretary in charge of Mining Dan Kazungu, for an update on the law's implementation.
