Countries with non-renewable resource wealth face both an opportunity and a challenge. When used well, these resources can create greater prosperity for current and future generations. Squandered, they can cause economic instability, social conflict, and lasting environmental damage. To benefit from resource wealth, citizens, private companies, and governments must make a broad range of decisions. Each requires leaders to consider complex options and trade-offs, and devise strategies to implement these policy choices. This intensive five-day course provides the training and insight required for policy leaders in the public and private sector to work towards better management and governance of oil, gas or mineral resources for a better future. The course builds a better understanding of the interests of the public and private sectors and facilitates dialogue and mutual appreciation of respective positions between these different groups. Globally recognised experts and academics have developed this course to encourage public and private sector leaders from multiple countries to share their own experiences, while gaining insights and specialist knowledge about natural resource management. The course looks at both technical policy aspects of managing resource and the complex interplay between governments, companies and citizens. The space race is back. Companies like SpaceX or Virgin Galactic have given a new push to the space exploration. But there is more than this: outside of Earth there are lots of natural resources to be exploited. Some asteroids are nothing but flying piles of minerals, water or even natural gas. Both Japan and America have already sent proves to the space in order to retrieve some samples of materials. But… what legislation would cover the space mining industry? What would happen if two companies have a corporate conflict on an asteroid? So far, the country with the most advance legislation on this matter is… Luxembourg! This small country has already a cluster of space mining companies. They are completely determined to lead this brand new industry… but how does this legislation work? Can Luxembourg become a space mining empire? We will answer all of this questions on this video. Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The UK government is going ahead with its plans to commence fracking across more than half of the country, hoping that it will boost the economy and provide an abundant supply of natural gas. Critics of the process argue that it contaminates groundwater and damages the environment and public health. A grassroots resistance movement has emerged to fight the introduction of fracking in the UK, and it appears to be gaining momentum throughout the country. In the upcoming documentary, VICE News travels to Blackpool, Lancashire, to see the fractivists in action. The seaside resort town is at the center of a David and Goliath battle between local residents and the energy company Cuadrilla over fracking in the region, which is believed to have one of the largest shale gas reserves in the Northern Hemisphere. You’ve heard of fracking, and you’re pretty sure lots of people don’t like it, but do you know how it actually works? Learn more at HowStuffWorks.com: http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/energy/hydraulic-fracking.htm Share on Facebook: http://goo.gl/M5kx1i Share on Twitter: http://goo.gl/FbuzEW Subscribe: http://goo.gl/ZYI7Gt Visit our site: http://www.brainstuffshow.com Fracking. You’ve heard of it. You know it’s controversial. But you might not know what it actually involves. Never fear: We’re here to put some fracking knowledge in your brain. Fracking is the delightfully cheeky-sounding nickname for Hydraulic Fracturing... which sounds a little bit less delightful and more like something you do to your enemies in Starcraft. But no! It is something we do to rocks. In the simplest terms, hydraulic fracturing is a way of getting more of the valuable fluids, like oil and natural gas, out of geologic formations under the ground. Deep under earth’s surface, there are deposits of rock that have huge reserves of oil and natural gas within them. But these fossil fuels aren’t like big lakes where you can just stick a straw in and suck. No, these reserves of oil and natural gas are found locked up in pores distributed throughout vast layers of rock, like shale. So how do you get them out at a reasonable pace? Let’s look at a typical fracking setup for something like shale gas: You start with a deep, vertical well, drilling a hole down to the level of the shale you want to mine. The depth will vary, but just for example, one company claims its average fracking well depth is 7,700 feet. That’s deep: almost one and a half miles, or about 2.3 kilometers. When you’re at the right depth, you take a 90-degree turn and continue to drill horizontally, parallel to the target rock layer. This horizontal section of the well can also travel thousands of feet. Now here’s where the “fracturing” comes in. First, you open up holes in the horizontal section of the pipe. Then, you vigorously push a liquid cocktail known as fracking fluid down into the borehole under high pressure. This fracking fluid is usually a mixture of water, some chemical additives -- like acids to help dissolve the rock, and gels to thicken the fluid -- and finally, solid particles called proppants – we’ll get to those in a second. When the mixture reaches the horizontal section of the pipe, it bleeds out through the holes into the surrounding rock, and the extremely high pressure causes the rock to form tons of little fractures, or cracks. Through these cracks, the reserves of fossil fuels contained in the rock can escape into the well to be pumped back up to the surface. What once was entombed in ancient rock is now on the way to powering your car or heating the water for your next shower. And those proppants I mentioned, which are often just grains of sand, help “prop” the cracks in the rock open, so the Earth’s precious bodily fluids continue to escape into the well without the miners applying continuous pressure. So that’s how it works, but then there’s the entirely separate question of whether fracking is a good idea. It’s controversial in many parts of the world. Some people claim it consumes too much fresh water, and worry about what will be done with the fracking fluid after it’s been used. And some opponents wonder if it will create earthquakes, or cause chemical contaminants to leak into our groundwater. Get industry secrets and in depth career development details: http://tinyurl.com/RigJobsManual Get access to web´s most comprehensive (and real) Oil Rig Job Bank: http://tinyurl.com/RigJobBank General Information on ¨How to get an Oil Rig Job Now¨ As global demand for oil grows, the oil rig industry is under increasing pressure to expand exploration and drilling operations. Many oil companies are capitalizing on relaxed government restrictions and technological advances to maximize production. The new rigs they build require workers to man them. Jobs on oil rigs are physically demanding and work conditions are often dangerous, but oil rig workers earn good salaries, often gain promotions, and can work in locations throughout the world. If you want to learn how to work on an oil rig, follow these guidelines. 1. Assess your ability to work under challenging circumstances. Most oil rig jobs require hard labor under trying conditions. Entry-level workers, like roughnecks and roustabouts, can expect certain challenges. 2. Pursue applicable training and certification. While entry-level jobs on oil rigs are plentiful and technically don't require any experience, few companies will hire a "green hand" to work on their billion-dollar platforms. In general, oil rig workers only need to be 18 or older, have a high school diploma and pass a pre-employment drug test. Successful applicants have usually pursued oil rig training independently or bring transferable skills to the job. All workers must meet certain minimum standards and certifications to work on an oil rig • Current work visa: Most companies will arrange for a current work visa for people working outside their native country. • Immunizations: Oil rig jobs are available in some of the world's most exotic locations, including the coasts of Africa and the waters of Southeast Asia. Workers from other regions often get jobs in these areas, but they must complete a full course of immunizations before they will be hired. • Specialized training courses: Many trade schools and colleges offer classes on various facets of the oil industry, including oil rig work. Most classes blend coursework with hands-on, field experience. Companies often provide training for workers looking to advance their careers in specialized fields. • Certification: All offshore workers are required to earn an Offshore Survival & Firefighting certificate. Specialized workers, like electricians, scaffolders and welders, must hold a state-issued license or certificate in order to work on a rig. 3. Decide what oil rig job is best for you. An oil rig is a place where you really can work hard to get ahead. Most crane operators, shift supervisors and other skilled workers started out in entry-level positions. They set themselves apart by pursuing advanced oil rig training and accepting additional assignments. Inexperienced workers can begin their careers in any one of several oil rig jobs • Roughneck: Roughnecks are general laborers who usually work on the rig deck. They move equipment and supplies, and also are responsible for cleaning equipment and work areas. • Roustabout: These workers are involved in drilling operations. They often move sections of drill pipe and clean spill. Roustabouts aspire to one day become the tool pusher, the senior supervisor on a rig. • Helper: Helpers assist skilled personnel, serving as apprentices for rig electricians, lead welders and heavy-equipment operators. • Painter: Offshore oil rigs, in particular, must be painted constantly to protect the structure from the corrosive effects of saltwater. This is hazardous duty, as painters often must be suspended in harnesses to reach remote areas of the platform. • Motorman: Motormen maintain and repair all rig machinery, including generators and deck equipment. • Deckhand: Deckhands build tow lines to secure barges and boats to the structure, facilitating loading and offloading of cargo. • Steward: Housekeeping needs, including laundry service and janitorial duties, must be met to ensure the smooth operation of an oil rig. • Assistant chef: Galley hands, including assistant chefs, work around the clock to prepare meals for all shifts. This is a job where mainstream experience is directly transferable to duties on the rig.

Development of shale gas by hydraulic fracturing (‘fracking’) is opposed by campaigners who hypothesise (amongst other things) that potable ground water supplies could be polluted by upward migration of fractures and any fluids they contain. There are very strong reasons for doubting this hypothesis, not least because migration of fractures to prolific aquifers would be highly unlikely to lead to pollution, but almost certain to result in drowning of the shale gas wells, rendering them unusable. Hence, despite having contrasting motivations, shale gas developers and environmental guardians turn out to have a strong common interest in avoiding inter-connection to aquifers. There is in fact a century-long analogue for such a ‘confluence’ of interests, provided by the history of longwall coal mining beneath the sea and major aquifers. Where large-scale mining proceeded from the surface downwards, major hydraulic inter-connection of shallow and deep zones did indeed result in widespread water pollution. However, where new mines were developed at depth without any connections to shallow old workings), complete hydraulic isolation from the near-surface hydrogeological environment was successfully maintained. This was despite the fact that longwall mining produced far greater stratal disruption than shale gas fracking ever could. A detailed example is presented from the successful operation of the Selby Coalfield beneath one of the UK’s main aquifers. This profound and sustained historical analogue provides a very clear lesson: given the lack of hydrogeological connectivity to shallow aquifers, shale gas fracking per se cannot contaminate shallow ground water. Provided operators observe long-established laws governing hydrocarbon wells and associated surface operations, other hydrogeological risks will also be minimal. Opponents of shale gas developments should therefore focus attention on more realistic potential impacts, most of which are familiar from almost any planning application, such as increased truck traffic on minor roads. From now until the time I finish this sentence, another 5,000 barrels of oil will have come out of the ground. Or 10,000 barrels by the end of this one, worth about a million dollars on world markets today. Suppose we created a World Oil Production Index (WOPI) as a measure of money, like a light year in distance. WOPI would equal a spacious Central Park apartment in a minute, the most expensive skyscraper ever built, Burj Khalifa, in a morning, and the net worth of Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg in two weeks. Or, alternatively, WOPI would surpass the GDP of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country of 70 million people, in a day and a half, and the entire annual aid budget to Africa in four days. It would, in fact, take about two weeks of WOPI each year to eliminate absolute poverty among the 1.3 billion people around the world who subsist on less than $1.25 a day each. It's not news of course that oil generates a lot of money. The share price of ExxonMobil, the question of who carries responsibility for Deepwater Horizon, whether Uganda will be able to stop importing petrol, and how much it costs to heat and light homes in millions of homes these are issues which depend directly on clauses in the contracts signed between the governments of the world and the oil companies. For most of the 150 years of oil production, these contracts have remained hidden, nested in a broader secrecy that surrounded all aspects of the industry. Governments claimed national security prerogatives, companies said commercial sensitivity precluded making them available. But the last few years have seen the emergence of the the idea that these contracts are ofsuch high public interest that they transcend normal considerations of confidentiality in business, and should be published. A few governments and companies have published contracts. Academic institutions such as the University of Dundee in the UK and NGOs such as the Revenue Watch Institute are just now, at the end of 2012, beginning to collect the contracts. Contract transparency is the natural next stage of the transparency movement. The initiatives which began in the 1990s around 'Resource Curse', leading to the creation of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative in 2002, have succeded in opening up a public conversation. Governments and companies now acknowledge the importance of openness and ethical business. CSR was born to counter 'Blood Diamonds'. But there is as yet little systematic public understanding of how these titanic industries actually work. Casual rhetoric about how "the government" or "the state" is being so secretive is not helpful because it misidentifies and actually understates the degree of dysfunctionality and asymmetry of information that can exist. This is often "deep state" stuff, belonging to a world of aides and special advisors with illdefined roles, where the regular apparatus of the state can also be out of the loop. In one country, senior diplomats in its foreign ministry lack the most basic understanding of the industry that generates 90 percent of its revenues and governs relations with its neighbours, with whom it shares sizeable fields. In another, the finance minister himself has been denied access to the petroleum contracts which determine how much revenue he is supposed to collect from international oil companies and others. In a third country a bid round went bad, and contracts were delayed for 2 years, because a phone call to clarify basic details wasn't returned. Ministers of the economy, planning and environment are rarely consulted about how contracts can integrate into broader government policy. We quote liberally from a family of petroleum contracts throughout the videos that come from 12 countries Afghanistan, Russia,USA, Venezuela, Bolivia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Ghana, Indonesia, Iraq, Libya and Timor Leste. They were selected to represent various structures in contracts, stages of development of petroleum industry.

Maxime Daigle worked in the oil industry for seven years but is now protesting against further development of the shale gas sector See also "Say No to Shale Gas June 30, 2011, Rexton, New Brunswick, Part 2"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRYHCYS18tQ#t=1m44s http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/story/2011/12/01/nb-daigle-shale-gas-concern-913.html Ex-oil worker blasts shale gas industry CBC News Posted: Dec 2, 2011 7:00 AM AT Last Updated: Dec 2, 2011 2:36 PM AT Maxime Daigle worked on oil and gas rigs for seven years before quitting to devote his life to protesting what he believes are the perils of shale gas drilling. Daigle spent his career in the oil and gas sector working in operations located in Alberta, British Columbia and across the United States. He started as a roughneck and worked his way up to drilling foreman. But he soon concluded the world's dependency on oil was killing the planet and he left the industry. "We all have our hands dirty on it. It's just an awakening I went through that made me realize what I was doing was wrong and that I needed to try and make a difference," he said. So Daigle moved back home to New Brunswick and went back to school to study electrical engineering with a focus on renewable energy. Daigle is one of the many citizens that are speaking out over fears about the shale gas industry. There are nine companies that currently have 71 different leases to explore for shale gas. While the industry is in its infancy, it has turned into a high-profile political issue for Premier David Alward's government. The Progressive Conservative government ushered in a new set of regulations in the summer that were intended to quiet the growing chorus of criticism against the industry. Instead, there were more protests and some mining companies faced blockades from citizens unhappy with their presence. The Alward government has promised that it will bring in a new Environmental Protection Plan in the spring. And Alward has committed, that if the shale gas industry is to have a future in New Brunswick, the provincial government will ensure it enforces the strictest regulations on the continent. Regulations are not enough But tough regulations are going to help save rural landscapes from mining problems, according to Daigle. "Some rig managers will make you contain contamination and pick up everything at the surface. But I've seen many times where you're told just to cover it with dirt, fresh dirt so nobody sees it," he said. The former oil and gas worker said he saw the negative impact that drilling was having on the environment as he moved higher up the corporate ladder. "I've seen enough that I know a fair amount of what can and can't be done right with regulations," he said. Daigle also tells a story about a time when a crew he was working with hit an abnormally large gas pocket that nearly blew up the well. He said the crew pumped thousands of barrels of toxic drilling fluid down the well in an effort to contain it. However, that fluid found its way back to the surface through an unforeseen fracture. "After four or five days of doing this, these farmers came on location. And they asked what was that black stuff that was coming into the river," Daigle said. "And when we were wondering why we couldn't regain circulation of that well, this was the reason. Everything was going up into the river." Environmental concerns Daigle's concerns aren't new. Many opponents to shale gas wells have often pointed to high-profile problems in the United States where local water wells were contaminated or there was an upward spike in air pollution. Those criticisms aren't being met without resistance from the natural gas industry. Three shale gas executives and one industry official wrote in separate opinion articles this week for CBC News that protecting the environment is a top priority for them. Two companies -- Corridor Resources and Contact Exploration -- have track records of working in New Brunswick. And SWN Resources Canada, which is currently examining results from recent seismic tests, has said it will not attempt to extract shale gas if it cannot protect the environment. Some in the scientific community have also downplayed some of the concerns raised by the anti-shale gas protesters. Adrian Park, a geologist at the University of New Brunswick, has said problems won't come about if shale gas mining is done the right way. Park said he believes the industry can mine for shale gas and protect the environment, if the proper regulations are in place. "Once you go more than 200 metres down, the pressure caused by the weight of overlying rock actually seals natural fissures and fractures and if you're hydro-fracking deeper than that, then that natural permeable barrier should protect your surface water," he said.

Anatomy of a Disaster tells the story of one of the worst industrial accidents in recent U.S. history--the March 23, 2005, explosion at the BP refinery in Texas City, Texas, which killed 15 workers, injured 180 others, and caused billions of dollars in economic losses. The U.S. Chemical Safety Board, an independent federal agency, investigated the accident. The CSB produced this video in March 2008 based on its comprehensive 341-page public report issued in 2007. The video includes a nine-minute animation detailing the events leading up to the blast. It features interviews with members of the CSB investigative team who spent two years studying the causes of the accident. Outside safety experts Prof. Trevor Kletz (Texas A&M University and Loughborough University, UK), Prof. Andrew Hopkins (Australian National University), and Mr. Glenn Erwin (United Steelworkers) provide insightful commentary on the significance of the accident to the world's petrochemical industry. The CSB believes that an understanding of the key findings, recommendations, and lessons from this investigation will help prevent future accidents. Watch more here: http://bit.ly/2wMCWhh VICE founder Suroosh Alvi travels to Mexico to see the effects of cartel oil theft firsthand. Mexico’s notoriously violent drug cartels are diversifying. Besides trafficking narcotics, extorting businesses, and brutally murdering their rivals, cartels are now at work exploiting their country’s precious number one export: oil. Every day as many as 10,000 barrels of crude oil are stolen from Mexico’s state-run oil company, Pemex, through precarious illegal taps, which are prone to deadly accidents. Pemex estimates that it loses $5 billion annually in stolen oil, some of which ends up being sold over the border in U.S. gas stations. As police fight the thieves and the cartels fight each other, the number of victims caught in the battle for the pipelines continues to climb. He has engaged at senior levels with several of the world’s largest companies, developing an understanding of many industries including oil and gas, construction, mining, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, banking, and aviation. A former senior Royal Air Force officer and professional pilot, Peter has been a Force Commander during combat flying operations and has seen service across the world. A seasoned crisis manager, his multi-faceted career has encompassed being an international negotiator for the UK Government; leading an aviation training and standards organisation; teaching post-graduates at the UK’s Defence College; flying the late Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher around the world; and leading multi-billion dollar international procurement projects. Peter is now dedicated to sharing his insights into how human beings operate, communicate and relate, specialising in organisational culture and leadership.
