Advalpal-Vedanta-2013

02:51
Vedanta's little known victims who are suffering from Asthama in Avalpalpal, Goa "About 50 Advalpal villagers - mostly women - today morning marched to the Sesa Goa mine forcing the mine to close down its operation. The concerned Sesa Goa mine T.C. no. 76/52 was is threatening village water sources. Villagers united to drive away Sesa Goa from their village. In fact the villagers are up in arms against the mining activities in the village and movement against the same is going on since 2005. Sesa Goa - owned by British company Vedanta- Salgaocars (T.C. no. 41/55) and Lithoferro (T.C. No. 89/52) are other two companies that are proving to be pests to the Advalpal villagers. Around 1,500 strong people of this village are at the receiving end of the mining menace. The companies and the State authorities so far have been able to 'manage' the village protest by use of Carrot and stick policy - Companies have dished out cash to those willing to accept while Police has been used to silence the protests so far. Dy Sp Shamba Sawant who has been recently transferred from Bicholim was the worse of the lot in threatening the Advalpal villagers. However it is not going to be too long that the situation will go out of control of the mining companies as well as the State authorities in case it refuses to heed to the voices of the People. Saleli and Colamb have already created history in Goa. Advalpal may very well be next to follow. This is particularly so because Police have registered criminal cases against the villagers on trespass charges. Sesa Goa has been instrumental in getting cases filed against 20 villagers of Advalpal. It is not just the common people that are criminally targeted by Sesa Goa but also village Sarpanch Harischandra Sawal has been targeted - politically. The Sesa Goa was served notice on illegal weigh bridge by the village panchayat; in response company got involved in dislodging village Sarpanch. So here is the case mining companies are not only involved in kingmaker roles for the Goa State Assembly members and Chief Ministers but also involved in dislodging of village Panchayat Sarpanch. The audacity of British company to file cases against the local villages is so clearly like the case of British East India Company that ultimately captured whole of India. After 61 years of Independence we have another British Company doing the same for the Advalpal villagers. Through this action it is nurturing new breed of freedom fighters against Imperialism. Considering the behaviour of the Sesa Goa it is not difficult to imagine the kind of shape Goa is going to take in future to come about. Goa mining scam latest updates: March 26, 2013 The Bombay High Court bench in Panaji on Tuesday directed the Goa government to file a First Information Report against over 150 people - including politicians, mine owners and bureaucrats - who have been indicted in the Justice M.B. Shah Commission report. The order was issued by Bombay High Court Chief Justice Mohit Shah following a petition by an electricity department employee, Kashinath Shetye, who said that the Rs.35,000 crore scam exposed by the judicial commission should be probed by police. Justice Shah directed the state government to "file an FIR in respect of offences alleged to have been committed by persons responsible for illegal mining in the state of Goa, including the lessees of the mines and all those who permitted such illegal mining of iron ore and manganese ore, in contravention of the relevant statutory provisions". The chief justice said that the FIR had to be filed "within a period of six weeks". Mr Shetye had first filed a complaint with the Crime Branch, which had not filed an FIR, forcing the petitioner to complain before the high court. The M.B. Shah Commission report had exposed a Rs.35,000 crore illegal mining scam, in which politicians, bureaucrats and mining companies were indicted. Mining in Goa has been banned for over five months now by the Supreme Court, which is hearing a petition filed by lawyer Prashant Bhushan and local environmental NGOs.

A victory against legalized illegal mining this week in Delhi High Court is noteworthy. Tremors even stronger than the ones they cause in the mining belt must be hitting miners in Goa and elsewhere in the country. Ramesh Gauns an activist and resident of Sarvona in Vathadev village of Bicholim taluka took his fight to the Delhi High Court after the National Environmental Appellate Authority dismissed his appeal against a firm for undertaking mining activity at Sarvona. M/s Zantye & Co. Pvt. Ltd. holding the lease to mine the 72-hectare Sarvona Iron and Manganese Ore Mine, applied for renewal, and for a change of mining method which would increase their iron ore production to 0.302 million tons per year at their Sarvona mine. They were given clearance by the Central Ministry in 2007. This clearance was challenged Gauns before the National Environmental Appellate Authority saying that the environment impact assessment was faulty and there was strong opposition from the public, approval from the panchayat was not obtained, and pollution was being caused to the Bicholim river, aquifers and fields. The Appellate Authority dismissed his appeal. Gauns then approached the Delhi High Court against the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests. The Delhi High Court agreed with Gauns' argument that the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the ministry did not take into consideration the objections of the locals. It merely said that the 'issues raised by the public during the public hearing were taken note of by the EAC.The High Court set aside the clearance and noted that any fresh consideration of the project should be subject to the moratorium set by the Government of India on new mining proposals in the State. While the case was being fought in Delhi, the Goa State Pollution Control Board, suspended operations in the Sarvona mine in May 2011. The suspension order against the Sarvona mine also directed the mine not to commence any mining or developmental activity at the site without obtaining valid consent to operate from the board as required under Section 21 of the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981. The suspension order against the Sarvona mine had been issued to Zantye & Co Pvt Ltd, Vasco da Gama, but the Sarvona mine has been now taken over by Trimurti Mining Services, a different management. The Mining and Industries Department, in a confidential note, demanded clarification or documentary evidence from M/s Trimurti Mining Services as to how they are the deemed owners and occupiers of mining lease, M/s Zantye & Co Pvt Ltd. This transfer of ownership issue was also raised by the MB Shah Commission that was investigating illegal mining in Goa. http://www.targetgoa.com/newsd-Ramesh-Gauns-wins-big-as-Delhi-HC-sets-aside-Union-ministry-s-environment-clearance-to-Bicholim-mine-3619

TRUTH vs HYPE: Anchored and presented by Sreenivasan Jain, Truth vs Hype is the only major news show that travels every week to ground zero to answer the questions that lie at the heart of every big story of our time -- from politics, to corruption, to conflict zones. Shot and edited as a cutting edge news documentary, each episode is backed by solid research, hard facts and a clear-eyed sifting through evidence. EPISODE- Goa: Land Mines The state of Goa emerged as the latest epicenter of links between political corruption and mining violations, drawing comparisons with Bellary (Karnataka, India), and speculation that its beleaguered Chief Minister Digambar Kamat could go the way of Mr. Yeddyurappa. That may well turn out to be the case, but it means understanding the roots of the current crisis - which lie in Goa's distinct history of mining iron ore, and in the extraordinary political interest in mining, interest so deep that it has profoundly compromised the state's official machinery meant to monitor, and if needed act against violations.

Need to preserve - A Tribe's Oral History

02:51
Oral history of the forest tribes of Goa awaits documentation, revival. Devidas Gaonkar is a forest tribal who has been regularly reporting on issues that concern various forest tribes of Goa. These issues include illegal mining, depleting level of groundwater, corruption, land grab etc. In this video, Devidas highlights the need of preserving Sarantari -- folk music that captures his tribe's genealogical and cultural history. Sarantari songs have been sung by the tribe for several centuries. These are songs about their professions, art, culture, religion, social traditions etc. Most of the community's elderly population cannot read or write. So, the tribe still doesn't have a written history of its own. The folk songs which are passed on from one generation to other are their only oral history. However, this history is now under threat as the young generation is not interested in learning the songs. One of the reasons is that they find the traditional songs slow and boring compared to the foot tapping modern music that they hear elsewhere. Also, there are no books or CDs or any other materials that can make these children aware of the songs and why they are valuable. So, few are interested in sitting with an elder and spend hours learning or singing the traditional songs. As a young tribal, Devidas finds himself caught in a dilemma. He understands the great value of the folk songs which are his community's only history that exists. But he also knows that young children will not learn them unless this value is explained to them or made available in a more attractive way. The solution, he thinks, can be through documentation of these songs and making them a part of the school syllabus and also put them in a series of video/audio albums. In Goa, the Social Welfare ministry has the budget and the authority to look after all tribal affairs. Additionally, the ministry also receives fund from the central government to preserve and promote tribal art and culture. Devidas says that since the ministry can take up the documentation of tribal history as a project. If you want to know the plans of the ministry on preservation and promotion of art& culture of the forest tribes of Goa, you can contact the department at this address: Directorate Of Social Welfare, Government of Goa, 18th June Road, Panjim - Goa. All that is left are sleepless nights, frequent calls from debtors and anxiety of an uncertain future. Exploring an Abandoned Iron Ore Mine in India

03:38
My friend and I came across this Abandoned Iron Ore mine in Goa, India. I'm not too sure of it's exact location as we happened to be lost at the time, but am pretty confident that it is around the Shrigao area of Goa. My friend and I jumped from our bikes to explore this area, but were soon accompanied by a security guard. The security guard had his shirt and belt buckle undone, and looked as if he was having a snooze. He quickly began to tidy himself up while also informing us that we 'HAD TO LEAVE' the area at once. My friend began to talk with the guard while I sneaked away to explore the abandoned mine. After 10 minutes or so I returned to where my friend was, and the security guard, who at this point was now begging us to leave. I feel that we made his day, the guard I mean, as this was a very lonely place, and we all like visitors from time to time. This was truly a strange and lost place. The silence was eerie.
