- Like our Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/oilvips - Oil and gas are generated from a source rock, organic matter buried in the depths of the earth. Once formed, they climb back towards the surface. On their way, cap rocks can impede their progress and they accumulate in reservoir rocks. Here they constitute hydrocarbon fields, which can be identified by interpreting seismic data (a sort of echography). The data is obtained with the help of a seismic ship. To confirm the interpretations of seismic data, two types of drilling gear exist. Each is adapted to a range of depth of water (down to more than 2500 meters). The platform seen here is a semi-submersible, which floats and retains its stabilised position by means of anchors fixed on the seabed. Platforms at sea are used not only for drilling but also for the production of hydrocarbons. This production consists of the separation of oil, gas and water, before the oil and gas is taken by pipeline towards a mainland terminal. Where it is impossible or too expensive to link the field to the coast by a pipeline, an FPSO ship is used (Floating Production Storage and Offloading barge). Onboard, the hydrocarbons and the water are separated. The oil is stored prior to being loaded on tankers and the gas is re-injected into the reservoir rocks. Gas from a field is taken to land through an underground gasoduct to a processing plant. There, if the gas is to be transported by sea, it is converted into liquid obtained by cooling it down to --163°C. When it arrives at the plant terminal, the liquid natural gas (LNG) is returned to its gaseous state in a re-gasification plant, before being introduced into the local gasoduct network. The LNG is stored in tanks before re-gasification. The crude oil is transported in a petroleum tanker, the capacity of which can attain 200 000 tons. It is commonly called a "super- tanker". The terminals capable of receiving such giants are few and far between. The ships used to transport the crude oil produced on an FPSO ship are of a much smaller capacity. The crude oil, before being refined, is stored in the port in the large capacity tanks. The natural gas is preserved in reservoirs (artificial or natural). It is ready to be injected by pumping into the gasoduct network for industrial and domestic use or as fuel in power-generating stations. As far as the crude oil goes, it is transported by oleoduct to the refinery. There it undergoes a number of transformations and blending. Most oil and gas companies’ business structures are organized according to business segment, assets, or function. The upstream segment of oil and gas is also known as exploration and production, or E&P because it encompasses activities related to searching for, recovering, and producing crude oil and natural gas. Upstream is all about wells, where to locate them; how deep and how far to drill them; and how to design, construct, operate and manage them to deliver the greatest possible return on investment with the lightest, safest and smallest operational footprint. In fact, the E&P sector should probably be called the EDP sector - because “you can’t find oil if you don’t drill wells.” Exploration Obtaining the Lease Let’s start with exploration which involves the operator obtaining a lease and permission to drill from the owner of onshore or offshore acreage thought to contain oil or gas. Then the operator must conduct geological and geophysical surveys to select the first well site to explore for, and hopefully find, economic accumulations of oil or gas. This well is often called a “wildcat well.” Drilling is physically creating the “borehole” in the ground that will eventually become a productive oil or gas well. This work is typically done by rig contractors and service companies in the Oilfield Services business sector. On a wellsite, there can be as many as 30-40 different service contractors providing expertise to the operator. Wells can be relatively simple or unbelievably complex. Wells can totally vertical for miles or both deep and horizontal. There are also highly complex “J” and “S” configured wells with numerous branches, or laterals, emanating from the original, or “mother”, hole. These are called “deviated wells.” Production Finally, let’s discuss production, where reserves are “converted to cash” by maximizing the recovery of hydrocarbons from subsurface reservoirs. Essentially, production is efficiently bringing the hydrocarbons to the surface and treating them as needed to make them marketable. So that’s the basics of E&P. We will drill deeper into each of these operations in the complete Oil 101 course at a later date. Now, let’s talk about unconventional resources, clearly the hottest topic in oil and gas over the last decade. Unconventional Future of Oil and Gas Unconventional resources are defined as any resource extracted, or produced, by any method other than the traditional vertical or slightly deviated well. US Mining Companies Show New Interest in Rare Earths

These are mined from the earth and used to make technology from mobile phones to missiles. The United States once led the world in rare earths. Today China controls almost all production. Premier Wen Jiabao says China will not use these metals as a diplomatic weapon. But Japan says exports meant for that country have remained at Chinese ports as a result of a recent dispute. The United States stopped mining rare earths in two thousand two. Companies blamed environmental rules and low-priced imports from China. But now exploration is moving forward again. Edward Cowle is president and chief executive of a company called U.S. Rare Earths. He and his partners gained rights to some land in the American West about fifteen years ago. They had been interested in thorium -- a radioactive element that can fuel nuclear reactors but not be processed into weapons. Mr. Cowle later found that the land also held a lot of rare earth metals -- lately a subject of intense interest. The company has not started mining yet. It still has to get permits and work with other businesses to put operations in place. Ed Cowle says a lot of work remains. He says the earliest that they could open the mine would be in six to seven years. Another American company is Molycorp. Jim Sims, the public affairs director, says Molycorp has already begun producing three thousand tons of rare earths a year. That makes the United States the world's second largest producer, a distant second. Mr. Sims says Molycorp is the western hemisphere's only producer of rare earth products. The company says the largest reserves of rare earths outside of China are in its mine in Mountain Pass, California, and in the Mount Weld area of Australia. Jim Sims says Molycorp spends only about ten percent on mining. The big cost is in chemically separating the rare earths from the minerals that carry them. He says Molycorp raised about three hundred eighty million dollars when it sold stock to the public for the first time in July. The company aims to increase production to twenty thousand tons by two thousand twelve. It says that would more than meet current levels of demand in the United States. Avanti Mining Plans 5th Largest Molybdenum Mine The Kitsault project is located in the Nisga'a traditional lands -- the Nass Wildlife Area. Ideal Infrastructure This mining project is a proposed redevelopment of an existing abandoned mine, and is located south of Alice Arm, and approximately 200 km by road northwest of Terrace, BC. The mine site is ideally situated. It is accessible by road from Kitsault and New Aiyansh via the Nisga'a Highway and Forest Service Roads. The property also has a 42 km 138 kv powerline connected to the Aiyansh substation, a part of the BC Hydro grid. This existing line can be reactivated to its full capacity. The Kitsault project is located within the Lime Creek Watershed and drains into Alice Arm. This is a separate geographical location from the Nass River Watershed to the east. The Promise of Avanti Mining Kitsault has three known molybdenum mineral deposits: Kitsault, Bell Moly, and Roundy Creek. These projects hold great promise for Avanti Mining and its neighbors in the Nass Valley. Avanti proposes to build a 40,000 tpd mining facility, which would produce an average of 24.5 million pounds of molybdenum per year over a 15 year mine life. Using conservative molybdenum prices, the after tax value of the Kitsault project is approximately $1.6 billion. When in full production, Kitsault will be the fifth largest primary molybdenum mine in the world. The promise of Avanti is to convert the unseen assets below the ground into a sustainable future for its shareholders and the local community. In the 30 years since the Kitsault mine was closed, Molybdenum has become an essential commodity in the modern world. During the two year construction period, the company will employ approximately 500 people. During the 15 year life of the mine, some 360 full time jobs will be created. The mine development plan calls for a mine camp to house many of these employees. Preference will be given to the Nisga'a for training, employment and service contracts. The mine will also create an estimated 900 indirect jobs providing goods and services to the mine and the local communities. Additionally, Avanti believes the mine's life can be substantially expanded beyond 15 years, based on known additional resources and the company's ongoing exploration program. Exploring the Emancipation Mine

The former Emancipation mine is located 1 kilometre west of the Coquihalla River, between Fifteen Mile and Ladner creeks. Hope located approximately 15 kilometres to the southwest. The Emancipation mine was developed by five adits (adits 1-4 and A) concentrated along a series of gold-bearing quartz ±carbonate veins that cut the Spider Peak Formation. These veins were the principal ore source of the mine. However, two of the lower workings (adits 3 and 4) were driven on a talc-bearing zone within the Hozameen fault that was apparently barren. In 1933, a drift on the No. 4 level intersected a 3.35-metre wide vein directly beneath the ore zone in the No. 2 winze. The central part contained abundant sulphides and a chip sample across 2.44 metres yielded 13.71 grams per tonne gold and 3.43 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 23492). A picked sample from the face yielded 72.68 grams per tonne gold (Assessment Report 23492). There are essentially three sets of quartz± carbonate veins at the mine. These include the Boulder vein and the Dike vein, separated by a set of irregular, reverse- dipping, flat veins. Both the Dike and Boulder veins typically follow reverse fractures and vary markedly in attitude and character along strike and with depth. The flat veins apparently follow second order sigmoidal tension fractures. On the surface, close to adit 2, the Boulder vein strikes north and follows the faulted contact between the Spider Creek Formation and the Ladner Group. Farther north, the vein system splays, swings to a northeasterly strike and is locally hosted entirely within Ladner rocks. It is the widest vein on the property, varying between 0.5 and 4.6 metres in width, and dipping from 50 to 65 degrees west. It contains mainly milky to clear massive quartz, and minor amounts of calcite. The vein carries sporadic traces of disseminated pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite, but little or no gold. Locally, the margins of the Boulder vein grade outward into brecciated zones up to 3 metres wide. These comprise fragments of Ladner rock with disseminated sulphides set in a vein matrix that contains minor to trace amounts of albite, calcite, dolomite, siderite, gypsum, pyrrhotite and marcasite. Surface drilling north of the Emancipation mine was conducted to delineate geological contacts, structures, quartz veins and mineralization. The drill holes intersected similar structures and rock types as were intersected during underground drilling. This drilling was favourable for sulphide replacement zones but no significant altered or mineralized zones were found. In 1910, the construction of the Kettle Valley railway opened the area to prospecting and mineral exploration; this led to the discovery and staking of the Emancipation claim in 1913. Intermittent production occurred at the Emancipation gold mine between 1916 and 1941. By 1921, a considerable amount of underground development work had been carried out and a 5-stamp mill installed with a 4.53 tonne per day capacity. The operator at this time was Liberator Mining Co. Between 1922 and 1933 ownership changed hands several times, with Dawson Gold Mines Ltd. as the main operator. Kettle Valley Gold Mine Ltd. conducted limited work in 1937. The mill operated at 22.68 tonnes per day with ore mined from the No. 2 level. In 1971, Aquarius Resources Ltd. restaked the Emancipation as the Hope claim group and renewed exploration on the property. In 1972, the underground workings were surveyed, mapped and sampled. Surface geological mapping was carried out in 1973. From 1974 to 1976, an extensive surface exploration was carried out under the supervision of Cochrane Consultants Ltd. In 1980, an all-weather road was constructed and further underground mapping and sampling was carried out. A surface and underground drilling program was carried out in 1981 by Aquarius Resources Ltd. Underground drilling consisted of 31 drill holes, totalling 1177 metres. Surface drilling consisted of 10 drill holes, totalling 901 metres. In 1991 and 1992, Homegold Resources, under option from Anglo Swiss Mining, conducted considerable underground refurbishing on the No. 3 and 4 levels. Three underground drill holes were completed, totalling 81.38 metres. During 1994 through 2001, Homegold Resources completed programs of geological mapping and prospecting. In 2008, Module Resources prospected the area. The Emancipation gold mine was active between 1916 and 1941, producing 18,818 grams of silver, 90,104 grams of gold, 61 kilograms of lead and 85 kilograms of zinc from a total of 1158 tonnes mined.

Britannia Beach is a small unincorporated community in the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District located approximately 55 kilometers north of Vancouver, British Columbia on the Sea-to-Sky Highway on Howe Sound. It has a population of about 300. The community first developed between 1900 and 1904 as the residential area for the staff of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company. The residential areas and the mining operation were physically interrelated, resulting in coincidental mining and community disasters through its history. Today, the town is host to the Britannia Mine Museum, formerly known as the British Columbia Museum of Mining, on the grounds of the old Britannia Mines. The mine's old concentrator facilities, used to separate copper ore from its containing rock, are a National Historic Site of Canada Copper mine (1900-1974) A copper discovery on Britannia Mountain by Dr. A. A. Forbes in 1888 led to the development of the Britannia Mine. In 1899, a mining engineer named George Robinson was able to convince financial backers that the property had great potential. For several years, companies were formed, merged and dissolved in efforts to raise capital. The Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, a branch of the Howe Sound Company, finally commenced mining in the early 1900s, and owned the site for the next sixty years. The first ore was shipped to the Crofton Smelter on Vancouver Island in 1904, and the mine achieved full production in 1905. A town had grown up around the mine and a Post Office opened on January 1, 1907 where it was named after the nearby mine. In 1912 John Wedderburn Dunbar Moodie was authorized to upgrade the operation and increase production from the mine. Improvements in the mineral separation processes stimulated plans for a new mill (No. 2), which was completed in 1916 and was capable of producing 2000 tons of ore per day. The onset of World War I increased the demand for copper and the price rose sharply. On March 21, 1915 an avalanche destroyed the Jane Camp. Sixty men, women and children were killed and it was a terrible blow to the tiny community. Construction began immediately on a new, safer town at the 2,200-foot (670 m) level above the Britannia Beach site. This portion of the community became known as the "Town site" or "Mount Sheer". In March 1921 during a brief period when the mine was shut down, mill No. 2 burnt to the ground. On October 28, 1921 after a full day of torrential rain, a massive flood destroyed much of that portion of the community and mine operations that existed on the lower beach area. 50 of 110 homes were destroyed and thirty-seven men, women and children lost their lives. The flood was caused because the mining company had dammed up a portion of the Creek during the construction of a railway, and when this dam gave way the town below was flooded. Carleton Perkins Browning directed the reconstruction of this portion of the community and the new No. 3 mill, which stands today. Being an isolated, close knit community which could only be accessed by boat, life in both of Britannia's towns was never dull. Facilities included libraries, club rooms, billiard rooms, swimming pools, tennis courts and even bowling. A thriving social calendar saw sporting events, theatrical productions, dances, movies and parties held throughout the year. The mine boomed in the late 1920s and early 1930s, becoming the largest producer of copper in the British Commonwealth by 1929, under the management of the mine manager C.P. Browning. In the 1940s there were talks to build an artist village in Britannia's hills, but that plan did not proceed. During the Great Depression, miners unionized in 1946 and suffered through their first strike. Low copper prices saw the Britannia Mine Company reduced to seven employees, and in 1959 it went into liquidation. In 1963 the Anaconda Mining Company bought the property and production continued for the next eleven years. 300 employees managed to produce 60,000 tons of concentrate each year. Ferries services stopped around May 1965 after the highway and railway connections had been constructed. The connections made it easier to transport the copper, but high operating costs and taxes eventually forced the mine to close on November 1, 1974. The company did not attempt to clean up the mine and chemical wastes that it produced, since environmental protection laws had not yet been enacted and enforcement of the Fisheries Act was never applied On April 1, 1975 the BC Museum of Mining was opened to the public, and was designated as a National Historic Site in 1988. The following year, 1989, the Museum site was designated a British Columbia Historic Landmark.

Last month for instance your stock was up +80% proving that, again, my analysts and editors know what they’re talking about. Can you tell me why your stock did as well as it did? Paul Farquharson: Well, I think Tracy, you know, there’s a lot of different factors there, but we have been, kind of, trying to get the word out lately about the company. We’ve just finished a lot of metallurgical test work. That work is done now so we can prove that we can make a product from our actual ore itself and the Prospectors and Developers Association it happened just a little while ago so we were really out talking about the company and making things happen. Tracy Weslosky: Well, of course, you had a corporate update. This corporate update — I’ve seen a lot of companies put out corporate updates that do not get as good of a response as yours did. You did earlier in March. Of course, the metallurgic studies that you were talking about, I was reading it included a final high purity cobalt salts results. Can you help me understand what this means? Paul Farquharson: Well, the metallurgical work is feasibility level metallurgical work and that’s where we’re heading toward, a feasibility study. What we did, we actually took our own ore from our project in Salmon, Idaho and we delivered it to Hazen Engineering in Denver and Hazen made a concentrate from our ore. Then once you have a concentrate it goes to Cytec. Cytec are the ones that provide us with the reagents. They hit it with the reagents and they make a pregnant leach solution, which once again is our ore. That solution then gets shipped to General Electric because they have the crystallizers and we made an ultrapure cobalt chemical, cobalt sulfate heptahydrate, which is used in the battery industry. Tellurium (Te) and selenium (Se) are 'E-tech' elements essential in photovoltaic (PV) solar panels. They are rare and mined only in small quantities; their location within the Earth is poorly known; recovering them is technically and economically challenging; and their recovery and recycling has significant environmental impacts. Yet demand is expected to surge and PV film production will consume most Se mined and outstrip Te supply by 2020. Presently, these elements are available only as by-products of Cu and Ni refining and their recovery from these ores is decreasing, leading to a supply risk that could hamper the roll-out of PV. Meeting future demand requires new approaches, including a change from by-production to targeted processing of Se and Te-rich ores. Our research aims to tackle the security of supply by understanding the processes that govern how and where these elements are concentrated in the Earth's crust; and by enabling their recovery with minimal environmental and economic cost. This will involve 20 industrial partners from explorers, producers, processors, end-users and academia, contributing over £0.5M. Focussed objectives across 6 environments will target key knowledge gaps: The magmatic environment: Develop methods for accurately measuring Se and Te in minerals and rocks - they typically occur in very low concentrations and research is hampered by the lack of reliable data. Experimentally determine how Te and Se distribute between sulfide liquids and magmas - needed to predict where they occur - and ground-truth these data using well-understood magmatic systems. Assess the recognised, but poorly understood, role of "alkaline" magmas in hydrothermal Te mineralisation. The hydrothermal environment: Measure preferences of Te and Se for different minerals to predict mineral hosts and design ore process strategies. Model water-rock reaction in "alkaline" magma-related hydrothermal systems to test whether the known association is controlled by water chemistry. The critical zone environment: Determine the chemical forms and distributions of Te and Se in the weathering environment to understand solubility, mobility and bioavailability. This in turn controls the geochemical halo for exploration and provides a natural analogue for microbiological extraction. The sedimentary environment: Identify the geological and microbiological controls on the occurrence, mobility and concentration of Se and Te in coal - a possible major repository of Se. Identify the geological and microbiological mechanisms of Se and Te concentration in oxidised and reduced sediments - and evaluate these mechanisms as potential industrial separation processes. Microbiological processing: Identify efficient Se- and Te-precipitating micro-organisms and optimise conditions for recovery from solution. Assess the potential to bio-recover Se and Te from ores and leachates and design a bioreactor. Ionic liquid processing: Assess the ability of ionic solvents to dissolve Se and Te ore minerals as a recovery method. Optimise ionic liquid processing and give a pilot-plant demonstration. This is the first holistic study of the Te and Se cycle through the Earth's crust, integrated with groundbreaking oreprocessing research. Our results will be used by industry to: efficiently explore for new Te and Se deposits; adapt processing techniques to recover Te and Se from existing deposits; use new low-energy, low-environmental impact recovery technologies. Our results will be used by national agencies to improve estimates of future Te and Se supplies to end-users, who will benefit from increased confidence in security of supply, and to international government for planning future energy strategies. The public will benefit through unhindered development of sustainable environmental technologies to support a low-CO2 society. April 6, 2014 -- Don Lay, President of Medallion Resources ('Medallion', TSXV: MDL | OTCQX: MLLOF) speaks to Tracy Weslosky, Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of InvestorIntel, about Medallion's unique position in the rare earths sector. Medallion is not an exploration play and is unique in that it is focused on "getting to production quickly and Dr. Bird, whom I am partnered with, is really the brains behind this. He believes that the best way to get to a significant rare earth production in the short term is by exploiting by-product resources from rare earths." Medallion's resource, in that respect is monazite, which is a rare earth rich phosphate found in great quantity as the by-product of other types of mining such as heavy mineral sands. Medallion plans to treat monazite from mineral sands, derived from other sources in order to avoid traditional mining development. The challenge for Medallion is in where to process the resource rather than where to find it. While most miners prefer to process next to their mine, from Medallion's perspective, the resource comes from a variety of suppliers, so "we're looking to process separately, and we've chosen Oman in the Middle East as the site for that." Many of the oil rich Gulf States are looking for ways to diversify their economies as oil supplies run out. The Middle East wants to diversify its industrial base: "and they don't take the word 'industry' as a negative....Oman happens to be the country that we thought was best suited. It's on the Indian Ocean, around the Straits of Hormuz, geopolitically away from some of the more sensitive areas there. Also, Oman is building a new industrial city called Dokum, which "we thought was just a terrific place to start a rare earth value chain, starting with rare earth extraction from monazite." Medallion's main partner in Oman is the Takamul Investment Company ('Takamul') a subsidiary of the State owned Oman Oil Company, which has been very active in the metals, petrochemicals, and downstream minerals sectors especially in the area of Duqm. Medallion has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Takamul, in a 60/40 split (Medallion/Takamul) for the project. Takamul has already started investing, "the next significant step will be to get a larger full feasibility and environmental impact studies for the proposed plant." In 2014, apart from the aforementioned studies, Medallion aims to secure the key long term feedstock agreements, an essential for the Company. Don says, he hopes to secure five and ten year agreements for supply of the monazite: "and thereafter, we will be in a position to start having discussions with potential strategic partners such as off-takers and those types of things, of course assuming that the feasibility study turns out as expected." Don also stressed that the project's economics are very attractive and that it's important recognize that even in China, known for supplying 95-96% of the world's rare earths, some 50% of production, comes from by-products. Medallion has avoided some of the biggest risks of the mining space altogether with no need to prove the quality of its minerals' grade or to undertake scoping studies, cushioning the cost of exploration preliminaries that absorb so much of today's limited project finance availability. Further to explaining the Search Minerals resource, Dr. Dreisinger discusses their patent pending for a direct extraction process technology. Tracy Weslosky: I'm really excited about interviewing you, of course, have a doctorate in metallurgical engineering. Is that correct? Dr. David Dreisinger: That's correct. From Queen's University in Kingston. Tracy Weslosky: Okay so we have a metallurgy expert. That's one of the hottest topics on InvestorIntel right now because everybody claims they have a process to extract rare earths. Of course, you're with Search Minerals, right? Dr. David Dreisinger: That's correct. Tracy Weslosky: Can you start by telling us what Search Minerals has? Dr. David Dreisinger: Search Minerals has done exploration in Labrador at three different sites, including the Port Hope Simpson Belt, the Red Wine Complex and also up in Strange Lake. The Port Hope Simpson area is a wholly owned area of investigation, of exploration. We've identified the Foxtrot deposit at that site, which we now have an indicated and inferred resource for, which we've been focusing our metallurgy development on. Tracy Weslosky: Now your stock was up +14.50% in February and so we are very bullish on rare earths and you have a lot of heavy rare earths. Is that correct? Dr. David Dreisinger: That's correct. About 20% of our rare earths in our deposit are heavies, including the all-important dysprosium, which is very much in vogue in terms of the magnetic materials. Tracy Weslosky: Yes. Dysprosium is definitely in vogue, but so tell me more about this. You have a patent pending? Dr. David Dreisinger: Yes we do. We went through initial metallurgical development back in 2012 and did the classical upgrading to make a concentrate chemical treatment to extract the rare earths and made a rare earth --- a mixed rare earth oxide as our final product and then realized that was probably too expensive to do all those different steps with our material. We went back and looked at it and tried to simplify the process and came up with a direct extraction method. Tracy Weslosky: Can you tell us more? Dr. David Dreisinger: I sure can. The direct extraction method, instead of crushing and grinding to very fine size our mineral, we basically just crush the material to a fairly coarse size, about 3 millimeters, and then we apply modest amounts of acid and heat that acid ore mixture to about 200 degrees Celsius, about the same temperature as cooking cookies in the oven at home. Then allow the acid to penetrate into the rock and make the rare earth minerals converted into water soluble form. It starts as a rare earth mineral that's insoluble becomes soluble with the acid application. Then after water leaching the rare earths are extracted from the coarse rock into the solution from which we then recover our mixed rare earth product after some chemical purification steps. Tracy Weslosky: Of course, if you're an audience member of InvestorIntel you will appreciate that the extraction of rare earths is not like pulling gold from the ground. It's very complex. Yet, potential impacts on deep sea ecosystems are yet to be assessed by the scientific community, and local communities are not being consulted. The prospects of this new, experimental form of mining are re-actualizing a colonial, frontier mentality and redefining extractivist economies for the twenty-first century. This webseries addresses different issues related to this process, from resource politics to ocean governance by international bodies, prompting today’s shift towards a "blue economy" but also efforts to defend sustained ocean literacy when the deep ocean, its species, and resources remain largely unmapped and unstudied. Episode 1: Tools for Ocean Literacy is a cartographical survey of technologies that have contributed to ocean literacy and seabed mapping. Structured around a single shot along a vertical axis, the episode inquires about deep sea mining and the types of geologic formations where it is set to occur, particularly hydrothermal vents. Understanding the process of deep sea mining demands not only a temporal investigation – its main dates, legal, and corporate landmarks, and scientific breakthroughs – but also a spatial axis connecting the seafloor to outer space cartographic technologies. This technology explores new dimensions and might be a game changer for the mining industry. In May 2009, BHP Billiton, SODERN and CSIRO decided to jointly develop a new PFTNA logging tool, especially designed to meet current operating procedures, field conditions and borehole characteristics common to ore extraction sites. This tool is primarily aimed at measuring boreholes drilled for exploration and resource estimations. It is expected to log more than 100 kilometers a year by measuring the numerous 140 mm diameter holes commonly drilled on sites, using reverse circulation drilling. Operators quickly promoted the tool and its immediate benefits. In addition of resource modeling, the FastGradeTM may be also used in blast holes. Here, the log obtained, in real time, makes the optimization of explosive charging holes possible. The creation of a particle-sized separation of ore, based on its grade, makes it easy to extract low-grade material through the processing cycle.
