MATH & GEOMETRY Vocabulary and Terminology in English
Do you need to speak about or understand mathematics or geometry in English? This lesson teaches you all the terminology you need to translate your mathematics knowledge into English. This video will be especially important for students who are studying in an English-speaking country, and for professionals who need to work with English speakers. I'll also explain the correct sentence structures we use to talk about common mathematical operations in English. For example: "One plus one equals two", "one and one is two", "if you add one and one, you get two", and many more. This lesson covers terminology about: operations (+ - * /), fractions, decimals, exponents, roots, shapes, measurements, angles, triangles, and much more. Don't let English stand in the way of your mathematics! TAKE THE QUIZ: https://www.engvid.com/math-geometry-vocabulary-english/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. Welcome to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. In today's video I'm going to look at some math. Now, I know this is an English site, don't worry, I'm not actually going to do any math. Philosophy and English major, so math not my favourite, but I will give you some math terminology, words that you need if you're going to do math. Now, a lot of you might be engineers or you might be students who came from another country to an English-speaking country, and you go to math class and you know the math, but you're not sure of the wording. Okay? So this is what we're looking at, terminology, only the words that you need to go into a math class or to do some math on your own. Okay? We're going to start with the very basics. You know all these functions already. I'm just going to give you some ways to talk about them, and then we'll move on to some other functions and other parts. So, you know the four basic functions: "addition", "subtraction", "multiplication", and "division". What you need to know is ways to say an equation. Right? You know an equation. "1 + 1 = 2", that's an equation. "x2 + y3 = znth", that's also an equation which I'm not even going to get into. So, let's start with addition. The way to talk about addition. You can say: "1 plus 1", "plus", of course is "+" symbol, that's the plus symbol. "1 plus 1 equals 2." 2 means the total, is also called the "sum". Now, you can also say: "The sum of 1 and 1 is 2." You can also just say, without this part: "1 and 1 is 2." So you don't need the plus, you don't need the equal; you can use "and" and "is", but it means the same thing. Everybody will understand you're making... You're doing addition. Sorry. Doing addition, not making. If you add 1 and 1, you get 2. Okay? So: "add" and "get", other words you can use to express the equation. Now, if you're doing math problems, math problems are word problems. I know a lot of you have a hard time understanding the question because of the words, so different ways to look at these functions using different words, different verbs especially. If we look at subtraction: "10 minus 5 equals 5". "5", the answer is also called the "difference". For addition it's the "sum", for subtraction it's "difference". "10, subtract 5 gives you 5." Or: "10 deduct"-means take away-"5", we can also say: "Take 5 away"... Oh, I forgot a word here. Sorry. "Take 5 away from 10, you get", okay? "10 subtract 5", you can say: "gives you 5", sorry, I had to think about that. Math, not my specialty. So: "Take 5 away from 5, you get 5", "Take 5 away from 5, you're left with", "left with" means what remains. Okay, so again, different ways to say the exact same thing. So if you see different math problems in different language you can understand what they're saying. Okay? Multiplication. "5 times 5", that's: "5 times 5 equals 25". "25" is the "product", the answer to the multiplication, the product. "5 multiplied by 5", don't forget the "by". "5 multiplied by 5 is 25", "is", "gives you", "gets", etc. Then we go to division. "9 divided by 3 equals 3", "3", the answer is called the "quotient". This is a "q". I don't have a very pretty "q", but it's a "q". "Quotient". Okay? "3 goes into... 3 goes into 9 three times", so you can reverse the order of the equation. Here, when... In addition, subtraction, multiplication... Well, actually addition and multiplication you can reverse the order and it says the same thing. Here you have to reverse the order: "goes into" as opposed to "divided by", so pay attention to the prepositions as well. Gives you... Sorry. "3 goes into 9 three times", there's your answer. "10 divided by 4", now, sometimes you get an uneven number. So: "10 divided by 4" gives you 2 with a remainder of 2, so: "2 remainder 2". Sometimes it'll be "2R2", you might see it like that. Okay? So these are the basic functions you have to look at. Now we're going to get into a little bit more complicated math things. We're going to look at fractions, exponents, we're going to look at some geometry issues, things like that.
Oil Drilling | Oil & Gas Animations
- Like our Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/oilvips - Geologists and geophysicists have agreed on the existence of a "prospect", a potential field. In order to find out if hydrocarbons are indeed trapped in the reservoir rock, we must drill to hit them. Bearing in mind the knowledge acquired about the substratum and the topography of the land, the best position for the installation of the drilling equipment is determined. Generally it is vertically above the point of maximum thickness of the geological layer suspected of containing hydrocarbons. The drillers then make a hole in conditions that are sometimes difficult. Of small diameter (from 20 to 50 cm) this hole will generally go down to a depth of between 2000 and 4000 meters. Exceptionally, certain wells exceed 6000 m. One of them has even exceeded 11 000 m! Certain fields can be buried at a depth equivalent to the height of 12 Eiffel Towers ... The derrick is the visible part of the drilling rig. It is a metal tower several tens of meters high. It is used to vertically introduce the drill strings down the hole. These drill strings are made up of metallic tubes screwed end to end. They transmit a rotating movement (rotary drilling) to the drilling tool (the drill bit) and help circulate a liquid called "mud" (because of its appearance) down to the bottom of the well. The drilling rig works like an enormous electric hand-drill of which the derrick would be the body, the drill strings the drive and the drilling tool the drill bit. The most usual tool is an assembly of three cones -- from which comes the name "tri cone" -- in very hard steel, which crushes the rock. Sometimes when the rock being drilled is very resistant, a single- block tool encrusted with diamonds is used. This wears down the rock by abrasion. Through the drill pipes, at the extremity of which the drill bit rotates, a special mud is injected, which the mud engineer prepares and controls. This mud cools the drill bit and consolidates the sides of the borehole. Moreover it avoids a gushing of oil, gas or water from the layer being drilled, by equilibrating the pressure. Finally, the mud cleans the bottom of the well. As it makes its way along the pipes, it carries the rock fragments (cuttings) to the surface. The geologist examines these cuttings to discover the characteristics of the rocks being drilled and to detect eventual shows of hydrocarbons. The cuttings, fragments of rock crushed by the drill bit, are brought back up to the surface by the mud. To obtain information on the characteristics of the rock being drilled, a core sample is taken. The drill bit is replaced by a hollow tool called a core sampler, which extracts a cylindrical sample of several meters of rock. This core supplies data on the nature of the rock, the inclination of the layers, the structure, permeability, porosity, fluid content and the fossils present. After having drilled a few hundred of meters, the explorers and drillers undertake measurements down the hole called loggings, by lowering electronic tools into the well to measure the physical parameters of the rock being drilled. These measures validate, or invalidate, or make more precise the hypotheses put forward earlier about the rocks and the fluids that they contain. The log engineer is responsible for the analysis of the results of the various loggings. The sides of the well are then reinforced by steel tubes screwed end to end. These tubes (called casings) are cemented into the ground. They isolate the various layers encountered. When hydrocarbons are found, and if the pressure is sufficient to allow them come to the surface naturally, the drillers do a flow check. The oil is allowed to come to the surface during several hours or several days through a calibrated hole. The quantity recovered is measured, as are the changes in pressure at the bottom of the well. In this way, a little more knowledge is gained about the probable productivity of the field. If the field seems promising, the exploration team ends the first discovery well and goes on to drill a second, even several others, several hundred or thousand meters further away. In this way, the exploration team is able to refine its knowledge about the characteristics of the field. The decision to stop drilling is made only when all these appraisal wells have provided sufficient information either to give up the exploration or to envisage future production. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Like our Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/oilvips Twitter: https://twitter.com/oilvips And Don't forget to subscribe to our channel

Horizontal Directional Drilling - how it works
3D animation that shows the technique of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Directional drilling (or slant drilling) is the practice for drilling non-vertical wells. Obstacles and other objects can be by-passed using this computer controlled technique. With HDD, the drilling equipment, which connects to the drilling tube on the surface, pulls the cable, casing pipes or pipeline through the ground. This avoids the need for costly excavation. The drilling process is divided into 3 steps: 1. Pilot (drill head or drill bit) 2. Reaming (by a fly-cutter) 3. NEW CONFIGURABLE NAAMS COMPONENTS FROM MISUMI USA! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYi48fVdGfA -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- SHAFT TOLERANCES & FITS | MECH MINUTES | MISUMI USA http://www.misumiusa.com Previously on MechMinutes: Shafting series, we covered primary considerations when selecting material and surface treatments. All past videos are posted for your viewing pleasure to get caught up to this week’s episode of Tolerances & Fits. A ‘tolerance’ is the allowable amount of variation from a specified dimension. When tolerances are combined between a shaft and bore, they can be classified into three categories known as ‘Fits’. The Clearance [Fit], Interference [Fit], and Transition [Fit] can either assist in assembly, or prevent them from being disassembled easily. A Clearance fit ensures a shaft can be freely inserted into the intended bore. This generally means the maximum limit of the shaft is less than the minimum limit of the bore diameter. An Interference fit guarantees the shaft and bore will interfere at every point within their tolerance zone. This is commonly referred to as a ‘Press Fit’. Often the two components must be joined by excessive force, or by altering the atmospheric temperature to slightly expand or shrink the diameter for assembly. The Transition fit is a combination between the Clearance and Interference Fit. Depending on the actual dimension of the shaft and bore, it is possible that either could occur. This fit is best used when a shaft must be held in a precise location. If interference should occur, it will not be to the extent where disassembly is overly difficult. Misumi shafts and bores follow the JIS shaft fit tolerances. Selecting the proper tolerance is critical to achieve the desired fit between two mating components. This tolerance table can be found in the ‘Technical Reference’ section in each catalog. The columns represent the tolerance grade; while the rows are organized by dimeter ranges. Finding where the two intersect will indicate the corresponding tolerance range. If we look at a 10mm shaft with an h6 tolerance (10h6), we can see the expected tolerance is no larger than the basic size, but is capable of being 11microns under 10mm. This brings the expected minimum to 9.989, and the maximum to 10.000mm. Misumi offers a useful table [Fig. 2.2] to help you choose the appropriate tolerance combination is your application. If we would like this 10h6 shaft to exhibit a clearance fit, we can see each tolerance class that would satisfy this condition. Now that we’re familiar with shaft selection, join us next episode where we will take a look at linear shaft applications and related alterations! ================================= Subscribe to our channel: http://bit.ly/Us2mJ6 BLOG: http://blog.misumiusa.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/usa_misumi Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/misumiusa/ G+: http://bit.ly/1nQPnvV FB: https://www.facebook.com/misumi.usa LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/misumi SHAFT TOLERANCES & FITS | MECH MINUTES | MISUMI USA

Hawkins v. McGee Summary | quimbee.com
An animated case brief of Hawkins v. McGee, 84 N.H. 114, 146 A. 641 (N.H. 1929). Read the text case brief at https://www.quimbee.com/cases/hawkins-v-mcgee. McGee (defendant), a surgeon, performed a procedure on Hawkins (plaintiff) designed to remove scar tissue from Hawkins’ hand and replace it with a skin graft from Hawkins’ chest. When asked by Hawkins and his father for more information about the operation, McGee allegedly said that he guaranteed to make a “one hundred percent good” hand. Hawkins and his father agreed to the operation, but it was performed unsuccessfully. Because McGee had grafted skin from Hawkins's chest, the graft caused thick hair to grow on Hawkins's palm. Hawkins brought suit against McGee on the ground that McGee violated an alleged warranty for the success of the operation. The trial court instructed the jury that if it found Hawkins was entitled to relief, it should award him damages based on his pain and suffering from the operation, as well as the additional ill effects he suffered from the operation beyond his existing injury. The jury awarded damages to Hawkins, but McGee moved to set aside the verdict because it was excessive. The trial court agreed with McGee and said that if Hawkins did not return the damages awarded above $500, the verdict would be set aside. Hawkins refused and the trial court set aside the verdict. Hawkins appealed. Hawkins v. McGee, also known as the Hairy Hand case, is one of the most widely known cases on damages in contract law and was made famous in the classic film The Paper Chase. Reflection of lightDefinition: When light ray strikes the boundary of two media such as air and glass, a part of light is turned back into the same medium. This is called reflection of light.A highly polished surface, such as a mirror, reflects most of the light falling on it.Laws of reflection: 1.The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection, and 2.The incident ray, the normal to the mirror at the point of incidence and the reflected ray, all lie in the same plane. These laws are applicable to all types of reflecting surfaces including spherical surfaces.Types of reflection: The types of reflection are regular reflection and irregular or diffused reflection.Regularreflection.It occurs when a beam of light falls on a smooth and polished surface such as a plane mirror. Irregular reflection. It occurs when a beam of light falls on a rough surface such as wall of a room.Incident ray:Light ray striking a reflecting surfacePoints of incidence:The point at which the incident ray strikes the reflecting surface.Reflectedray:The light ray obtained after reflection from the surface, in the same medium in which the.incident ray is travelling. Normal:The perpendicular drawn to the surface at the point of incidence. Angle of incidence:The angle which the incident ray makes with the normal at the point of incidence. It is denoted by the letter i.Angle of reflection:The angle which the reflected ray makes with the normal at the point of incidence. It is denoted by the letter r.Plane of incidence:The plane containing the incident ray and the normal.
