Uranium ore can also be recovered by the in-situ recovery (ISR) method, given appropriate geological conditions. The ISR method is applicable only to sandstone-hosted uranium deposits located below the water table in a confined aquifer. ISR is a method that leaves the uranium orebody in the ground. The uranium is dissolved in either sulfuric acid or a mildly alkaline solution that is injected into and recovered from the aquifer by means of wells. Uranium is a natural element with an average concentration of 2.8 parts per million on the Earth’s crust. It is more abundant than gold, silver or mercury, approximately the same as tin as and slightly less abundant than cobalt or lead. Similar to in situ mining, heap leach mining differs in that it places ore on a liner, then adds the chemicals via drip systems to the ore, whereas in situ mining lacks these liners and pulls pregnant solution up to obtain the minerals. Most mining companies, favor the economic feasibility of the heap leaching, considering that heap leaching is a better alternative to conventional processing (such as flotation, agitation, and vat leaching). Additionally, dump leaching is an essential part of most copper mining operations and along with other deterministic factors, determines the quality grade of the produced material. Due to the effect that the dump leaching has, i.e. it can contribute substantially to the economic viability of the mining process it is advantageous to include the results of the leaching operation in the economic overall project evaluation. This, in effect, requires that the key controllable variables, which have an effect on the recovery of the metal and the quality of solution coming from a dump leaching process. The process has ancient origins; one of the classical methods for the manufacture of copperas (iron sulfate) was to heap up iron pyrite and collect the leachate from the heap, which was then boiled with iron to produce iron(II) sulfate

In this video, uranium is concentrated from its ore through a series of precipitations, which eventually yields a form of yellowcake, uranyl peroxide. Please remember to take proper precautions when working with a radioactive heavy metal such as uranium and its salts. Gloves, eye protection, and a dust mask are necessary. For processing, uranium ore is dissolved into hydrochloric acid, oxidized with bleach, precipitated with ammonia, filtered, leached with carbonate, filtered, neutralized with hydrochloric acid, precipitated with hydrogen peroxide, and filtered. The uranium produced by this procedure could in no way be considered weapons-grade or enriched. The enrichment process requires millions of dollars in investment and is impossible for any entity short of a national government to produce. This uranium maintains the isotopic ratio found within the earth's crust and is actually less radioactive than the ore from which it was processed due to the absence of more radioactive decay products of uranium, such as radium, protactinium, and other unstable nuclei produced by the spontaneous fission of U238. Though ore chemistry varies by locality, this process is generalized for any uranium on an acid-soluble matrix. The result is polluted rivers, lakes, and aquifers, with no safe available drinking water for thousands of communities. At the recent 2015 PDAC conference in Toronto, Resource Investing News had the chance to catch up with Stephen Twyerould, president and CEO of Excelsior Mining (TSXV:MIN). Excelsior is currently developing the Gunnison project, an in-situ recovery copper project in Arizona, and was recently named a TSX Venture 50 company for 2015. Twyerould spoke about what's led to Excelsior's success so far, suggesting that Excelsior's solid management team and project have allowed the company to attract capital in an otherwise difficult market. In terms of what the company has planned for this year, Twyerould stated that he's most looking forward to the technical work that Excelsior has lined up for Gunnison. Additionally, the CEO took some time to talk about in-situ mining in general, pointing out two key considerations for investors when looking at such projects. First, he noted that in-situ recovery projects often come with a much lower environmental impact than other types of mining projects. "The remediation and reclamation process is outstanding," he said, "we can leave that site the way we found it, and that's hard to do in mining." He also stated that in-situ projects often garner lower operating and capital costs, a key benefit for companies aiming to get to production in difficult markets or low price environments. When asked about environmental concerns and opposition, Twyerould stressed that in-situ mining for copper is very different from uranium in-situ mining, and stated that Excelsior is working closely with the community near Gunnison to ensure those living nearby are comfortable with the project.
