Karangahake Gorge is a great place to take the family for a hike, cycle or a swim during the summer. There are a number of different trails that you can explore the main one being the Gold mine windows, which provide an amazing view over the river. The cycle trail is well established and caters primarily for the casual enthusiast over the advanced cyclist. Although you can visit these mines all year round, it's best to visit them during New Zealand's summer (Dec - Mar). The music I use: http://www.epidemicsound.com

Karangahaki Gorge Windows walk

Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway (Windows walk) There is a newer version of this video available with better footage of the mining tunnels https://youtu.be/mrR6IbOs6Hg We have visited the gorge a number of times now, we've seen it calm, we've seen it rough, we've seen it dry and we've seen it wet, but besides all the dramatic views, there is one special event that will always stay with me, at first I thought we have done something wrong but then... Karangahake Gorge lies between the Coromandel and Kaimai ranges, State Highway 2, the main link between the Waikato region and the Bay of Plenty passes through this gorge, you'le find it just a few kilometers after the town of Paeroa, home of L&P, arguably New Zealand's favourite beverage. Voted as one of the 101 Must Do's for Kiwis, the "Windows Walk" is a loop walk that leads through the old gold mining tunnels and I do recommended a flash light to navagate through them, the ‘windows’ of the walk are four open holes which look down on the spectacular river gorge far below, these were once used to tip tailings into the Waitawheta Gorge below. The path follows the route of a bush tramway and many ruins and old mining equipment can be seen with sections that looks like a scenes out of Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider. It's a very easy walk which includes 3 suspension bridges which can be aquard walking accross and keeping your balance... The loop takes you through a 1,100m old railway tunnel which is is fairly well lit. Karangahake Gorge - Kiwi Explorers

03:18
This walkway features historic railway remains in a stunning natural gorge setting, including two steel truss bridges and a 1 km rail tunnel, and provide access to the relics of historic gold mining. The walkway follows the railway line through the gorge and then opens out alongside the Ohinemuri River, passing through the huge Victoria Battery complex and terminating at the Waikino Station where a cafe and train rides can be investigated. A shorter loop section can be walked, that includes both the bridges and the 1100 m railway tunnel at Karangahake. The walkway can be described in two sections. Rail Tunnel Loop Time: 45 min return Distance: 2.5 km Starting at Karangahake Hall, walk through the foundations of the Crown Battery before climbing up onto the Western Portal Bridge over the river. The 1100 m former rail tunnel, which is well lit, leads from the end of this bridge and emerges at the Eastern Portal Bridge which takes you back over the Ohinemuri River. From here there is a choice of completing the loop back to Karangahake, by walking downstream along the river, or you can choose to continue on the Historic Walkway by going upstream towards Waikino. Historic Walkway to Waikino Time: 4 hr return Distance: 4.3 km At the Eastern Portal Bridge go upstream, following the bends in the river along the line of the railway. It is about an hour's walk before you reach Owharoa Falls and the entrance to the Victoria Battery. Victoria Battery is a destination in its own right, but a short walk through the remains, following the railway line, leads you to an underpass which provides access to the Waikino Station. Return the same way or have your friends pick you up! Victoria Battery Site Erected in 1897 to crush quartz, the Victoria Battery was considered the largest and most advanced facility of its type in New Zealand. Today, a short walk from the Waikino Station Café takes you to the Victoria Battery site, which has interesting on-site information. The Victoria Battery Tramway Society also offers guided tours on a narrow gauge mining tramway and tours of the Victoria Battery’s ore kilns. Getting there Park by the Karangahake Hall, or in the Karangahake Domain Car Park on SH2 between Paeroa and Waihi, at the base of the Coromandel Range. Karangahake is about 130 km drive from Auckland, or 60 km from Hamilton. Mountain biking The ride includes some narrow, winding sections where cyclists are asked to dismount in certain sections (check for signage). The tunnel does have some lighting, however a bike light or torch is recommended. This is a shared-use track. Follow the mountain bikers code: respect others, respect the rules, respect the track. Know before you go A torch is advisable for exploring the old rail and mining tunnels at Karangahake.

Kawarau Gorge Gold Fields Mining Exhibit Highway 8b NEW ZEALAND SOUTH ISLAND

03:06
QUEENSTOWN The Kawarau River gorge with its steep hills and rapidly flowing river is exceptionally scenic and we made many stops to take photographs. We stopped at a tourist site outlining the gold mining history on this river. Gold was discovered on the Shotover River in 1862, and it became the second richest gold-bearing river in the world. Makeshift towns of tents, stores, bars and grog shops sprang up almost overnight, establishing not only Queenstown, but also Arrowtown, 21 kilometres to the north east beside the Arrow River, and many other small encampments

Gold Mine Exploring at Karangahake

01:43
Jumping off the Kiwi Bus our first stop of the day was the old gold mines at Karangahake. The landscape was full of adits and tram ways from when once the mine was operational. The walk had been nicely set up and very easy to follow. Crossing over the two bridges and following the tram ways past adits. Even the rails are still down for most of the walk. Walking towards the gorge the path enters the mountain. The tunnel cuts through the side of the cliff, with little Windows onto the gorge below. Continue following the path through tunnels until you reach the steps down to another bridge. When we where there the other section of the walk was closed, because of a landslide.

Gold prospecting in Coromandel Forest Park

01:24
In the Parakiwai Valley of Coromandel Forest Park, gold prospecting is closing conservation land and destroying the habitat of Archey's frogs. Local guide Clive Duxfield showed Forest & Bird Regional Manager Rebecca Stirnemann through the valley, and discovered fresh damage from prospecting sites. The area is known habitat for the citically endangered Archey's frog, and even with the best efforts at mitigation, there is going to be an impact on them. These frogs are more precious than any gold. The Government should be protecting the remaining places where they live, not allowing gold mining to destroy this specially protected conservation land. Learn more about these frogs and their valley in the Spring issue of Forest & Bird magazine, in letterboxes this week. Join Forest & Bird to get your copy: http://www.forestandbird.org.nz/joinus

A walk around the Karangahake gorge with the boys

22:33
Last school holidays I took the boys and a couple of there mates down to Miranda for a few days - with the Karangahake gorge near by I took the boys for a walk around the old gold mine ruins and a few of the mines themselves. It's a great place to take family for the day with 3-4 different walks available to do, with the Windows walk being the better. It was a lot of fun and the boys thoroughly enjoyed it even if getting wet from the rain, it just added to the adventure. It also walks along the Ohinemuri river which you can swim in over the summer.

Karangahake Gorge

09:16
Vic took Annita and I to Karangahake Gorge. It's an old gold mine built in the late 1800's and early 1900's. There are a lot of the foundations that were poured for the buildings still there. They also cut a tunnel through the mountain to run the train through that is now a foot path. It's really very interesting!

Community Protest: Protect Karangahake from Mining

01:15
Community members are protesting renewed mining efforts from New Talasman Gold in the Karangahake Gorge. Forest & Bird’s Regional Manager Rebecca Stirnemann, joined protesters there in July 2017. Karangahake is a recreation area for locals and tourists. A popular walking and cycling route is now closed for the mining operation. The area also has enormous cultural importance to tangata whenua, and sits in a valuable ecological corridor of recovering forest. It's another example of public conservation land that’s up for grabs. Watch our video and support the protection of Karangahake. https://protectkarangahake.org.nz/

Day trips from Auckland - Karangahake Gorge

01:48
Karangaheke gorge is located at the base of the Coromandel Pensinsula, about a 1.5 hour drive from Auckland. There are plenty of great walks in the area, but from my point of view the Windows walk is the very best. From here you get framed views into the mining sites and the sparkling river below. There are even some glowworms, so keep an eye out for them. You can observe the relics of the many processes that took place in extracting gold - from the tunnels where rock was extracted, to the roasting pits where the rock was broken down, and the huge stamper battery processing plant. The Talisman battery, built in the 1890s was huge in its day, with 50 stampers crushing rock. Another popular option is the historic walkway. It follows the historic Paeroa to Waihi railway. In the stunning natural gorge setting many old mine buildings and machinery can be seen. Where the gorge opens up you will find the huge Victoria Battery. It was erected in 1897 to crush quartz and was considered the largest and most advanced facility of its type in New Zealand. To continue the loop you will get a chance to walk through the 1 km long tunnel that was once used for mining processes. Upon finishing this walk you will pass the Crown Battery site, which was constructed in 1892 and accommodates 60 stampers for crushing quartz There are many more walking and mountain biking tracks, but if you are short in time these are my recommendations. Best place to stay when you visit Auckland: https://goo.gl/8G7BgW Stay tuned in for more great day trips from Auckland and subscribe to my channel! https://goo.gl/Lp2q7A
