Australia's biodiversity: mining

06:13
Mining occurs throughout Australia, but its direct impacts on biodiversity are relatively limited compared with other major land uses because the areas affected are generally small. Dr Alan Andersen talks about the main impacts of mining on biodiversity and how these can be appropriately managed through processes like strategic regional assessments, use of bioindicators in rehabilitation, and biodiversity offsets. beneath the surface COMMUNITY SOLUTIONS FOR THE GLOBAL MINING THREAT Project Vision: Preventing Human Rights Abuses Related to Mining The objective of this multi-‐year project is to build a multimedia toolkit that educates, empowers, and connects communities impacted by extractive industries. The toolkit aims to stop human rights abuses before they occur and to put communities in a strong position to protect their rights and fight for justice. The project uses videos to share stories and practical advice from communities already impacted by mining with communities where mining will soon occur. These stories will form the foundation of a video toolkit that provides communities with strategies and techniques for protecting their rights, and inspires them to action. Cutting Edge Tools for Community Organizations All videos will be published with a facilitator’s guide to help maximize the impact of video screenings and support communities in taking meaningful action. Videos will be distributed on DVDs, USBs, and online, along with links to relevant guides and further information on key topics and strategies covered in the videos. Key partners will also be provided with projection equipment and hands-‐on training to launch their grassroots distribution program. Video Collection: Year 1 ● The Impacts of Mining (Peru, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe) ● Baseline Data and Environmental Monitoring (Nigeria) ● Community Mapping and Resistance to Mining (Ghana) ● Building a Resistance Movement (Peru, forthcoming) ● Negotiating for Environmental Protections (Bolivia, forthcoming) ● Resettlement and Relocation (Zimbabwe, forthcoming) Iteration & Year 2 The second phase of our project emphasizes distribution, feedback, and iteration. We will hold special screenings with target audiences in Haiti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and other countries where mining poses an imminent threat. We are also seeking feedback from experts and practitioners on how to improve the content, and our distribution and implementation strategy. Get Involved! If you’re interested in collaborating on the project, hosting a screening, or providing advice or feedback, please contact Jessie Landerman at [email protected]

What is a Natural Gold Mine?

03:17
You want everyone to just do what they say they will. Like you do. You want others to deliver on time which means before the deadline. You want people who show up prepared. People who take responsibility for their actions and the impact of those actions on others. What if you could get your team together to develop together? And what if that session was transformative? What if people opened up and created new ways of doing things? What if everyone got more done with less effort. Since 1989, leaders and teams have been creating new ways of working so they achieve more. Instead of just learning, they implement what they learn. Sound good? It is. It's off to work I go! (audience laughing) I love to work! I love to work! Hi ho, hi ho, hi ho, hi ho!" Primary Gold Mines are 1 in 2 of the Canadian population. Think about gold. Gold is pure. We measure the purity of gold - 99.9% pure. Gold is valuable. Any organization wants to have gold. Gold is the standard. The Gold Seal. The Gold Standard. When something's done really well we put a Gold Stamp on it. We are people who pride ourselves in doing things right. We are people who pride ourselves in making sure that we follow all the rules, all the instructions and do things appropriately. We are detail-oriented. We see the value of the details. Because you can have a great initial meeting and then make three promises and not follow through and a Gold Mine is going to go, "I don't trust...No." Step away from the people who will not follow through. We call it a "Say Do Gap”. What you say you do...and what you do. And if there's a gap between the two - our alarm bells go off. So get for a moment now, that your flippant conversations like, "I'll send that over to you this afternoon" and you send it next Tuesday? YOU may think it doesn't matter because it's not relevant to the buying process...We do. The mines. So when you work in the mine, it's hard work, isn't it? Like we are people who are not afraid of hard work. There's a reason why all that earth-moving equipment is gold in color - because we do it. If work has to be done, we're the people you want to have on your team because we get 'er done. And it doesn't matter how much work it is we get it done. We enjoy being behind the scenes. We don't want to be front and center. We don't want the spotlight on us. [peaking out from behind screen] Oh, they're still here. (audience laughing)

This One Video Holds A Key To Western Australia's Future Economic Success

01:25
We get it. Mineral royalties isn't the most exciting topic of conversation. And yet it has a huge impact across Western Australia, on more people than you might imagine. Miners pay a royalty to the State to remove minerals from the ground. The rate varies depending on the mineral, but there's no doubt an increase would substantially impact gold miners, potentially putting some out of business. This would affect local communities, families and businesses, increase unemployment, and reduce the money the State receives. In this video we explain how the royalty is worked out, why an increase would be detrimental to gold mining and the countless communities and industries that depend on it, and why gold miners in particular are doing it tough. We know this isn’t the world’s most exciting issue – but it’s of vital importance to the continuing economic success of Western Australia. Please watch and share to help others understand the impact of a gold royalty rise.

Exposing The Inhumane Conditions Of Burkina Faso's Gold Mines

29:23
Gold Dust: Under Blaise Compaore's leadership, Burkina Faso's unregulated gold rush has had a devastating effect on mining conditions. This report digs deep into the industry, exposing the corruption beneath Compaore's ruling. Millions of people - including children as young as fourteen - mine in an unregulated industry for a few golden grams of hope. Marcel toils underground to support his family - but without the glittering rewards promised. “We all have hope, we hope to earn” he says, but "they rob us here...They treat the miner like an animal." 17-year old Soumaele has been mining for two years. His thin body can go to even deeper than the older men, to places where the air is impossible to breathe and the tunnels are likely to collapse. Gold promises a great deal, but in an anarchic industry, teacher Soungalo Hema fears for the future of children like Soumaele: "You try and save them", she says, "but a lot of the time it’s in vain. I ask myself 'what will happen to all of us?'" Desperate men and children scour underwater mine-shafts in this terrifying report. Breathing through nothing more than a thin pipe connected to an air compressor, going 30 foot deep underwater for hours in search of gold is all in a day’s work for 16-year-old Gerald. "I'm afraid, if the earth collapses, I will get buried underneath" says the teenager. Surrounded by rock walls in the pitch black darkness of the water, the men chip away at walls for 3 hours. They find no gold. For many like Gerald school is a distant memory, and illegally diving for gold the only alternative to starvation. Hundreds of deaths by electrocution, drowning and even the possibility of Mercury poisoning have had little impact on compressor mining activities, which continue un-policed and unregulated. There appears little hope of change on the horizon. "If I could only give job opportunities - I will take them away from compressor mining. It is just that I have no alternative at this point" says Ricarte Padilla, Mayor of Jose Panganiban - Philippines' so-called "Gold Coast". As it is, the children and family men unearthing 60-80kg of gold per month see the lions share of wealth disappear into the Chinese black market. Impact Minerals will be sampling at new Blackridge Gold Project 'almost straight away'

06:11
Impact Minerals Ltd (ASX:IPT) managing director Dr. Mike Jones speaks to Proactive Investors about the acquisition of a mining lease at the Blackridge Gold Project in central Queensland. The explorer recently completed the sale of another earlier stage gold project in Western Australia's Pilbara region. "The mining lease is fully granted, and we're going to be in a position to be able to get onto the ground almost straight away and commence some very large sampling programs. That's very important for us because we've seen from all the activity in the Pilbara - and the work of Novo Resources in particular with the massive discovery up there - that bulk sampling is the key to being able to define resources with these styles of deposits," explains Jones. Jones is a geologist specialised in conglomerate-hosted gold, having completed his PhD studying this style of mineralisation.

South Africa Gold Mining Could Decline Precipitately | Rick Rule

15:16
https://sdbullion.com http://www.silverdoctors.com/precious-metals-market-podcast/ Gold mining equities have been strong amid downward pressure in the precious metal markets. Hope regarding further mergers and acquisitions has had a positive effect on the miners. Political uncertainties in South Africa may have an impact on gold production there. If political uncertainties remain, Rule's suspicion is that gold production there will fall precipitately over the next five years. Issues in Mexico are concerning as well with regard to mining. However, Rule says this doesn’t mean people shouldn’t invest in miners there.

Kenya Miners Part 2: Crushing, grinding the ore, and sluicing gold the traditional African way

08:07
This is our second video in our five part series of our trip to Kenya to install a shaker table to help eliminate the use of mercury by the smalls scale gold miners. We met with Julius who is the president of the MICA gold mining cooperative and donated a shaker table to MICA to show the miners a different technology for gold concentration other than the use of mercury. Once the shaker table was set up the miners were amazed! The shaker table on average recovered 2-3 times more gold from the same material they had been processing with their blanket/burlap sluices and mercury use. The table can also process the material up to 10 times faster than the blanket/burlap sluices. The result being in some cases 30 times more gold for the miners in the same amount of processing time. Stay tuned for more videos of our trip to Kenya. For more information about our shaker table or any of our other products email us at [email protected] or give us a call at 360-595-4445. http://www.mbmmllc.com

Our Houses Are Our Gold - Shut Down Mintails Mining Operation.

15:23
A community populated by people who mostly survive on indigent grants fights the open cast mining practices of Australian owned Mining Operation - Mintails - which is doing unrestrained blasting only 150 meters away from their homes. This community say that a process of public participation was not engaged in and they were not consulted by government officials or company officials about the open cast mining and blasting. They simply heard blasts and sustained structural damage to their homes. Now the community are demanding that the mining operation close down completely as they see no solution to this destruction of their homes and impact on their health. They are not impressed with the court interdict obtained by Mogale City to close the mine while further inspections are done - calling this a smokescreen to destract from obvious irregularities in the granting of the mining license by both government officials and Mintails They have repeatedly requested a copy of the Environmental Impact Assessment - but this has been refused on the grounds that this is ..... The struggle against this dangerous and destructive mining operation continues and the community want the truth to be revealed and those involved in the irregularities to be arrested and they want the mine shut down with immediate affect.
