The Secret World Of Gold | Gold Mining - Geographic History

42:41
The Secret World Of Gold | Gold Mining - Geographic History. It is impossible to know the exact date that humans first began to mine gold, but some of the oldest known gold artifacts were found in the Varna Necropolis in Bulgaria. The graves of the necropolis were built between 4700 and 4200 BC, indicating that gold mining could be at least 7000 years old. A group of German and Georgian archaeologists claims the Sakdrisi site in southern Georgia, dating to the 3rd or 4th millennium BC, may be the world's oldest known gold mine. Philippines: Two Tons Of Platinum Discovered - 1995

01:44
English/Nat Government officials in the Philippines have uncovered two tons of platinum worth around 26 (m)million US dollars. The hoard is believed to be part of a massive amount of treasure stolen by a Japanese general in World War Two. For decades, treasure hunters have searched for riches rumoured abandoned by retreating Japanese forces at the end of World War II. Now their quest seems to have been vindicated - with the discovery of the supposed Yamashita treasure. According to financial experts, the two-foot, bell-shaped lump of platinum - a metal more valuable than gold - would bring about 26 (m) million dollars on international markets. Tomoyuki Yamashita was the commander of Japanese forces in the Philippines towards the end of World War Two. He was rumoured to have gathered a huge amount of treasure which was buried in 170 locations in the Philippines. Known as the "Tiger of Malaya", he was executed for war crimes in 1946 and treasure seekers have been looking ever since. Government agents seized the platinum Sunday from a villager in Lallo, 250 miles north-east of Manila. Apparently a Japanese treasure hunter found the platinum in 1993 in the sea off Cagayan province, and gave it to the villager for safekeeping. But on his return the villager refused to give it back - so the treasure hunter reported the find to the authorities who have now claimed the precious metal. There is no certainty the treasure is part of the Yamashita hoard but the agent in charge of the operation believes the rumours to be true. SOUNDBITE: Allegedly, the informant in the case was the a son of a Japanese general, during World War Two, and before his father died, he was informed that there were hidden treasures of this kind in the place and he was provided with the necessary map in locating the treasure. SUPER CAPTION: Vincento de Guzman, National Bureau of Investigation By law, such treasures are considered government property. But according to officials, the unfortunate finder will be given a substantial share of the proceeds from its sale. Geode hunting in my yard.

09:18
I got a creek that washes the gravel. And it is easy to look through the rocks and find geodes. I haven't found and arrow heads yet but I keep on looking. It is a great place to get away. Ive been hunting geodes for 34 years. I use to only pick up the big ones till I got serious and started looking for them. I wasn't really looking for them and I would keep 3 or 4 a year. Big ones. Very peaceful.Yet I don't have a cell phone yet. But I carry my camera every where I know they will require one some day like a personal tracking device. Never use a selfy for a password. Never. Desert of the Skeletons. Diamond Mines | Tribes - Planet Doc Full Documentaries

SUBSCRIBE! http://bit.ly/PlanetDoc Full Documentaries every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday! Documentary "Desert of Skeletons" http://bit.ly/DocDesert Documentary "Desert of the Skeletons. Diamond Mines" The Skeleton Coast marks the limit of a desert which covers a narrow strip, no wider than 200 kilometres, running from southern Angola to the Orange river, the border with South Africa. Like a coastal belt, the dunes and rocks of the Namib desert cover 250,000 square kilometres along more than 2,000 kilometres of the Atlantic coast of Namibia. From the air, this mass of orange-coloured sand seems endless. These are the tallest dunes in the world, and below them lies the world's largest diamond deposit. It is a fantastic sight, which could only have been created by nature. But every year, there is a veritable explosion of life along the Skeleton Coast. In October, the sea-lions come to these coasts to give birth. At this time of year, Cape Cross is home to the largest colony of sea-lions over one hundred thousand of them. Outside the breeding season, males of the species are rarely seen they start to arrive at the end of October, in order to mark out their territory. The first European to set foot on this coast was the Portuguese, Diego Cao, in 1486. A year later, another Portuguese navigator, Bartolomé Días, with his three ships, sailed into the bay, seeking protection from a storm. After many attempts, he finally managed to land, and named the bay 'Angra Pequena' (small cove)*. But it was not until 1883 that the first stable settlement was established, when the German navigator and merchant, Adolf Lüderitz, reached an agreement with the head of one of the Nama tribes. Lüderitz bought the bay for a relative small amount of money and sixty rifles, in order to set up a whale processing plant here. A few months later, Kanzler Bismark declared Namibia a protectorate of the German Empire. In 1904, war broke out between the Nama and the Germans, and Lüderitz became the first prisoner of war. But the real industrial and economic boom came later, with the discovery of the diamond mines. In just four years, the town was transformed from a small, remote fishing port, into one of the most important cities in Southern Africa. Pride Of Philippines || Great Philippine Eagle

07:48
The Philippine eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi), also known as the monkey-eating eagle or great Philippine eagle, is an eagle of the family Accipitridae endemic to forests in the Philippines. It has brown and white-colored plumage, and a shaggy crest, and generally measures 86 to 102 cm (2.82 to 3.35 ft) in length and weighs 4.7 to 8.0 kg (10.4 to 17.6 lb). It is considered the largest of the extant eagles in the world in terms of length and wing surface, with Steller's sea eagle and the harpy eagle being larger in terms of weight and bulk. The level of sexual dimorphism in size is not certain, but the male is believed to be typically about 10% smaller than the female. The Philippine eagle has a wingspan of 184 to 220 cm (6 ft 0 in to 7 ft 3 in) and a wing chord length of 57.4–61.4 cm (22.6–24.2 in). Evolution in the Philippine islands, without other predators, made the eagles the dominant hunter in the Philippine forests. Among the rarest and most powerful birds in the world, it has been declared the Philippine national bird. It is critically endangered, mainly due to massive loss of habitat resulting from deforestation in most of its range. Killing a Philippine eagle is punishable under Philippine law up to 12 years in prison and heavy fines. The first European to study the species was the English explorer and naturalist John Whitehead in 1896, who observed the bird and whose servant, Juan, collected the first specimen a few weeks later. Upon its scientific discovery, the Philippine eagle was first called the monkey-eating eagle because of reports from natives of Bonga, Samar, where the species was first discovered, that it preyed exclusively on monkeys. Later studies revealed, however, that the alleged monkey-eating eagle also ate other animals, such as colugos, civets, large snakes, monitor lizards, and even large birds, such as hornbills. This species has no recognized subspecies. Its nearest relatives are snake eagles (Circaetinae), such as the bateleur. The Philippine eagle's nape is adorned with long, brown feathers that form a shaggy, manelike crest. The most frequently heard noises made by the Philippine eagle are loud, high-pitched whistles ending with inflections in pitch. The Philippine eagle is endemic to the Philippines and can be found on four major islands: eastern Luzon, Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao. The largest numbers of eagles reside on Mindanao, with between 82 and 233 breeding pairs. Each breeding pair requires a large home range (around 133 km2) to successfully raise a chick, thus the species is extremely vulnerable to deforestation. The species' flight is fast and agile, resembling the smaller hawks more than similar large birds of prey. Life expectancy for a wild eagle is estimated to be from 30 to 60 years. The complete breeding cycle of the Philippine eagle lasts two years. Like most eagles, the Philippine eagle is monogamous. Once paired, a couple remains together for the rest of their lives. The female typically lays one egg. If an egg fails to hatch or the chick dies early, the parents likely lay another egg the following year. The egg is incubated for 58 to 68 days. Both sexes participate in the incubation and both sexes help feed the newly hatched eaglet. In 2010, the IUCN and BirdLife International listed this species as critically endangered. In 2015, about 600 were estimated to be left in the wild. They are threatened primarily by deforestation through logging and expanding agriculture. Old-growth forest is being lost at a high rate, and most of the forest in the lowlands is owned by logging companies. Mining, pollution, exposure to pesticides that affect breeding and poaching are also major threats. Additionally, they are occasionally caught in traps laid by local people for deer. The Philippine eagle was officially declared the national bird of the Philippines on 4 July 1995. The Philippine eagle has been featured on at least 12 stamps from the Philippines, with dates ranging from 1967 to 2007. It was also depicted on the 50-centavo coins minted from 1981 to 1994. The Philippine Eagle Foundation in Davao City, is one organization dedicated to the protection and conservation of the Philippine eagle and its forest habitat. The Philippine Eagle Foundation has successfully bred Philippine eagles in captivity for over a decade and conducted the first experimental release of a captive-bred eagle to the wild. The foundation has 36 eagles at its center, of which 19 were bred in captivity, including one born in 2015, the first for two years Song: Yuku - Yukowla (Vlog No Copyright Music) Music provided by Vlog No Copyright Music. Nova: The Lost Tribe - Full 1993 Tasaday Documentary

56:33
This is the entire original NOVA broadcast from 1993 in one video. Tasaday declared genuine. From WikiPilipinas: http://en.wikipilipinas.org/index.php?title=Tasaday While scholars debated, the hoax claims were also being challenged outside science|scientific circles. In 1987, the Philippine Congress held a four-month-long public investigation into the hoax claims, during which Elizalde arranged for a Tasaday woman to be present to support the original claims. The investigation concluded in favor of the original claims and denounced the possibility of a hoax. In 1988, President Corazon Aquino also conducted an inquiry and announced that the Tasaday were genuine and had nearly been victimized by unscrupulous scholars and businessmen who wanted their logging|timber- and mining|mineral-rich land. After the investigations, the Philippine National Museumand other official organizations began listing the Tasaday among the Philippines' indigenous people. The Tasaday are a small group of indigenous people from the tropical rain forests of South Cotabato in Mindanao who allegedly lived a Stone Age life. Throughout the 1970s the Tasaday received world-wide fame, and then again in the 1980s when Oswald Iten purportedly discovered that they were a hoax masterminded government officials close to President Ferdinand E. Marcos. Up until the mid twentieth century, the Tasaday as of 1971 could recall historical contact with two other local groups (known to the Tasaday as the Sandukasand the Tasafangs), apparently with similar lifeways to the Tasaday and also from the forest. Contact with the modern world (e.g. metal, cloth and cultivated foods) was not known to the 1970s Tasaday until the mid-20th century (exact date unknown, possibly the 1950s), when they met and began sporadically trading with Dafal, an itinerant member of various Philippine tribes including the Manobo Blit, Ubu and T'boli. (Note that these peoples, generally living outside the forest, were known to and at least somewhat familiar with the modern world at this time.) It is noteworthy, and helpful in comprehending the Tasaday's long-standing isolation, that many tribal peoples of Mindanao avoid the deep forest due to superstitions or beliefs. MERMAID CORPSE WASHES UP ON BEACH

02:26
Billschannel viewer Caveguy 22 sent me this video clip of a mermaid that the video claims was found on the beach. Cavegus said, “I’ve seen this thingy around and would like to know if it is real or fake? I took a long look at the video. It starts out on a beach with lots of white sand, wanders around for awhile, then comes across a washed up mermaid corpse in the mangroves. It then lingers over the mermaid, taking a variety of shots to show us all the details… the back, the skin, the head, the hair and even the face. Caveguy, I don’t have to do a lot of work on this one because guess what… I already explained this one in another video of mine. In that video, I revealed that what we aere looking at is actually a hoax - It was made to help promote the work of a taxidermist from Tampa, Florida - called Juan Cabana. It was all part of a hoax to help him sell his creation on ebay… which he got 1500 for… Now let’s see is this video real, or fake… let me think. Ok, I’m going to call it fake. Hey if you have a picture or some video that you not sure weather it is real or not, send it over to me aT BILLSCHANNEL @Gmail.com or my Facebook, Facebook.com/billschannel

OEMF2015 - Day 1- Dr Alice Gorman - Dust mitigation in lunar mining & cultural heritage implications

19:18
For more info on the 2nd Off Earth Mining Forum see http://www.acser.unsw.edu.au/oemf2015 - Dust mitigation in lunar mining and the implications for cultural heritage management Lunar mining may be feasible within a couple of decades, and will pose new threats to the survival of heritage places on the Moon. These include the Luna, Ranger, Surveyor and Apollo mission landing sites, as well as more recent places such as the Chang-e/Yutu landscape. In an industrial context, the magnitude of potential damage will be much greater than during the small-scale scientific exploration of the Moon to date. A serious problem is likely to be abrasion from the movement of lunar dust. Lunar dust is electrostatically charged, highly adhesive and contains a large proportion of sharp silicate glasses. In low lunar gravity, rocket exhaust can cause it to reach escape velocity. NASA’s 2011 lunar heritage guidelines present a starting point for minimising dust stirred up by rocket exhaust and surface vehicle movement through the creation of buffer zones around heritage sites. In this paper I review the evidence for dust impacts on human materials from sources such as Surveyor III, reflectance studies of blast zones, and experiments with lunar analogues. Dust has been recognised as a major impediment to surface operations, and there are a number of proposals to counteract its deleterious effects. Dust mitigation will provide practical benefits for both mining and heritage. Dr Alice Gorman is an internationally recognised leader in the emerging field of space archaeology. Her research on space exploration has been featured in National Geographic, the Monocle, New Scientist, Financial Review and Archaeology magazine. She is a senior lecturer in the Department of Archaeology at Flinders University, a faculty member of the International Space University's Space Program in Adelaide and a member of the Executive Council of the Space Industry Association of Australia. Most Amazing Open-pit Mines in The World (diamonds, gold, silver, copper...) [igeoNews]

03:44
Contribute to the Project: http://igeo.tv/contribuye-al-proyecto/ The Bingham Canyon Mine, also known as the Kennecott Copper Mine, is an open-pit mining operation extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, in the Oquirrh Mountains. The mine is owned by Rio Tinto Group, an international mining and exploration company headquartered in the United Kingdom. The copper operations at Bingham Canyon Mine are managed through Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation which operates the mine, a concentrator plant, a smelter, and a refinery. The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 0.6 miles (0.97 km) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and covering 1,900 acres (770 ha). It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 under the name Bingham Canyon Open Pit Copper Mine. The mine experienced a massive landslide in April of 2013 and a smaller slide in September of 2013. Udachnaya was discovered on June 15, 1955, just two days after the discovery of the diamond pipe Mir by Soviet geologist Vladimir Shchukin and his team. It is more than 600 metres (1,970 ft) deep, making it the third deepest open-pit mine in the world (after Bingham Canyon Mine and Chuquicamata). The nearby settlement of Udachny is named for the deposit. As of 2010, Udachnaya pipe is controlled by Russian diamond company Alrosa, which planned to halt open-pit mining in favor of underground mining in 2010. The mine has estimated reserves of 225.8 million carats of diamonds and an annual production capacity of 10.4 million carats Chuquicamata, or "Chuqui" as it is more familiarly known, is by excavated volume the biggest open pit copper mine in the world, located in the north of Chile, just outside of Calama, 215 km northeast of Antofagasta and 1,240 km north of the capital, Santiago. The mine is owned and operated by Codelco, a Chilean state enterprise, since the Chilean nationalization of copper in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Its depth of 850 metres (2,790 ft) makes it the second deepest open-pit mine in the world (after Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, USA). The Diavik Diamond Mine is a diamond mine in the North Slave Region of the Northwest Territories, Canada, about 300 kilometres (190 mi) north of Yellowknife. It has become an important part of the regional economy, employing 700, grossing C$100 million in sales, and producing approximately 7.5 million carats (1,500 kg (3,300 lb)) of diamonds annually.[2] The area was surveyed in 1992 and construction began in 2001, with production commencing in January 2003. It is connected by an ice road and Diavik Airport with a 5,235 ft (1,596 m) gravel runway regularly accommodating Boeing 737 jet aircraft. The Grasberg Mine is the largest gold mine and the third largest copper mine in the world. It is located in the province of Papua in Indonesia near Puncak Jaya, the highest mountain in Papua, and it has 19,500 employees. It is majority owned through a subsidiary by Freeport-McMoRan, which owns 90.64% of PT Freeport Indonesia, the principal operating subsidiary in Indonesia, including 9.36% owned through its wholly owned subsidiary, PT Indocopper Investama. The Government of Indonesia owns the remaining 9.36% of PT Freeport Indonesia. FCX operates under an agreement with the Government of Indonesia, which allows Freeport to conduct exploration, mining and production activities in a 24,700-acre area (Block A). It also conducts exploration activities in an approximate 500,000-acre area (Block B). All of Freeport's proven and probable mineral reserves and current mining operations are located in Block A. The 2006 production was 610,800 tonnes of copper; 58,474,392 grams of gold; and 174,458,971 grams of silver.
