Sam Broom of Sprott Global Offers His 2019 Resource Sector Outlook

20:33
Sam Broom joined Sprott Global in early 2016 having spent his early career working as an engineering geologist in the consulting industry, both in his native New Zealand and in Australia. During his time in Australia, Sam became heavily involved in the mining industry and gained extensive experience across a wide range of industry sub-sectors. Also during this period, he gained a passion for both the natural resources industries and the markets that support them. His investment philosophy focuses on combining a sound understanding of industry and company-specific fundamentals with technical analysis to fine-tune the timing of investment decisions in order to maximize portfolio returns. Sam received his B.S. in Honors Geology from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. In this interview, Sam offers his take on how the mining sector performed in 2018 and provides his outlook for 2019. Sam discusses why the Aussie mid-cap producers outperformed their North American counterparts last year and whether they might do so again in 2019. He explains why he is very bullish on the industrial commodities and provides his commentary on the Newmont-Goldcorp merger. Sam also shares regarding how he is currently advising his clients to position their resource portfolios. 0:05 Introduction 1:50 Thoughts on how the mining investment sector performed in 2018 4:18 Why the Aussie mid-cap miners outperformed their North American counterparts in 2018 6:47 Resource sector outlook for 2019 12:40 Sam’s current advice to his clients on how to invest in the mining sector right now 14:53 Thoughts on the Newmont-Goldcorp merger 17:18 Final thoughts on the Australian mining sector Sign up for our free newsletter and receive interview transcripts, stock profiles and investment ideas: http://eepurl.com/cHxJ39 The content found on MiningStockEducation.com is for informational purposes only and is not to be considered personal legal or investment advice or a recommendation to buy or sell securities or any other product. Big Data: The Canadian Opportunity

03:46
How can Canada excel in big data? This animated video considers how Canada’s primary industries — mining, energy, forestry and agriculture — can foster economic growth in Canada’s data-driven economy. Primary industries have invested more than $50 billion in “simple” sensors installed in machinery across the country. While these sensors are important to the operation of the machinery, they do not provide robust data sets for machine learning analysis. With quality data, Canadians could discover new opportunities to lower costs, reduce environmental impacts — including waste, emissions and land disturbances — and improve overall performance. Providing quality sensor data to start-ups and big data entrepreneurs through a national open-source library could enable the next generation of Canadians to develop large-scale, big data-based businesses poised to unlock the next “big idea” for Canada.

WHAT YOU DO: Use computer simulations to look at how the Earth's surface moves over time, compare this with information from satellites to better understand the earthquake cycle, and use it to create disaster response products and plans. EDUCATION: Depending on whether you want to teach at a college, go into industry, or work for a research lab, your educational path will be slightly different. Start with an undergraduate degree, usually in Earth Science; you'll need at least a master's degree if you want to teach, and to be a tenured professor at a research institution, a PhD. Strong background in math, physics, Earth science, and solid mechanics is also important. USEFUL SKILLS: Computer programming, writing (for writing grant proposals), communication, and leadership skills. How to get in: Working in labs as a student, publishing papers (as a part of a professor's or student's research team), and going to scientific meetings to network are all ways to get yourself out there and meet people that can help you. If you're interested in research, you'll need your name on as many publications as possible by the time you start looking for a job. CAREER PATH: In industry or a research lab, getting an internship while in school then pursuing a job at any lab or related company will get your foot in the door. In academic positions, you'll start out as a researcher with some teaching responsibilities; after years of research and experience, you can become a professor with full tenure. PAYBACK: For an academic researcher with a master's degree and 3-5 years of experience, the average salary is about $69,000. With a PhD, you'll make more. If you work in industry, you can work with a bachelor's or a master's and make anywhere from $40,000-$50,000, depending on degree and experience. DOWNSIDES: Securing funding can be a challenge. You spend a good part of your time writing proposals to make sure that your research is paid for, so that you can continue working on what you love. FUTURE OF JOB: Teaching positions at universities are becoming increasingly competitive, as are positions at research labs. Jobs in industry (oil, mining, geotechnical) vary, depending on the market, but can also be competitive depending on the economy and region. NETWORKING: Professional Societies: American Geophysical Union Seismological Society of America Geological Society of America Other Resources: Southern California Earthquake Center (has student internships and other educational resources) Jet Propulsion Laboratory (look on Education page, has lots of resources) NASA (education page has resources) US Geological Survey (has a bunch of educational resources) Earth Science departments at universities/colleges Produced, shot and edited for the National Science Foundation by instructors from the Gigniks program. -Ali Sanford (LACES 12th grade)

Making Mining Work for Zambia: Economic, Health, & Environmental Nexus of the Copper Mining Economy

03:54
Zambia's rich mineral resources are one of the country's most important assets. They contribute to national income, exports, employment and government revenue. As the country looks to the future, Zambia faces important choices on how to manage its mineral wealth. There are trade-offs in the design of the mining fiscal regime. Mining inevitably entails environmental and public health risks. Mining firms make choices about procurement that influences the industry's contribution to the Zambian economy. This brief video introduces the World Bank's Fifth Zambia Economic Brief "Making Mining Work for Zambia: The Economic, Health, and Environmental Nexus of Zambia's Copper Mining Economy," which was released in June 2015. It asks how Zambia can uses its mineral resources to help the country achieve its economic development ambitions. The report suggests areas where the government, business community, and civil society can collaborate to enhance the contribution of mining to Zambia.

What does PETROLEUM ENGINEERING mean? PETROLEUM ENGINEERING meaning. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Petroleum engineering is a field of engineering concerned with the activities related to the production of hydrocarbons, which can be either crude oil or natural gas. Exploration and Production are deemed to fall within the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry. Exploration, by earth scientists, and petroleum engineering are the oil and gas industry's two main subsurface disciplines, which focus on maximizing economic recovery of hydrocarbons from subsurface reservoirs. Petroleum geology and geophysics focus on provision of a static description of the hydrocarbon reservoir rock, while petroleum engineering focuses on estimation of the recoverable volume of this resource using a detailed understanding of the physical behavior of oil, water and gas within porous rock at very high pressure. The combined efforts of geologists and petroleum engineers throughout the life of a hydrocarbon accumulation determine the way in which a reservoir is developed and depleted, and usually they have the highest impact on field economics. Petroleum engineering requires a good knowledge of many other related disciplines, such as geophysics, petroleum geology, formation evaluation (well logging), drilling, economics, reservoir simulation, reservoir engineering, well engineering, artificial lift systems, completions and oil and gas facilities engineering. Recruitment to the industry has historically been from the disciplines of physics, chemical engineering and mining engineering. Subsequent development training has usually been done within oil companies. The profession got its start in 1914 within the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). The first Petroleum Engineering degree was conferred in 1915 by the University of Pittsburgh. Since then, the profession has evolved to solve increasingly difficult situations, as much of the "low hanging fruit" of the world's oil fields have been found and depleted. Improvements in computer modeling, materials and the application of statistics, probability analysis, and new technologies like horizontal drilling and enhanced oil recovery, have drastically improved the toolbox of the petroleum engineer in recent decades. Deep-water, arctic and desert conditions are usually contended with. High Temperature and High Pressure (HTHP) environments have become increasingly commonplace in operations and require the petroleum engineer to be savvy in topics as wide ranging as thermo-hydraulics, geomechanics, and intelligent systems. The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is the largest professional society for petroleum engineers and publishes much information concerning the industry. Petroleum engineering education is available at 17 universities in the United States and many more throughout the world - primarily in oil producing regions - and some oil companies have considerable in-house petroleum engineering training classes. Petroleum engineering has historically been one of the highest paid engineering disciplines, although there is a tendency for mass layoffs when oil prices decline. In a June 4, 2007 article, Forbes.com reported that petroleum engineering was the 24th best paying job in the United States. The 2010 National Association of Colleges and Employers survey showed petroleum engineers as the highest paid 2010 graduates at an average $125,220 annual salary. For individuals with experience, salaries can go from $170,000 to $260,000 annually. They make an average of $112,000 a year and about $53.75 per hour.

The 5 Best New Jobs In 2017

01:58
For an entire time period, a single job can sometimes serve as a watermark. For instance, the Renaissance certainly wouldn’t exist without its artists and the Industrial Revolution certainly wouldn’t exist without its coal miners. In another fifty years, people won’t be talking about artists or coal miners, but the everyday people who are working to shape our future today. Now, as culture and priorities are evolving, new jobs are constantly created to reflect what’s important in 2017. Although not very common, Stimulate Astronaut is a recently created job with a goal of answering the single question: is a Mars mission humane? Funded by NASA and run by the University of Hawai’i, the HI-SEAS mission takes trained professionals to a Mars simulation on the slopes of a Hawaiian volcano for months at a time. The longest HI-SEAS mission lasted for a year. The crew lives in a 1,200-square-foot dome that is perched on an old rock quarry comparable to the geology of Mars. During their mission, the crew works on a number of projects including designing space suits and observing plant growth. New simulated space travelers will continue this work in attempts to discover if a Mars mission is in fact humane or not. Joe Mazumdar on What to Look For When Investing in Mining Stocks

06:27
Economic geologist and mining analyst Joe Mazumdar, who recently joined Brent Cook at Exploration Insights, stopped by to chat with the Investing News Network about the mining space and what to look for when assessing potential investments. Formerly a senior mining analyst at Canaccord Genuity and Haywood Securities, Mazumdar's opinions are certainly worth paying attention to. On the junior side of things, Mazumdar stressed that it's important to pay attention to how well the geology of a project has been mapped out. "Geology's really basic, and if you don't have that right, it's hard to get anything else right," he said. Other highlights from our conversation included: Mazumdar's thoughts on the recent troubles faced by Rubicon Minerals's (TSX:RMX) Phoenix project, how common such issues are, and what investors can take away from the story A few red flags for investors to watch out for when evaluating potential investments in mining companies or junior mining stocks Why he likes Claude Resources (TSX:CRJ) and Lake Shore Gold (TSX:LSG) What he hopes to see in the junior resource sector in 2016 Watch the video to hear what he had to say.

Janet Mining GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF DIAMOND

00:10
Janet Mining GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF DIAMOND The diamond mining industry is one of the mainstays of Sierra Leone’s economy. In 1968 diamonds accounted for 62% of the total value of exports. For 1969 the percentage will probably be higher, judging from the monthly purchases by the Government diamond Office which buys nearly all of the diamonds produced under the Alluvial diamond Mining Scheme. Because of the prominence of diamond mining in Sierra Leone, this Bulletin, which represents the outcome of seven years extensive fieldwork by the author, is of major importance. In it Mr. Hall gives a comprehensive review of the history of diamond mining in Sierra Leone and also of mining practice, in addition to a detail account of the geology and geomorphology of the diamond fields. It should be noted that the opinions expressed in this Bulletin are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of the Director of Geological Survey. http://tuckerjanetmining.com

Abandoned Silver Mine

07:10
Today I went back to my old stomping grounds. I spent many hours as a kid on these shores exploring the caves, beaches, and sea stacks...I cooked some cod tongues and had some coffee... An interesting man-made feature of the Arch Rock Geological Hiking Trail is an abandoned silver mine (Pay Point Mine). This mine was active in the early 1900's. At present the shaft is not easily accessible. However, it is possible to build infrastructure to allow safe and easy access to this interesting feature. The remnant of the ore vein is still visible providing both a point of interest and teaching potential...
