Loudon Wainwright (Earl Scruggs) - The Swimming Song (Lyrics)
This version of The Swimming Song is from The Earl Scruggs Review album. Loudon sings lead, but the banjo is 3-finger banjo played by Earl. Lyrics This summer I went swimming This summer I might have drowned But I held my breath, I kicked my feet Moved my arms around I moved my arms around This summer I swam in the ocean And I swam in a swimming pool Salt my wounds, chlorined my eyes I'm a self-destructive fool Self-destructive fool This summer I did the back stroke And you know that that's not all I did the breast stroke, the butterfly And the old Australian crawl The old Australian crawl This summer I swam in a public place And a reservoir to boot At the latter I was informal At the former I wore my suit I wore my swimming suit Oh, this summer I did swan dives And jack-knives for you all And once when you weren't looking I did a cannon-ball I did a cannon-ball This summer I went swimming This summer I might have drowned But I held my breath, I kicked my feet And moved my arms around I moved my arms around

I'm On My Way to Canaan's Land - Flatt and Scruggs
Flatt and Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys are my favorite Bluegrass group. This is a beautiful Bluegrass gospel song that features Earl Scruggs playing lead guitar instead of his usual 5 string. You can buy DVDs of their old Martha White Grand Ole Opry shows. There are currently 6 of them. Go to http://earlscruggs.com, click on Merchandise, and scroll down the list. I am not associated with the DVDs, Flatt and Scruggs, or that website, just a long-time huge fan.

RICKY SKAGGS & Earl Scruggs - Till the End of the World Rolls 'Round
Incredibly entertaining piece of music! My answer to "if you could have only one Bluegrass record in your collection, what would it be?" From Earl's 1983 "Top of the World" LP. Should have been a single release.

Leavin' by The Cripple Creek Band - Original Song
Leavin' is track 8 on The Cripple Creek Bands debut album. Written by Neal Morgan and Danny Morris (BMI/ASCAP). Available on iTunes, cdbaby.com, and Spotify. This is a sad song that anyone chasing a dream can relate to. It's about life on the road. It's about paying the costs associated with living that lifestyle. The lyrics paint a lonesome picture that all too many musicians have experienced.

Man of Constant Sorrow - The Stanley Brothers
The Stanley Brothers were a legendary American bluegrass duo made up of brothers Carter and Ralph Stanley. The Stanley's style can best be described as a traditional "mountain soul" sound that remained close to the Primitive Baptist vocal stylings they learned from their parents and others near their southwestern Virginia home. Ralph has often used the expression "...old-time, mountain style, what they call 'bluegrass' music", to differentiate the Stanley's sound from mainstream bluegrass. Ralph is still performing as of 2010. Among the musicians who have played in the revived Clinch Mountain Boys are Ricky Skaggs, Keith Whitley, Larry Sparks, Curly Ray Cline, Jack Cooke, Roy Lee Centers, Charlie Sizemore, Ray Goins, and Ralph Stanley II. Ralph's career received a big boost with his prominent role on the phenomenally successful soundtrack recording of the 2000 film, O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Flatt & Scruggs "Jackson"
Well, "Gombak Hillbillies" threw me a really hard bone of requests to chew, and after a few weeks of trying, I did manage to find one tune that they asked for, and it's this one! From the fine duo's 1966 "Town And Country" album. Enjoy!

Lights out, hands in, Fists up, we play to win! With angels at my back And the devil by my side Into the Darkness, we ride! Our fire is burning, but we're ever learning So many wish to snuff it out But with one stroke of lightning We're riot inciting We all turn our heads up and shout Lights out, hands in Fists up, we play to win! With angels at my back And the devil by my side Into the Darkness, we ride! I feel that this journey's last path on a gurney Will carry me straight to my grave And as strong as I'm standing They're always demanding That my soul's gone too far to save That's why we sing Oh, Oh Our fire this hour, it burns with the power That withstands a Hurricane gust With eyes full of wonder And Heads Like Thunder We turn all your ashes to dust Lights out, hands in Fists up, we play to win! With angels at my back And the devil by my side Into the Darkness, we ride! Into the Dark, we ride! © 2017 The Native Howl - Clean as Dirt Records
