Projectory Review - 19 September 2014
Well there’s nothing like business opportunities with major LNG projects to get the attention of industrial suppliers and service providers. A recent report on Projectory on the Award of a $170m contract for the offshore LNG Gorgon project attracted strong interest in the last fortnight. Downer EDI won a 12 month contract for work at the project on Barrow Island, with an option to extend the period. The contract is for miscellaneous works, and will create approximately 400 new jobs, predominately located on Barrow Island. The scope of the work encompasses: structural and piping erection; mechanical installations; electrical and instrumentation services; civil works; pre-commissioning; and commissioning/start-up assistance. While attention may have peaked on major projects in the West a report on Projectory on contract awarded for the construction of a $1bn Melbourne suburb also drew considerable attention. The contract has been awarded for the construction of a new Melbourne suburb that will provide 4,000 new homes and a waterfront town centre. Lend Lease will begin immediate construction of the $1 billion, 435ha Harpley project. Well back to WA and the award of a significant power supply contract in the Pilbara received much attention from Projectory subscribers. Horizon Power has signed a contract with APR Energy to deliver power to the Pilbara from four new turbines. The duel-fuel gas turbines are due to be installed at the South Hedland plant and producing power by October 2014. Horizon Power had a contract with Forge Group to supply generation for the Hedland Precinct Power Project (HPPP) but that contract was terminated in February this year when Forge became insolvent. Well back to the Eastern States where a contract awarded for a $580 million shopping centre expansion in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs attracted strong interest. Probuild has been selected as preferred contractor to construct the latest expansion of Chadstone Shopping Centre. The development will include the construction of 40 new retail spaces, a cinema complex, a 10-level office building and a hotel. In addition, 800 extra car park spaces and new transport links will be built. Well Queensland finally gets a look in with a recent announcement spruiking hundreds of new jobs in Bowen Basin from a $313m mine expansion. Cockatoo Coal recently announced its Baralaba Coal Expansion Project, 150km west of Rockhampton, would lift coal production from 1 million tonne per annum (mtpa) to 3.5 mtpa by 2016. As a result of the expansion, the resource producer will require more suppliers and employees. It will create 200 new jobs throughout the next two years. Cockatoo aims to employ locally across its project sites and, while staff numbers are at full capacity for now, the next round of recruitment will occur in 2015. Another Queensland project has drawn attention from the industrial supply and service community following announcement of a $440m infrastructure project to create 2500 jobs in southeast Queensland. Queensland Transport and Main Roads recently released details of the proposed Mooloolah River Interchange Upgrade on the Sunshine Coast. A key contact confirmed that developing planning was underway for a north-south transport corridor connecting Caloundra, Kawana, Mooloolaba and Maroochydore. For more information on these projects and plenty more including contact details for key project contacts and information on procurement protocols visit Projectory. Entries are also open for the inaugural Projectory Nova Awards recognising and rewarding outstanding individuals in the industrial supply and service sector involved in developing, maintaining and supporting sales and new business. For full details, visit the Events page on the Projectory website. Tickets are also selling fast for 2nd Annual Projectory-BIS Shrapnel Major Projects Outlook luncheon sponsored by Bid Write at the Novotel Sydney on Darling Harbour on Thursday 27 November.
