Search Engines and the PageRank Algorithm

11:25
What sets Google aside from other search engines is one of the methods it uses to determine where in its list of results it should include a web page when someone does a search. This method is known as the PageRank algorithm which rates every web page on a scale of 0 to 10. This video explains how the PageRank algorithm recursively propagates the importance of each web page through the link structure of the web. It begins by introducing Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founders of Google. It covers the importance of using Meta tags to include relevant keywords and descriptions in web pages before submitting them to a search engine for examination by a spider (web crawler). It also emphasises the importance of hyperlinks. This video describes how a web page obtains ‘link juice’ from incoming links, and how this link juice is shared among the other web pages that it links out to. With an example, this video demonstrates how the PageRank algorithm can be applied by first making a heuristic guess at any unknown PageRanks. The formula is then applied repeatedly until reliable values have been calculated. Finally, the video includes some tips on how you can boost the PageRank of pages in your own website.

Structured Data in Web Search by Alon Halevy of Google - Technion lecture

41:20
Structured Data in Web Search Lecture by Henry Taub Distinguished Visitor, Alon Halevy head of the Structured Data Management Research group at Google. For the first time since the emergence of the Web, structured data is playing a key role in search engines and is therefore being collected via a concerted effort. Much of this data is being extracted from the Web, which contains vast quantities of structured data on a variety of domains, such as hobbies, products and reference data. Moreover, the Web provides a platform that encourages publishing more data sets from governments and other public organizations. The Web also supports new data management opportunities, such as effective crisis response, data journalism and crowd-sourcing data sets. I will describe some of the efforts we are conducting at Google to collect structured data, filter the high-quality content, and serve it to our users. These efforts include providing Google Fusion Tables, a service for easily ingesting, visualizing and integrating data, mining the Web for high-quality HTML tables, and contributing these data assets to Google's other services.

How to Scrape Google Search Results Quickly, Easily and for Free

03:41
More here: http://www.gaintap.com/seo/scrape-google-search-links-for-free *UPDATE 6/30/2015 - Set your search results to 100 results instead of the default 20. This makes it WAY FASTER. Big thanks to "The 5 Dollar Website" for letting me know. In this video I cover how to scrape Google search results in a totally safe, non-black hat way. This uses the Google chrome extension called Linkclump and it's totally free. Scraping Google search results doesn't work well with automated web crawlers. If you're not using a proxy to mask your IP, you'll get yourself banned from Google pretty quickly. For that reason I don't mess around trying to scrape Google that way. This method of scraping Google pulls page titles and links. From there you can go on to process that data in interesting ways. I was able to pull 1,000 links in about 5 minutes sitting on my couch, watching TV. That's about 40 links every 5 seconds.

Katrina Riehl (Keynote): Memex: Mining the Dark Web

41:34
PyData NYC 2015 There is a lot of hype and speculation about the deep web. Whether focused on size or variety, there's one common theme ... opportunity. The intelligence gathering phase of any decision should not end at a Google search. Many companies are already tapping this wealth of data with open tools and practices. Coming from a background of tracking black markets on the web in the DARPA Memex program, we will show how to use tools that go beyond the surface web and pull out rich structured data to analyze. In this presentation, we'll dive into using our Python based open source tool stack for building an analytics search engine and utilizing the rest of the Python ecosystem for analysis. Google and CIA Internet Data Mining Project

02:36
Google Ventures, the investment arm of Google, has injected a sum of up to $10 million, as has In-Q-Tel -- which handles investments for the CIA and the wider intelligence network -- into a company called Recorded Future. The company describes its analytics as "the ultimate tool for open-source intelligence". Wired's defence analyst, Noah Schachtman, has a detailed report on the joint venture: "...it scours tens of thousands of websites, blogs and Twitter accounts to find the relationships between people, organizations, actions and incidents — both present and still-to-come. In a white paper, the company says its temporal analytics engine "goes beyond search" by "looking at the 'invisible links' between documents that talk about the same, or related, entities and events." The idea is to figure out for each incident who was involved, where it happened and when it might go down. Recorded Future then plots that chatter, showing online "momentum" for any given event." Recorded Future "continually scans thousands of news publications, blogs, niche sources, trade publications, government web sites, financial databases and more," according to it's portfolio. It sifts through millions of posts and conversations taking place on blogs, YouTube, Twitter and Amazon to "assemble actual real-time dossiers on people." It is also being integrated with Google Earth, which, as Schachtman points out in his piece, was seeded with In-Q-Tel/CIA investment. This integration will allow real time tracking of the locations of persons or groups as part of the overall intelligence dossier. Recorded Future takes in vast amounts of personal information such as employment changes, personal education and family relations. The video also shows categories covering pretty much everything else, including entertainment, music and movie releases, as well as other innocuous things like patent filings and product recalls.

Design@Large: Ranjitha Kumar: Design Mining the Web

56:18
Abstract: The billions of pages on the Web today provide an opportunity to understand design practice on a truly massive scale: each page comprises a concrete example of visual problem solving, creativity, and aesthetics. In recent years, data mining and knowledge discovery have revolutionized the Web, driving search engines and recommender systems that are used by millions of people every day. However, data mining traditionally focuses on the content of Web pages, ignoring how that content is presented. What can we learn from miningdesign? This talk presents design mining for the Web, and presents a scalable platform for Web design mining called Webzeitgeist. Webzeitgeist consists of a repository of pages processed into data structures that facilitate large-scale design knowledge extraction. With Webzeitgeist, users can find, understand, and leverage visual design data in Web applications. I will demonstrate how software tools built on top of Webzeitgeist can be used to dynamically curate design galleries, search for design alternatives, retarget content between page designs, and even predict the semantic role of page elements from design data. As more and more creative work is done digitally and shared in the cloud, Webzeitgeist provides a concrete illustration of how design mining principles can be applied to benefit content creators and consumers. A Search Engine Architecture Based on Collection Selection

33:01
Google Tech Talks December, 19 2007 ABSTRACT We present a distributed architecture for a Web search engine, based on the concept of collection selection. We introduce a novel approach to partition the collection of documents, able to greatly improve the effectiveness of standard collection selection techniques (CORI), and a new selection function outperforming the state of the art. Our technique is based on the novel query-vector (QV) document model, built from the analysis of query logs, and on our strategy of co-clustering queries and documents at the same time. By suitably partitioning the documents in the collection, our system is able to select the subset of servers containing the most relevant documents for each query. Instead of broadcasting the query to every server in the computing platform, only the most relevant will be polled, this way reducing the average computing cost to solve a query. We introduce a novel strategy to use the instant load at each server to drive the query routing. Also, we describe a new approach to caching, able to incrementally improve the quality of the stored results. Our caching strategy is effectively both in reducing computing load and in improving result quality. The proposed architecture, overall, presents a trade-off between computing cost and result quality, and we show how to guarantee very precise results in face of a dramatic reduction to computing load. This means that, with the same computing infrastructure, our system can serve more users, more queries and more documents. Speaker: Diego Puppin

Design and development of a content-based music search engine

01:01:36
If you go to Amazon.com or the Apple Itunes store, your ability to search for new music will largely be limited by the `query-by-metadata' paradigm: search by song, artist or album name. However, when we talk or write about music, we use a rich vocabulary of semantic concepts to convey our listening experience. If we can model a relationship between these concepts and the audio content, then we can produce a more flexible music search engine based on a 'query-by-semantic- description' paradigm. In this talk, I will present a computer audition system that can both annotate novel audio tracks with semantically meaningful words and retrieve relevant tracks from a database of unlabeled audio content given a text-base query. I consider the related tasks of content- based audio annotation and retrieval as one supervised multi-class, multi-label problem in which we model the joint probability of acoustic features and words. For each word in a vocabulary, we use an annotated corpus of songs to train a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) over an audio feature space. We estimate the parameters of the model using the weighted mixture hierarchies Expectation Maximization algorithm. This algorithm is more scalable to large data sets and produces better density estimates than standard parameter estimation techniques. The quality of the music annotations produced by our system is comparable with the performance of humans on the same task. Our `query-by-semantic-description' system can retrieve appropriate songs for a large number of musically relevant words. I also show that our audition system is general by learning a model that can annotate and retrieve sound effects. Lastly, I will discuss three techniques for collecting the semantic annotations of music that are needed to train such a computer audition system. They include text-mining web documents, conducting surveys, and deploying human computation games.

Search Engines & Your Privacy (3/5)

What data do search engines collect, and to what degree do they violate your privacy? Privacy advocate and expert Dr. Katherine Albrecht introduces us to a new search engine called Startpage and tells us what search engines should (and shouldn't) do. She is the author of Spychips, which explains how RFID technology tracks every move and purchase. Today, we have an opportunity to decide whether we will allow search engines to record our internet activity for data mining purposes. The time has come to move beyond Google's data mining grid. Tune in to find out how!
