Nikunj Oza: "Data-driven Anomaly Detection" | Talks at Google

53:03
This talk will describe recent work by the NASA Data Sciences Group on data-driven anomaly detection applied to air traffic control over Los Angeles, Denver, and New York. This data mining approach is designed to discover operationally significant flight anomalies, which were not pre-defined. These methods are complementary to traditional exceedance-based methods, in that they are more likely to yield false alarms, but they are also more likely to find previously-unknown anomalies. We discuss the discoveries that our algorithms have made that exceedance-based methods did not identify. Nikunj Oza is the leader of the Data Sciences Group at NASA Ames Research Center. He also leads a NASA project team which applies data mining to aviation safety. Dr. Ozaąs 40+ research papers represent his research interests which include data mining, machine learning, anomaly detection, and their applications to Aeronautics and Earth Science. He received the Arch T. Colwell Award for co-authoring one of the five most innovative technical papers selected from 3300+ SAE technical papers in 2005. His data mining team received the 2010 NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate Associate Administratorąs Award for best technology achievements by a team. He received his B.S. in Mathematics with Computer Science from MIT in 1994, and M.S. (in 1998) and Ph.D. (in 2001) in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley.

Become a Data Scientist in 3 months at Galvanize

02:21
Want the skills today's data scientists need to succeed? Learn from industry experts in machine learning, data science, deep learning, and more at Galvanize's 3-month program in Seattle, Denver, Austin, and San Francisco. Learn more and apply: http://galvanize.com/courses/data-science Video Transcript Ryan: Data science is a relatively new field. People always say it's you know it's either statistics, or machine learning, or computer science, and these have been around for a long time. But the thing that's special about it is how these concepts come together in industry. And largely it's about pulling out insights from your data and being able to build better products. Make better decisions, and largely build a better company through the use of this huge torrent of data. Katie: People in our program are coming from various backgrounds. That include engineering, analytics, and the quantitative sciences. Man 1: I've been a professional poker player since graduating college. Aznah: I was a PhD student in planetary science. Man 2: I was a professor before coming here. Conner: I worked on Barack Obama's reelection campaign. Man 3: Working as a software developer I had a very renew-ability seller. Dan: What really drove me to poker in the first place was that it was a problem to solve. Conner: I was using Excel and other tools like that, but I knew there was so much more out there. And I wanted to become a part of. Aznah: I was working with lots of data sets, but wanted to get into some real world problems. Conner: The days here are non-stop. We start in the morning with a mini quiz. Aznah: The afternoon pair exercises are sort of an exercise in collaboration as well as working through a problem. Conner: Steve Twa showed the coolest presentation where he was doing a live demo of playing songs on his violin, and putting out what song he was actually playing. And showing how machine learning could do that audio processing. So I was blown away by that. I actually really lucked out they connected me with Steve and he became my mentor. It was incredible to see how quickly we kind of all came together and were able to learn a ton of material in such a small amount of time. I could reach out to someone. Show someone my code and have that instant feedback. Aznah: Everybody is very supportive here. We've formed some really close friendships I think. Ryan: It's a network of hiring partners, and alumni, and data scientists throughout the field who really come together. And are helping shape and define what data science is, and what it means for the future. Aznah: My name is Aznah Azhari. Dan: I'm Dan Morris. Conner: My name is Conner Pinkston and I'm a data scientist.

Don’t miss the next DataEngConf in Barcelona: https://dataeng.co/2O0ZUq7 ABOUT THE DISCUSSION: As data is exploding the teams and job roles required to store, manage and analyze data are changing fast. What's the difference between a data scientist, a data engineer, a machine learning engineer and a data analyst? And at a higher level still, where do these roles fit in an organization? Different organizations have different views of their data-oriented job roles, and in this panel, we'll hear from an experts who have hands-on experience building out data teams at some extraordinary data-heavy organizations. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS: Guy Bayes is the Director of Data @Lyft. Previously he was Data Engineering Director & Head of Enterprise Business Intelligence at Facebook for 5+ years of extreme growth. He is a 20+ year expert in Big Data with a specialty in integrating big data tools and concepts such as Hadoop with traditional BI technologies and best practices. Over the past twenty years Guy has built advanced analytical systems for NBC and CBS, several major brokerages and worked on scientific data systems for a gigantic fusion laser built by The US Department of Energy at Lawrence Livermore National Labs. Jasmine is the Data Platform Lead at Clover Health where she is building a team to improve healthcare outcomes for the Medicare community via data analysis. Previously she worked as a Software Engineer at Change.org, and before that as an Analyst at UBS Investment Bank. Jasmine graduated with honors from the University of Pennsylvania. Luke DuBois, "Sex, Lies, and Data Mining"

01:08:37
R. Luke DuBois makes art using media and information as a material for making work that comments on the intersection of 21st century culture and our obsession with the quantification of our world. Working in a variety of media, DuBois focuses on the ways in which art can invoke the emotional, the speculative, and the big-picture narratives behind our century of data. DuBois holds a doctorate in music composition from Columbia University, and has lectured and taught worldwide on interactive sound and video performance. He has collaborated on interactive performance, installation, and music production work with many artists and organizations including Toni Dove, Todd Reynolds, Jamie Jewett, Bora Yoon, Michael Joaquin Grey, Matthew Ritchie, Elliott Sharp, Michael Gordon, Maya Lin, Bang on a Can, Engine 27, Harvestworks, and LEMUR, and was the director of the Princeton Laptop Orchestra for its 2007 season. Stemming from his investigations of “time-lapse phonography,” his work is a sonic and encyclopedic relative to time-lapse photography. Just as a long camera exposure fuses motion into a single image, his projects reveal the average sonority, visual language, and vocabulary in music, film, text, or cultural information. Exhibitions of his work include: the Insitut Valencià d’Art Modern, Spain; Haus der elektronischen Künste, Switzerland; 2008 Democratic National Convention, Denver; Weisman Art Museum, Minneapolis; San Jose Museum of Art; National Constitution Center, Philadelphia; Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art; Daelim Contemporary Art Museum, Seoul; 2007 Sundance Film Festival; the Sydney Film Festival; the Smithsonian American Art Museum; PROSPECT.2 New Orleans; and the Aspen Institute. DuBois’ work and writing has appeared in print and online in the New York Times, National Geographic, and Esquire Magazine, and he was an invited speaker at the 2016 TED Conference. A major survey of his work, NOW, received its premiere at the Ringling Museum of Art in 2014, with a catalogue published by Scala Art & Heritage Publishers. An active visual and musical collaborator, DuBois is the co-author of Jitter, a software suite for the real-time manipulation of matrix data developed by San Francisco-based software company Cycling’74. He appears on nearly twenty-five albums both individually and as part of the avant-garde electronic group The Freight Elevator Quartet. He currently performs as part of Bioluminescence, a duo with vocalist Lesley Flanigan that explores the modality of the human voice, and in Fair Use, a trio with Zach Layton and Matthew Ostrowski, that looks at our accelerating culture through elecronic performance and remixing of cinema. DuBois has lived for the last twenty-two years in New York City. He is the director of the Brooklyn Experimental Media Center at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, and is on the Board of Directors of the ISSUE Project Room. His records are available on Caipirinha/Sire, Liquid Sky, C74, and Cantaloupe Music. His artwork is represented by bitforms gallery in New York City. This event was sponsored by the Berkeley Center for New Media and the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation.

Michael Kim, David Miller, Justin Bare & Mark Monroy | This Could Be Big As our lives become more enmeshed in the digital playground, we reveal more information about ourselves than ever before in the history of mankind. Every online search, store purchase, Facebook post, Tweet or Foursquare check-in is creating a flood of data that, when organized and categorized and analyzed, reveals trends and habits about ourselves and society at large. In the last two years, humans have created 90% of all information ever created by our species. If our data output used to be a sprinkler, it is now a firehose that's only getting stronger, and it is revealing information about our relationships, health, and undiscovered trends in society that are just beginning to be understood. In his new book The Human Face of Big Data, author and photographer Rick Smolan and his partner Jennifer Erwitt use pictures, essays and startling facts to put our unprecedented output of information into perspective. Mr. Smolan sat down with us this week to discuss some of what he discovered and his findings are mind-blowing and illuminate the scope of information being put forth by people on a daily basis. To correspond with the release of the book, which went on sale December 4th, 2012, 10,000 copies were sent to some of world's most influential people including, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, UK Prime Minister David Cameron, Oprah Winfrey and Warren Buffett.

Creepy Abandoned Mining Hospital

38:53
While cruising through the Rocky Mountains, I stumbled on this group of mysterious abandoned houses that looked to date from the 1960s or '70s....one of which was full of the CREEPIEST rusty old abandoned medical furniture and equipment!! This was in an area of major mining activity in the 1800s, which was reclaimed/cleaned up sometime in the last 50 years...so maybe these buildings had something to do with mine cleanup, and the medical stuff was part of some old abandoned mining hospital. Who knows?! All I can say for sure is, it was CREEPY AS ALL GET-OUT! Of course near the end, I conjecture as to what exactly happened here....stay tuned til the end for the sad, sad tale of Little Jimmy Dickens, the mulleted, mustachioed Cadillac-driving loser who crashed his Brougham one snowy night coming over the pass from Durango!

(New Andreas Antonopoulos) Should we use banks for custodial cryptocurrency services?

18:54
What are the implications of blockchain projects that re-create the same financial systems of control that we currently have? Should we use banks for custodial cryptocurrency services? Are there benefits to permissioned, centralised blockchains for supply chain management, digital rights management (DRM), healthcare data, or tokens for senior citizens’ credit? Why is decentralisation of control and minimising trusted third parties in finance is more important? What should we learn from the demonetisation & Gresham's Law in India? Can we achieve our dreams without capitulating on principles? These questions are from the MOOC 9.6 session, the June monthly Patreon session, and part of the Denver talk, which took place on March 23rd, June 24th, and August 6th 2018 respectively. Andreas is a teaching fellow with the University of Nicosia. The first course in their Master of Science in Digital Currency degree, DFIN-511: Introduction to Digital Currencies, is offered for free as an open enrollment MOOC course to anyone interested in learning about the fundamental principles. Co-founded in 2012 by Debra Wilcox and Kenton Kuhn, the company has recently collaborated with the Colorado School of Mines to aid in 3D printing research and expose students to this growing form of manufacturing.
