Data-Ed Online: Emerging Trends in Data Jobs

01:36:48
Data is the lifeblood of just about every organization and functional area today. As businesses struggle to come to grips with the data flood, it is even more critical to focus on data as an asset that directly supports business imperatives as other organizational assets do. Organizations across most industries attempt to address data opportunities (e.g. Big Data) and data challenges (e.g. data quality) to enhance business unit performance. Unfortunately however, the results of these efforts frequently fall far below expectations due to haphazard approaches. Overall, poor organizational data management capabilities are the root cause of many of these failures. This webinar covers three lessons (illustrated by examples), which will help you to establish realistic OM plans and expectations, and help demonstrate the value of such actions to both internal and external decision makers. Takeaways: Organizational thinking must change: Value-added data management practices must be considered and included as a vital part of your business strategy. Walk before you run with data focused initiatives: Understand and implement necessary data management prerequisites as a foundation, then build upon that foundation. There are no silver bullets: Tools alone are not the answer. Specifying business requirements, business practices and data governance are almost always more important.

Twelve Emerging Trends in Data Analytics (part 1 of four)

04:28
Original blog post: http://sctr7.com/2014/07/09/twelve-emerging-trends-in-data-analytics-part-1-of-4/ Business analytics is a practitioner movement uniting several disciplines to drive value-creating decisions from data. Central disciplines include IT / computer science, statistics, data management, decision science, and scientific research methods. Descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive approaches are often used to categorize particular methodological approaches, themselves derived from the fields of business intelligence, financial forecasting and econometrics, and operations management, respectively. While speculative in nature, the intention is to raise consciousness concerning long-term trends for the sake of practitioners, particularly for planners concerned with long-term strategy. 1. Plumbers wanted: data management overhead demands professional data mungers 2. Hardening models: increasingly complex models require tighter approaches to diagnostics and validation 3. The tunnel link: big data engineering and methodological approaches meet in the middle

How to build a Text Mining Platform

01:09:52
Tiger Zhang & Lutz Finger on Text Mining Today more than ever before, we have access raw data in the form of texts. Businesses around the world store text discussions from their market research, customer care discussions, or brand relevant conversation on social media. While it is clear that texts contain valuable information, it is often less clear on how best texts can be analyzed at scale. In this class, we will share how we at LinkedIn built a scalable text-mining platform to uncover insights from text data. We will focus on two important components: THEME DISCOVERY of new content and how to CLASSIFY existing text. Using both features, we can detect emerging trends within reviews, customer care discussions and market research data. You will learn: THEME DISCOVERY - information extraction Theme recognition is a highly complex task due to the multi-facetted nature of our language. Theme Recognition (without requiring manual reviews) is, however, the main component of any text-mining platform. We will introduce an innovation in information extraction using part of speech tagging (currently patent pending) to uncover themes within textual data. TEXT CLASSIFICATIONS - Supervised Machine Learning Another important component of our NLP platform is the ability to classify text via supervised machine learning algorithms such as support vector machine (SVM). The ability to classify serves many business use-cases ranging from sentiment analytics to product identification. You will learn in our talk how to cater to those different requirements via a flexible platform setup. VALUE of DATA - Member Feedback The combined ability of Themes Discovery (new content and ideas) as well as Classifications (standard measure) creates a very effective framework to get business insights out of text data. We will demonstrate this on the use case of classifying and responding to member feedback.

The Economics of Data: Implications for the Data-driven Economy

02:37
History has taught us that a leap in innovation is central to economic transformation. Humanity has gone through several notable economic transformations driven by innovation, from the Gutenberg press and the printing revolution that followed, to the assembly line and the industrial revolution. Today, society is witnessing the emergence of the data-driven economy, and the industrialization of the very process of learning. Although the data-driven economy is the successor to economic transformations of the past, many facets of it are unlike anything humanity has witnessed before. In this video, CIGI Senior Fellow Dan Ciuriak explains that there are at least five important ways that the data-driven economy is different than economic frameworks of the past: asymmetries in access to data (the central feature of the data-driven economy), the role of machine learning, rapidly increasing market concentration, new forms of trade and exchange value, and a new degree of systemic risk. Coming to grips with these five features in a timely manner is of the utmost importance to policy makers across the globe.
CAREERS IN DATA ANALYTICS - Salary , Job Positions , Top Recruiters

12:34
CAREERS IN DATA ANALYTICS - Salary , Job Positions , Top Recruiters What IS DATA ANALYTICS? Data analytics (DA) is the process of examining data sets in order to draw conclusions about the information they contain, increasingly with the aid of specialized systems and software. Data analytics technologies and techniques are widely used in commercial industries to enable organizations to make more-informed business decisions and by scientists and researchers to verify or disprove scientific models, theories and hypotheses. As a term, data analytics predominantly refers to an assortment of applications, from basic business intelligence (BI), reporting and online analytical processing (OLAP) to various forms of advanced analytics. In that sense, it's similar in nature to business analytics, another umbrella term for approaches to analyzing data -- with the difference that the latter is oriented to business uses, while data analytics has a broader focus. The expansive view of the term isn't universal, though: In some cases, people use data analytics specifically to mean advanced analytics, treating BI as a separate category. Data analytics initiatives can help businesses increase revenues, improve operational efficiency, optimize marketing campaigns and customer service efforts, respond more quickly to emerging market trends and gain a competitive edge over rivals -- all with the ultimate goal of boosting business performance. Depending on the particular application, the data that's analyzed can consist of either historical records or new information that has been processed for real-time analytics uses. In addition, it can come from a mix of internal systems and external data sources. Types of data analytics applications : At a high level, data analytics methodologies include exploratory data analysis (EDA), which aims to find patterns and relationships in data, and confirmatory data analysis (CDA), which applies statistical techniques to determine whether hypotheses about a data set are true or false. EDA is often compared to detective work, while CDA is akin to the work of a judge or jury during a court trial -- a distinction first drawn by statistician John W. Tukey in his 1977 book Exploratory Data Analysis. Data analytics can also be separated into quantitative data analysis and qualitative data analysis. The former involves analysis of numerical data with quantifiable variables that can be compared or measured statistically. The qualitative approach is more interpretive -- it focuses on understanding the content of non-numerical data like text, images, audio and video, including common phrases, themes and points of view. At the application level, BI and reporting provides business executives and other corporate workers with actionable information about key performance indicators, business operations, customers and more. In the past, data queries and reports typically were created for end users by BI developers working in IT or for a centralized BI team; now, organizations increasingly use self-service BI tools that let execs, business analysts and operational workers run their own ad hoc queries and build reports themselves. Using Unstructured Text Data to Quantify Customer Perception

29:23
With the exponential growth of social media and new touchpoints, customers are interacting with brands and organizations at a much faster pace, generating volumes of unstructured data in the form of customer reviews, feedback, preferences, trends, etc. Other metadata such as demographic data, transaction data or point of sale data, when combined with unstructured data can help organizations better understand consumer behavior and market forces, at a much more granular and deeper level. This enables brands to make effective business decisions for profitable growth. In this webinar, attendees learned how unstructured data analytics adds value, reduces time and costs in the identification of key business problems, and helps organizations track the health of their brand image by monitoring emerging trends and identifying aspects of the business responsible for a particular customer sentiment. The webinar also covered and introduced our Unstructured Text Analytics Platform ("UTAP") which allows the automation of classification of unstructured text data to categories, enabling organizations to track customer categories/issues over a stipulated period of time, with faster and more efficient analysis of unstructured text data.

CITP Luncheon Speaker Series: Elana Zeide - Ethical Use of Big Data in Education

37:04
Education is increasingly big data-driven. Digitally-mediated education tools, social media data mining, and the Internet of Things generates a wealth of data about students’ actions both within and outside classrooms. Personalized learning platforms use detailed, real-time learner information to adjust instruction, assessment, and guidance automatically through adaptive structures and artificial intelligence. These algorithmic profiles can also serve as credentials in the place of traditional resumes and transcripts, and, in doing so, provide more access to better quality, lower-cost education and socioeconomic opportunity. This presentation examines the rise, promise, and perils of big data-driven education. New technologies and infrastructures may have unintended consequences that undermine the very goals reformers seek to achieve. As part of an emerging “scored society,” reliance on what I call “algorithmic credentials” also has important implications for society, the economy, and democracy. Bio: Elana Zeide is an associate research scholar at CITP, a visiting fellow at Yale Univeristy’s Information Society Project, an affiliate of New York University’s Information Law Institute and the Data & Society Research Institute, and an advisory board member of the Future of Privacy Forum. She works as attorney, scholar, and consultant focusing on student privacy, predictive analytics, and the proverbial permanent record in the age of big data. She examines the law, policies, and cultural norms emerging as education, and the rest of society, becomes increasingly data-driven. Zeide advises parents, educators, companies, and policymakers on student information practices in traditional schools, virtual learning environments, and the commercial sphere. She also writes for both popular and academic publications, recently including a discussion of algorithmic profiling on Slate, an article examining student privacy regulation in the Drexel Law Review, and a chapter on legal requirement and best practices in the forthcoming Handbook of Learning Analytics & Educational Data Mining. Zeide graduated from Yale University and New York University’s School of Law. She subsequently worked as a litigation associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLC, a legal analyst at Bloomberg L.P., and a visiting professor at Yale University, where she taught courses on Free Speech and the First Amendment before opening her own privacy and technology law practice. Prior to becoming an attorney, Zeide was a journalist and pop culture columnist in London and New York, and earned a Master of Fine Arts in Nonfiction Writing from Columbia University’s School of the Arts. She believes she is the only person to have both reported for and legally represented The National Enquirer.

Uncover Hidden Insights from Unstructured Data for Better Business Decisions

43:00

This video was recorded at FTC 2017 - http://saiconference.com/FTC Upcoming Conference: https://saiconference.com/FTC Abstract: The amount of information available on new tech-nologies has risen sharply in recent years. In turn, this has increased interest in automated tools to mine this information for useful insights into technology trends, with a particular focus on locating emerging, breakthrough technologies. This paper first outlines an automated framework for technology forecasting developed for the Department of Defense. It then proposes various enhancements to this framework, focusing in particular on utilizing social media data more effectively. Specific topics covered include technology forecasting via Twitter trusted sources and via identification of authoritative Twitter handles. Beyond improving the framework itself, the techniques described in this paper may also be of general interest to researchers using social media data, particularly for technology forecasting.
