Boy, 12, dies after basement collapses on him due to flash flood - 247 news
A 12-year-old boy died from injuries sustained when the basement of his home collapsed on him following damage from a flash flood. Thatcher Markham, 12, of Houghton, Michigan, was sleeping in the basement of his family's waterfront home when the basement collapsed on Sunday.His father, Rodney Markham, managed to dig him out of the debris and give him CPR before first responders arrived on scene early Monday morning. Because the flooding had washed out roads, a neighbor's boat had to be borrowed so that Thatcher could be taken to the Hancock boat launch, before being transported to a local hospital, The Daily Mining Gazette reported. Hospital workers were able to get Thatcher's pulse, after which he was airlifted to Motts Childrens' Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, about 550miles away. Thatcher was in serious condition and on life support Monday afternoon, but passed away at 11.40pm. Heavy rain battered the Upper Michigan area over the weekend, with Houghton County bearing the brunt of the water fall, receiving nearly seven inches of rain in some areas, ABC News reported. One of Thatcher's relatives started a GoFundMe page in response to members of the family's community asking how they could support the family. More than $80,700 has been donated from 1,038 people in the two days that the page has been active. The family had set a goal of $15,000.
