Male Feline Cryptorchidism and Castration
"A vet and another originally thought "V" was female as there were no testicles present. My human insisted that "V" was male. Months later, a single testicle began to descend. The other was fat and juicy and remained in the abdomen. The vet said it couldn't be functional, but he would remove it anyway. He doesn't know the passion and vitality of the Vajra Lineage. We're a fertile bunch! Good thing too: because it was still active and able to 'perform'. The vet executed a great surgery, removed each testicle. This presented a great educational opportunity. I asked my human to record it. So, for your education, I present: Venus' castration." – Vajra, Venus' grandmother. #Cryptorchidism #ProudOfMyGrandSon

Left testicle has descended into scrotal sack. Right testicle was found just inside the right inguinal canal. My personal video editing program was not performing properly so I resorted to using what appears to be a much better program; however, it is not activated as you can see.

Canine cryptorchid surgery
This is a true abdominal cryptorchid. This procedure utilizes a very small incision, smaller than a laprascopic cryptorchid surgery. Before surgery, make sure you are on the correct side by palpating the descended testicle and determining the side of origin for that one. The incision is made just perpendicular and lateral to the cranial portion of the penile sheath. Sharp dissection through the fascia and blunt through the muscle layers for almost no bleeding. Must be able to use a spay hook, just remember the developmental anatomy of the testicle and visualize where it came from and where it was going. It has to be in between. Email me for more details. ADULT CAT: single incision cat castrations (neuter) surgery technique
ADULT CAT NEUTER This is my soapbox topic - just like canine neuters, feline castrations should always be via a single skin incision over the median raphe - less bleeding (because of the less/nearly avascular raphe), less pain (not only because there is just one incision but because the raphe is also less innervated)...I never understood why we were taught to do 2 separate incisions!

Canine Cryptorchidism Explained by Doc Pawsitive
Doc Pawsitive takes a few moments to explain cryptorchidism in male dogs, also known as undescended testicle(s). The term cryptorchidism broken down simply means "crypto" or hidden with "orchid" or testicle. A cryptorchid dog has a hidden testicle, which is defined as a testicle that has not descended into the scrotum, the normal position for testes. This condition is more commonly seen in toy breed dogs such as Chihuahuas, Yorkshire Terriers, Maltese, Pomeranians and others. Cryptorchism is a heritable condition, meaning it can be passed down through generations and consequently cryptorchid dogs should never be bred. The majority of dogs should never be bred anyway, but the undescended testicle is prone to other problems in the long-term, including testicular cancer. In a normal male dog, the position of the scrotum below the body ensures the testicles are maintained at a lower temperature than normal canine body temperature. The lower scrotal temperature ensures the sperm viability for reproduction. Undescended testicles at higher than normal temperatures have a much higher incidence of testicular cancers or neoplasms. Studies show that over 50% of testicular Sertoli Cell tumors occur in cryptorchid dogs. The reason for this condition is simply a failure of the testicle to migrate to the normal position as puppies develop in-utero, or inside the mother. Embryologically the testes start out in nearly the same position as the ovaries in a female dog, however while the ovaries stay put, the testes migrate down through the abdomen headed for the scrotum. With cryptorchism, one or both of the testes fails to migrate the full path and reach the scrotum. Occassionally the testes may nearly reach the scrotum and can be felt in the groin area right next to the scrotum. Other times the testes remain intra-abdominal, or inside the abdomen. In the instances of intra-abdominal cryptorchids, the canine neuter surgery will be more expensive than a standard neuter because of the increase in surgical difficulty. An intra-abdominal cryptorchid neuter is actually more similar to a canine spay or ovariohysterectomy and consequently costs almost the same as having a female dog spayed.

Informed Consent regarding spaying or neutering your dog.

Post-spay complications - inflammation
The owner signs the "Informed consent form" which will state that the surgery may have post-op bleeding, pain or infection. In this case, there is post-op complication of stitch abscess or breakdown. The use of subcuticular sutures to close the skin is advised by vet surgery books and during surgery lectures in the vet school. After that, the skin is sutured with interrupted sutures as in this case done a vet. However, sometimes, the dog develops a swollen stitch inflammation area after spay. In this dog, the owner had to come back for me to check as I did not do the spay. Around 14 days (not one month as narrated in the video), the dog has a big swelling with stitches seen. This dog had a buried subcuticular stitch which I took out. I always spay dogs without using the subcuticular sutures. Just the skin sutures and very rarely do I get post-op complications. Some vets do use subcucticular sutures without skin sutures without any post-op inflammation. The dog owner is most impressed with "no stitches" seen after spay.

Warning! - Graphic! - Dog Neuter Abdomen Stitches - One Undescended Testicle (Cryptorchidism)
Our 16 month old 65lb English Cream Golden Retriever finally got neutered this week and his other testicle never dropped in to his scrotum. So the vet had to make an incision on his stomach and go find the smaller undescended testicle (the condition is known as cryptorchidism). The recovery time is about 10-14 days. He is on pain pills and anti-inflammatory drugs for the next 6 days. The surgery was about twice as expensive due to the undescended testicle. We also had his hips x-rayed while he was under anesthesia and the vet said his hip joints have "good coverage and he should have very little chance of ever developing hip dysplasia.

Please see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxIcwNsQUJ0 Cats Protection, the UK's leading feline welfare charity, champions neutering as the only effective way to reduce the number of unwanted cats in the UK. We recommend that pet cats are neutered at 4 months of age or younger, before they begin puberty, to prevent unplanned pregnancies. Cats in Cats Protection care may be neutered after first vaccination, if deemed suitable by a vet. Nine week old male and female kittens are neutered in this real time video and some details of the procedure are discussed.

Wally after his Cryptorchidism (Neuter) Surgery
Wally had to get Neutered because his testies did not descend properly after birth... as we knew Wally is a special dog... His neuter was a little more complex surgery due to this issue. Cryptorchidism is the absence of one or both testes from the scrotum. This usually represents failure of the testis to move, or "descend," during fetal development from an abdominal position, through the inguinal canal, into the ipsilateral scrotum. About 3% of full-term and 30% of premature infant boys are born with at least one undescended testis, making cryptorchidism the most common birth defect of male genitalia. However, most testes descend by the first year of life (the majority within three months), making the true incidence of cryptorchidism around 1% overall.

Post-surgery neuter instructions to the owner Pt 3
The Sheltie was neutered and during handover to the owner, I showed the owner that there was no post-surgery bleeding which is a complication of neuter in some dogs. Post-op care includes cleaning the wound with chlorhexidine 3 days post-op after removal of the plaster. In this dog, there was no pain complaint in the past 7 days post surgery. The dog recovered fully. Stitches will dissolve by themselves. No need to come back for stitch removal. 2/0 caprosyn (dissolvable monofilament) sutures were used.

Open covered/closed method of castration in dog by using three artery forceps technique
This is a video of open closed /covered method of castration by using three artery forceps technique. Covered means tunica vaginalis parietalis is not cut and testis is removed while it is attached or covered over the testis and spermatic cord. However, in this video, while exteriorization of right testis, tunica parietalis has cut unintentionally, but the concerned part has been removed i.e. transaction of spermatic cord along with tunics. Since transfixation has not done in this, so applied double ligature for each spermatic cord. In this skin suture could have been avoided; but in animal can not take chance therefore, applied skin suture.

White Lodge Veterinary Clinic: Canine Retained Testes
Cryptorchidism, sometimes called retained or undescended testes, is the absence of one or both testicles in the scrotum of a male puppy by the time it reaches 6 months of age. Testes normally descend within 6 to 8 weeks. However, they can remain in the abdomen or may never develop at all. Dogs with retained testicles have a greatly increased risk of developing testicular infection, torsion and cancer, for this reason, any affected dogs should be neutered.

THIS TECHNIQUE IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR STUDENTS OR FOR PEOPLE WITH NO EXPERIENCE WITH SPAYING! This video will show my normal procedure for spaying a female cat. With this technique you use the hook and the pedicle tie technique, so you don't have to make a big incision and it this way it saves you a lot of time. 2 Scrotal Castration ~ Adult Dog #1
Dr Mackie explains his personal Scrotal Castration incision technique, on a LARGE MALE DOG
Dog Cat Spay Neuter (Naperville IL, Woodridge IL, Bolingbrook IL, Plainfield IL) (630) 355-6164
(630) 355-6164 http://www.NapervilleVet.com Pet Spay Neuter is part of responsible pet ownership. Neutering may have many benefits including lower pet health care costs and reduced pet cancer risks. Hi, I am Dr. Fauley from the Care Animal Clinic, Naperville IL, 60565. In addition to my specialist of prolotherapy to treat arthritis in dogs, we offer state-of-the-art surgery. We are in the surgery room. I am going to talk about spaying and neutering our cats and dogs. We routinely perform spaying and neutering of companion animals and it is one of the important things that you can do as responsible animal owners. These two procedures are the most common surgical procedures done here and probably in veterinary medicine in general. We do them for the community clients in the area and for some of the humane society and animal welfare leagues as a responsible way of controlling the unwanted animal population in the neighborhood and regional areas. Spaying is for female dogs and cats. Technically, it is called ovarial hysterectomy where the ovaries as well as the uterus are removed. In male dogs and cats, it is called neutering in which the testicles are removed. Dog Spay Neuter Cat Spay Neuter Is A One Day Surgery. It is an In-and-Out-the-same-day here. You hold off food the night before and drop off the patient in the morning. We start the procedure by doing a pre-anesthetic bloodwork to make sure there is no problem in sedating the patient. After the patient is sedated in the prep area we bring it into the surgery room. This is a trough used for bigger dogs and cats. We lay your pet on it and cover it with a towel and a heating pad to make sure it stays warm. Dog Spay Neuter Cat Spay Neuter Uses Latest Technology. Your pet is monitored in a couple of different ways. An assistant is always present watching and adjusting the anesthesia machine. We also have this monitor that checks a number of different parameters. These are EKG leads. These are hooked up to the limbs so we can get a constant monitoring of the heart rate, beats and rhythm and know the condition of the heart while we perform the surgery. In case anything untoward happens, we are alerted immediately and are able to stay on top of the problem. This other wire is a temperature probe lead that we can attach to the body and thus are able to tell how warm the animal is. There is also an oxygen saturation monitor lead that attaches to this machine. It tells us how much oxygen is flowing through the animal's veins and artery walls while under sedation. We want to be sure the patient is breathing enough and that this machine is delivering enough oxygen while we perform the surgery. So, the pet is monitored. We have it on anesthesia. We use only the most advanced anesthesia and safest anesthesia. Once it is turned off, the animal simply wakes up right away. We feel we are able to control the depth of the anesthesia. Dog Spay Neuter Cat Spay Neuter Is Just The Start. We have ample supply of surgical instruments for surgeries other than routine spays and neuters such as abdominal surgery, pin broken legs, remove growths and tumors, repair injuries from fights or other trauma like tails getting caught in the door. These are the most common surgical procedures we do. The pet comes in, we perform the surgery and the pet goes home the same day. We always call the next day to follow up on the condition of the patient. Should any questions or concerns arise, we provide work and home telephone numbers you can call. After two (2) weeks, the pet is brought in and we remove the sutures. Generally, spays and neuters are performed on pets at six (6) months of age; but it can be done at any age. The sooner, the better. It is always the safest. In the meantime, if something else needs immediate attention, we will do what is necessary to take care of your pet.
