Up On Cripple Creek - The Band (The Band 5 of 10)

UP ON CRIPPLE CREEK The Band The Band (1970) When I get off of this mountain, you know where I want to go? Straight down the Mississippi river, to the Gulf of Mexico To Lake Charles, Louisiana, little Bessie, girl that I once knew She told me just to come on by, if there's anything she could do Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one Good luck had just stung me, to the race track I did go She bet on one horse to win and I bet on another to show The odds were in my favor, I had 'em five to one When that nag to win came around the track, sure enough she had won Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one I took up all of my winnings, and I gave my little Bessie half And she tore it up and threw it in my face, just for a laugh Now there's one thing in the whole wide world, I sure would like to see That's when that little love of mine, dips her doughnut in my tea Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one Now me and my mate were back at the shack, we had Spike Jones on the box She said, "I can't take the way he sings, but I love to hear him talk" Now that just gave my heart a throb, to the bottom of my feet And I swore and I took another pull, my Bessie can't be beat Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one Now there's a flood out in California and up north it's freezing cold And this living on the road is getting pretty old So I guess I'll call up my big mama, tell her I'll be rolling in But you know, deep down, I'm kind of tempted To go and see my Bessie again. Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one

The Band - Up on Cripple Creek

04:39
According to Wikipedia: "Up on Cripple Creek" is the fifth song on The Band's eponymous second album, The Band. It was released as a (edited) single on Capitol 2635 in November 1969 and reached #25 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Up on Cripple Creek" was written by Band guitarist and principal songwriter Robbie Robertson, with drummer Levon Helm singing lead vocal. A live performance of "Up on Cripple Creek" appears in The Band's live concert film The Last Waltz, as well as on the accompanying soundtrack album. In addition, a live version of the song appears on Before the Flood; a live album of The Band's various concerts and shows with Bob Dylan while touring together in 1974. "Up on Cripple Creek" is notable as it is one of the first accounts of a Hohner Clavinet being played with a wah-wah pedal. The riff can be heard after the chorus of the song. The Clavinet, especially in tandem with a wah pedal was a sound that became famous in the early to mid '70s especially in funk music, and continues to be popular to this day. Lyrics: When I get off of this mountain, you know where I want to go? Straight down the Mississippi river, to the Gulf of Mexico To Lake Charles, Louisiana, little Bessie-girl I once knew She told me just to come on by, if there's anything that she could do Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak, she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one Good luck had just stung me, to the race track I did go She bet on one horse to win and I bet on another to show The odds were in my favor, I had 'em five to one When that nag to win came around the track, sure enough we had won Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak, she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one I took up all of my winnings, and I gave my little Bessie half She tore it up and threw it in my face, just for a laugh Now there's one thing in the whole wide world, I sure would like to see That's when that little love of mine dips her doughnut in my tea Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak, she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one Now me and my mate were back at the shack, we had Spike Jones on the box She said, "I can't take the way he sings, but I love to hear him talk" Now that just gave my heart a throb, to the bottom of my feet And I swore as I took another pull, my Bessie can't be beat Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak, she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one There's a flood out in California and up north it's freezing cold And this living off the road is gettin' pretty old So I guess I'll call up my big mama, tell her I'll be rolling in But you know, deep down, I'm kind of tempted To go and see my Bessie again Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak, she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one

Link to the picture: http://thingstolookathigh.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/alice-in-wonderland-trippy.png Robert Hunter, wrote this song in 1970 in London in the same afternoon he wrote "Brokedown Palace" and "To Lay Me Down" (reputedly also drinking an entire bottle of retsina in the process). The song debuted August 18, 1970 at Fillmore West in San Francisco. Like many folk songs, "Ripple" addresses itself as a song and an instrument of the performers' emotional expression. Several lines throughout the song echo the 23rd Psalm of the Bible. Trip hard and good, motherfuckers.

THE BAND live at Big Pink 1969 "Up On Cripple Creek" beyond rare

02:37
Incredible footage of The Band (said to be) from the house they called Big Pink (Bob Dylan's "club house"). Up On Cripple Creek - Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Garth... everyone sweet and young and rockin'. Although this turns out to not be Pig Pink, the footage is equal to the time frame and area. Awesome stuff this one, big time rare and early. ** Introduction by Robbie + Grace Slick speaks for a few seconds part way through).** Regardless of location, it is excellent footage...

Grateful Dead - Friend of The Devil

03:24
Garcia,Dawson,Hunter Lyrics: I lit out from reno, I was trailed by twenty hounds Didnt get to sleep last night till the morning came around. Set out runnin but I take my time A friend of the devil is a friend of mine If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight. Ran into the devil, babe, he loaned me twenty bills I spent the night in utah in a cave up in the hills. Set out runnin but I take my time, a friend of the devil is a friend of mine, If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight. I ran down to the levee but the devil caught me there He took my twenty dollar bill and vanished in the air. Set out runnin but I take my time A friend of the devil is a friend of mine If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight. Got two reasons why I cry away each lonely night, The first ones named sweet anne marie, and shes my hearts delight. The second one is prison, babe, the sheriffs on my trail, And if he catches up with me, Ill spend my life in jail. Got a wife in chino, babe, and one in cherokee The first one says shes got my child, but it dont look like me. Set out runnin but I take my time, A friend of the devil is a friend of mine, If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.

Grateful Dead - Truckin'

05:09
Grateful Dead - Truckin' Garcia;Lesh;Weir;Hunter Lyrics:Truckin got my chips cashed in. keep truckin, like the do-dah man Together, more or less in line, just keep truckin on. Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on main street. Chicago, new york, detroit and its all on the same street. Your typical city involved in a typical daydream Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings. Dallas, got a soft machine; houston, too close to new orleans; New yorks got the ways and means; but just wont let you be, oh no. Most of the cast that you meet on the streets speak of true love, Most of the time theyre sittin and cryin at home. One of these days they know they better get goin Out of the door and down on the streets all alone. Truckin, like the do-dah man. once told me youve got to play your hand Sometimes your cards aint worth a dime, if you dont layem down, Sometimes the lights all shinin on me; Other times I can barely see. Lately it occurs to me what a long, strange trip its been. What in the world ever became of sweet jane? She lost her sparkle, you know she isnt the same Livin on reds, vitamin c, and cocaine, All a friend can say is aint it a shame? Truckin, up to buffalo. been thinkin, you got to mellow slow Takes time, you pick a place to go, and just keep truckin on. Sittin and starin out of the hotel window. Got a tip theyre gonna kick the door in again Id like to get some sleep before I travel, But if you got a warrant, I guess youre gonna come in. Busted, down on bourbon street, set up, like a bowlin pin. Knocked down, it gets to wearin thin. they just wont let you be, oh no. Youre sick of hangin around and youd like to travel; Get tired of travelin and you want to settle down. I guess they cant revoke your soul for tryin, Get out of the door and light out and look all around. Sometimes the lights all shinin on me; Other times I can barely see. Lately it occurs to me what a long, strange trip its been. Truckin, Im a goin home. whoa whoa baby, back where I belong, Back home, sit down and patch my bones, and get back truckin on. Hey now get back truckin home.

The Weight - The Band (lyrics)

04:33
Noticed that the non-live version of this song wasn't on youtube.. Lyrics: I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead I just need some place where I can lay my head "Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?" He just grinned and shook my hand, "no" was all he said Take a load off, Fanny Take a load for free Take a load off, Fanny And (and) (and) you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me) I picked up my bag, I went lookin' for a place to hide When I saw Carmen and the Devil walkin' side by side I said, "Hey, Carmen, come on let's go downtown" She said, "I gotta go but my friend can stick around" Take a load off, Fanny Take a load for free Take a load off, Fanny And (and) (and) you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me) Go down, Miss Moses, there's nothin' you can say It's just ol' Luke and Luke's waitin' on the Judgment Day "Well, Luke, my friend, what about young Anna Lee?" He said, "Do me a favor, son, won't you stay and keep Anna Lee company?" Take a load off, Fanny Take a load for free Take a load off, Fanny And (and) (and) you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me) Crazy Chester followed me and he caught me in the fog He said, "I will fix your rack if you'll take Jack, my dog" I said, "Wait a minute, Chester, you know I'm a peaceful man" He said, "That's okay, boy, won't you feed him when you can" Yeah, take a load off, Fanny Take a load for free Take a load off, Fanny And (and) (and) you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me) Catch a cannon ball now to take me down the line My bag is sinkin' low and I do believe it's time To get back to Miss Fanny, you know she's the only one Who sent me here with her regards for everyone Take a load off, Fanny Take a load for free Take a load off, Fanny And (and) (and) you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me)

These guy are amazing right now! 05/08/77 As I was walkin' 'round Grosvenor Square Not a chill to the winter but a nip to the air, From the other direction, she was calling my eye, It could be an illusion, but I might as well try, might as well try. She had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes. And I knew without askin' she was into the blues. She wore scarlet begonias tucked into her curls, I knew right away she was not like other girls, other girls. In the thick of the evening when the dealing got rough, She was too pat to open and too cool to bluff. As I picked up my matches and was closing the door, I had one of those flashes I'd been there before, been there before. Well, I ain't often right but I've never been wrong. Seldom turns out the way it does in a song. Once in a while you get shown the light In the strangest of places if you look at it right. Well there ain't nothing wrong with the way she moves, Scarlet begonias or a touch of the blues. And there's nothing wrong with the look that's in her eyes, I had to learn the hard way to let her pass by, let her pass by The wind in the willow's playin' "Tea for Two"; The sky was yellow and the sun was blue, Strangers stoppin' strangers just to shake their hand, Everybody's playin' in the heart of gold band, heart of gold band.

The Band - Up On Cripple Creek (live appearance)

04:33
The Band was a rock music group active from 1967 to 1976 and again from 1983 to 1999. The original group (19671976) consisted of four Canadians: Robbie Robertson (guitar, piano, vocals); Richard Manuel (piano, harmonica, drums, saxophone, organ, vocals); Garth Hudson (organ, piano, clavinet, accordion, synthesizer, saxophone); and Rick Danko (bass guitar, violin, trombone, vocals), and one American, Levon Helm (drums, mandolin, guitar, bass guitar, vocals). The members of the Band first came together as they joined rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins' backing group, The Hawks, one by one between 1958 and 1963. Upon leaving Hawkins in 1964, they were known as The Levon Helm Sextet (the sixth member being sax player Jerry Penfound), then Levon and the Hawks (without Penfound). In 1965, they released a single on Ware Records under the name Canadian Squires, but returned as Levon and the Hawks for a recording session for Atco later in 1965. At about the same time, Bob Dylan recruited Helm and Robertson for two concerts, then the entire group for his U.S. tour in 1965 and world tour in 1966. They also joined him on the informal recordings that later became The Basement Tapes. Because they were always "the band" to various frontmen, Helm said the name "The Band" worked well when the group came into its own and left Saugerties, New York, to begin recording their own material. They recorded two of the most acclaimed albums of the late 1960s: their 1968 debut Music from Big Pink (featuring the single "The Weight") and 1969's The Band. They broke up in 1976, but reformed in 1983 without founding guitarist Robbie Robertson. Although the Band was always more popular with music journalists and fellow musicians than with the general public, they have remained an admired and influential group. The group was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked them #50 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and in 2008, they received the Grammy's Lifetime Achievement Award. ~SOURCE: Wikipedia PLEASE NOTE: I divided my uploads among multiple channels, Bookmark this link in your browser for instant access to an index with links to all of John1948's oldies classics. Gratful Dead - Sugar Magnolia

03:17
Weir;Hunter Lyrics: Sugar magnolia, blossoms blooming, heads all empty and I dont care, Saw my baby down by the river, knew shed have to come up soon for air. Sweet blossom come on, under the willow, we can have high times if youll abide We can discover the wonders of nature, rolling in the rushes down by the riverside. Shes got everything delightful, shes got everything I need, Takes the wheel when Im seeing double, pays my ticket when I speed She comes skimmin through rays of violet, she can wade in a drop of dew, She dont come and I dont follow, waits backstage while I sing to you. Well, she can dance a cajun rhythm, jump like a willys in four wheel drive. Shes a summer love for spring, fall and winter. she can make happy any man alive. Sugar magnolia, ringing that bluebell, caught up in sunlight, come on out singing Ill walk you in the sunshine, come on honey, come along with me. Shes got everything delightful, shes got everything I need, A breeze in the pines and the sun and bright moonlight, lazing in the sunshine yes Indeed. Sometimes when the cuckoos crying, when the moon is half way down, Sometimes when the night is dying, I take me out and I wander around, I wander round. Sunshine, daydream, walking in the tall trees, going where the wind goes Blooming like a red rose, breathing more freely, Ride our singin, Ill walk you in the morning sunshine Sunshine, daydream. sunshine, daydream. walking in the sunshine.

Driving that train, high on cocaine, Casey Jones YOU BETTER, watch your speed. Trouble ahead, trouble behind, And you know that notion just crossed my mind. This old engine makes it on time, Leaves Central Station 'bout a quarter to nine, Hits River Junction at seventeen TWO, At a quarter to ten you know it's DRIVIN' again. Driving that train, high on cocaine, Casey Jones YOU BETTER, watch your speed. Trouble ahead, trouble behind, And you know that notion just crossed my mind. Trouble ahead, Lady in red, Take my advice you'd be better off dead. Switchman's sleeping, train hundred and two is On the wrong track and headed for you. Driving that train, high on cocaine, Casey Jones YOU BETTER, watch your speed. Trouble ahead, YOU KNOW, trouble behind, And you know that notion just crossed my mind. Trouble with you is the trouble with me, Got two good eyes but WE still don't see. Come round the bend, you know it's the end, The fireman screams and the engine just gleams... Driving that train, high on cocaine, Casey Jones YOU BETTER, watch your speed. Trouble ahead, trouble behind, And you know that notion just crossed my mind. Driving that train, high on cocaine, Casey Jones YOU BETTER, watch your speed. Trouble ahead, trouble behind, And you know that notion just crossed my mind. Driving that train, high on cocaine, Casey Jones you better watch your speed. Trouble ahead, you know, trouble behind. And you know that notion just crossed my mind. Driving that train, high on cocaine, Casey Jones you better watch your speed. Trouble ahead, you know, trouble behind. And you know that notion just crossed my mind. And you know that notion just crossed my mind.
