Cripple Creek Revisited (Video 1 of 2): Bluegrass Banjo Lesson

14:57
Hear this tune played with guitar rhythm backup (slow, medium, fast) starting at 12:25. Guitar chords are provided on-screen at 10:12. I teach an introduction to the tune at 11:11. This is video 1 of 2 -- Here I revisit the two "Regular" parts of Cripple Creek (as on Page 1 of my tab sheet) with split screen and on-screen tab (My original Cripple Creek video was uploaded before I had those capabilities. NOTE: During the video I refer to the fact that both parts repeat. On the printed sheet, they also repeat, but I wrote in the repeated parts, rather than using repeat signs and first and second endings, which can be confusing to beginners. On Video 2, I teach variations to both the A and B parts of the tune, plus an ending lick. Find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzR1HkHuJok Free tab sheets (PDF) and play-along tracks (MP3) for this and many other tunes are available at my website, www.littlerockbanjo.com. Hope you enjoy. I have posted this teaching video for instructional purposes only and, in my opinion, it constitutes fair use: "The fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright."

Bluegrass Slow Jam to Cripple Creek in G

04:33
Slow speed (about 132 on the metronome) Bluegrass Slow Jam to Cripple Creek in G. Simple chord progression on the guitar in the key of G. Good for guitar, dobro, banjo. Fiddle players seem to like A. Dobro players often put a capo on the second fret, then play as if in the key of G. I'm not a guitar teacher, but rather a dobro student. I'm making these for myself for my own dobro practice and thought I'd share it on Youtube.

Bluegrass Backing Track - Cripple Creek (rhythm guitar track)

You can purchase this Bluegrass Backing Track @ http://bluegrassbackingtracks.bandcamp.com/track/bluegrass-backing-track-cripple-creek Cripple Creek was one of the first tunes bluegrass or otherwise I learned when I first started playing guitar. It has stayed with me through the years and is still a favorite at jams. In the rhythm guitar Backing Track it is played in the Key of G. The tune does not change chord structure G,C,G,D,G, I use the C some times and some times I don't. Enjoy your picking and thanks for using a Backing Track by Randy Struble. In the office today, but hopefully you won't mind the different "scenery". :) If you've been practicing what you've learned in the beginner series, you're probably ready for some different ideas to try in Cripple Creek. I'll show you a few different ideas here. Get what you can, let the rest go. Don't try to do it exactly like I do. That's not the point. I'd rather hear you blazing your own trail. :) I'm playing a Recording King M5

Learn 3 Easy Banjo Chords from Tony Trischka: G, C, D7

03:42
From the Beginner section of his online curriculum, Tony Trischka (http://artistworks.com/tony-trischka) introduces 3 easy banjo chords: G, C and D7. Tony Trischka's online lessons at ArtistWorks are constructed to give beginners the best foundation for learning to play the banjo. Not only is Tony considered to be one of most innovative banjo players of all time, he is also one of the most respected and sought-after instructors with a deep history of teaching. In the above sample lesson from his online curriculum, Tony teaches three easy banjo chords: G, C, and D7. As you'll see, you're only a few chords away from being able to make your own music. Tony says he likes to start students learning three chords to begin with: G, C, and D7. He says it’s critical to start out playing these banjo chords “because bluegrass banjo is so oriented to the key of G.” Playing a chord simply means playing three or more notes together. Same as other instruments, banjo chords are built off of a single note, called the root. With the banjo in G tuning, the G chord is the root. You can simply strum all five strings to make a G chord. Tony goes on to explain that in bluegrass, the G/C/D7 three-chord pattern is very common. What’s more, many of Earl Scruggs’ great instrumentals make use of these chords in the key of G. In case you don’t know, Earl Scruggs was one of the most innovative banjo players who ever lived. He pioneered the distinctive three-finger bluegrass sound that you’re probably already familiar with. This is just a sample from the hundreds of banjo lessons that are available for students of all levels in the Online Banjo School with Tony Trischka at ArtistWorks. Members have full unlimited access to all lessons, ranging from beginner to advanced - and everything in between - plus the ability to submit videos directly to Tony Trischka through Video Exchange®. Tony will watch your practice video and then record his own video that speaks directly to your submission and what you should practice in order to improve. As a member you'll also have access to the Tony's entire Video Exchange Library, which dates back to 2009 and continues to expand every week with new material to watch and learn from. So even if you don't submit a video to Tony, you'll still benefit from all the advice he's given to all his students from over the years. Learning online through Video Exchange is the most effective path toward progression, guaranteed. Do you love the jangly sound of bluegrass banjo? Do you dare to dream of playing along with these songs one day? With ArtistWorks and Tony Trischka you can fulfill your musical dream of learning banjo in the comfort of your own home at your own pace. What’s keeping You From living your dream? 10.1 - Backup for Cripple Creek - The A Section

01:23
To complete learning any song you gotta learn the backup! This lesson will teach you how to apply the vamping and chords you learned in Lesson #9 to the song, "Cripple Creek." This backup arrangement of Cripple Creek is mostly based out of the root position chords, although there is one switch to the D chord that features the first inversion chord. This by far not the only way to play the backup for Cripple Creek, so make sure you head over to the free Cripple Creek tab after working on this.
