Peru will become the world’s second-largest copper miner, behind neighboring Chile, after China has invested $20 billion in copper mining projects. CCTV America’s Dan Collyns reported this story from Peru.

Hot Chili Ltd (ASX:HCH) managing director Christian Easterday speaks to Proactive Investors about the copper developer's growing portfolio of coastal Chilean assets, and planning for a dual listing. In addition to the advanced, large-scale flagship Productora project, Hot Chili has acquired the El Fuego Project, comprising a trio of historical mines known as San Antonio, Valentina and Lulu. They are actively being explored to enhance the grades and margins from Productora's development. The company is looking to add further assets in the area ahead of a DFS. "The phase that we're moving through at the moment is a phase of consolidating this entire region and really putting our arms around multiple ore sources to feed into a central plant to produce a copper operation that will be producing some 100,000 tonnes of copper per annum. And just for context, that would make Hot Chili and the Productora development indisputably the largest copper developer on the ASX," says Easterday.

Protests against the Tia Maria copper mine in southern Peru are heating up. On Tuesday police clashed with protesters, leaving at least two more civilians dead. The repression came after opponents to the mining project closed schools and businesses in a three-day regional strike. Roads leading to the regional capital of Arequipa were also blocked. Protesters say that Tia María must stop and that a solution must come from all the people in the Valley of Tambo. In addition to 4,000 police, the government sent the Army into the area last Saturday, but stopped short of declaring a state of emergency. The Army is scheduled to stay until June 7th. According to the Institute of Legal Defense, such government moves only increase the chances of tragic developments. Ge Hongling, president Aluminum Corporation of China (Chinalco) announced the expansion of the Toromocho copper deposit in Peru, with an investment of 1.3 billion dollars, before President Martín Vizcarra, during the tenth anniversary of the Chinese company’s operations in Peru. At the end of the works, the daily capacity will triple to 157 thousand tons and the production of fine copper will double up to 300 thousand tons per year. Chinalco acquired Toromocho with an investment of 860 million dollars in 2007 and two years later began the copper extraction, with the projection of obtaining a production of 10 million tons. President Vizcarra welcomed the investment and stated the importance of the project, which not only increases copper production, but will also help to boost the Peruvian economy. Through geological surveys, it was determined that Toromocho contains a reserve of one thousand 526 million tons of ore with an average copper grade of 0.48%, an average molybdenum grade of 0.019% and an average silver grade of 6.88 grams per ton, in addition to a 36-years life.

Chile on Wednesday announced it had disposed of several thousand mines in an area around the city of Arica near its border with Peru. In 1997, Chile signed up to the Ottawa Treaty which aimed to clear the country of explosives remaining from the period of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship and assist victims of landmines. A total of 6,095 anti-personnel and anti-tank mines were destroyed on Wednesday. According to EFE, 70 army specialists are in charge of detecting, unearthing and disposing of more than 70,000 more mines distributed in another 47 areas of the country by 2020, with the aim to meet its obligation to destroy all the mines in Chileanian territory by then. The Chilean ministry of defence reactivated the National De-Mining Commission in August and declared an increase in the number of demining personnel beginning in 2016. A National Humanitarian De-mining Plan was also developed by the government to assist victims of mines and work on mine accident prevention, EFE reported.

Protests against the Tia Maria copper mine in the Tambo Valley in southern Peru have entered their 51st day and far from winding down, they are, in fact, intensifying. The protests now encompass the entire Arequipa region, with a 72-hour general strike currently underway that began yesterday, which closed down all business activity in the country's second largest city. Protesters say that 13,000 acres of agricultural land will be affected by the mine. The 33 - in theaters November 13th. http://the33movie.com https://www.facebook.com/the33movie --- From Alcon Entertainment and Phoenix Pictures comes the unforgettable true story of “The 33.” In 2010, the eyes of the world turned to Chile, where 33 miners had been buried alive by the catastrophic explosion and collapse of a 100-year-old gold and copper mine. Over the next 69 days, an international team worked night and day in a desperate attempt to rescue the trapped men as their families and friends, as well as millions of people globally, waited and watched anxiously for any sign of hope. But 200 stories beneath the surface, in the suffocating heat and with tensions rising, provisions—and time—were quickly running out. A story of resilience, personal transformation and triumph of the human spirit, the film takes us to the Earth’s darkest depths, revealing the psyches of the men trapped in the mine, and depicting the courage of both the miners and their families who refused to give up. Based on the gripping true story of survival—and filmed with the cooperation of the miners, their families and their rescuers—“The 33” reveals the never-before-seen actual events that unfolded, above and below ground, which became nothing less than a worldwide phenomenon. The international cast is led by Antonio Banderas, Rodrigo Santoro, Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche (“The English Patient”), James Brolin, and Lou Diamond Phillips, with Bob Gunton and Gabriel Byrne. The main cast also includes Mario Casas, Jacob Vargas, Juan Pablo Raba, Oscar Nuñez, Tenoch Huerta, Marco Treviño, Adriana Barraza, Kate Del Castillo, Cote de Pablo, Elizabeth De Razzo, Naomi Scott, Gustavo Angarita, and Alejandro Goic. Patricia Riggen directed “The 33” from a screenplay by Mikko Alanne, Oscar nominee Craig Borten (“Dallas Buyers Club”) and Michael Thomas, based on the screen story by Jose Rivera and the book Deep Down Dark by Hector Tobar. The film was produced by Oscar nominee Mike Medavoy (“Black Swan”), Robert Katz and Edward McGurn. Carlos Eugenio Lavin, Leopoldo Enriquez, Alan Zhang and José Luis Escolar served as executive producers. The behind-the-scene creative team included cinematographer Checco Varese, production designer Marco Niro, editor Michael Tronick and Oscar-nominated costume designer Paco Delgado (“Les Misérables”). The Academy Award-winning team of Alex Henning and Ben Grossman (“Hugo”) supervised the visual effects. The score was composed by Oscar winner James Horner (“Titanic”). “The 33” was filmed on location in Chile’s harshly remote yet stunningly beautiful Atacama desert just kilometers away from where the event took place, and deep within two mines located in central Colombia. A presentation of Alcon Entertainment and Phoenix Pictures, “The 33” is slated to open on November 13, 2015 and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

An horrific ordeal for nine miners trapped underground in Peru is finally over. Their families almost gave up hope but today the men saw daylight for the first time in almost a week as well as the rescue workers who freed them. The makeshift copper-and-gold mine partially collapsed last Thursday with the men penned in 200 meters down under tons of rubble in Cabeza de Negro in Quillque. Luckily for them emergency crews were able to use a giant hose - which was already in place before the accident - to send oxygen and liquids down to the men and keep them alive. The fact that a near tragedy has been averted has prompted Peruvian President Ollanta Huala to order a tightening of the law. He told news crews he will formalise much of the informal mining sector which use abandoned works to generates an estimated $2 billion a year. He's urged firms to register workers, and improve health and safety for those they employ. Families hope that will put an end to the practice where poor people are under such financial pressures they feel they need to work in dangerous conditions to earn very little in a bid to feed their families.

Protests have resurged in the Arequipa region of Peru over the proposed Tía María copper mine. In the early morning hours two protesters were killed and 10 injured in clashes with the police. The protests have been going on for 44 days straight. Clashes on Sunday left 20 civilians and 15 police officers injured after authorities continued to clear roads blocked by demonstrators opposing the Southern Copper Corporation and its mining project. Most demonstrators are local farmers from the Tambo Valley who do not trust the company and want to prevent environmental damage that hinders agriculture. During elections President Ollanta Humala said he would respect farmer demands, but analysts say that he is responding to pressure from business elites who favor extractive industries as the sole growth motor. Observers also note that the police have used bullets and teargas to repress demonstrators and that on Monday, 3,000 police were deployed. Clashes are expected to continue.
