Big plans are underway to build a half mile riverwalk promenade connecting Broad Ripple Village and Broad Ripple Park. RTV6’s Kara Kenney got a sneak peek at the plans and is working for you to find out how much it will cost you the taxpayer. Currently, Broad Ripple Village is the only cultural district that’s located outside of downtown, and the Broad Ripple Village Association wants to make sure it remains a world-class amenity. Broad Ripple has shops, restaurants, the White River, the Monon Trail, and Broad Ripple Park but they’re not well connected.

After four runner-up finishes in state boys basketball, the Indianapolis Arsenal Technical Titans had their photo taken this time with the championship trophy in hand. Tech captured a frenetic 63-59 victory over the Lake Central Indians in the Class 4A title game. The Titans, after leading by as many as 23 points in the third quarter, had to hold off a furious Lake Central rally that saw the Indians pull within three, 62-59, with 11 seconds left in the game. But a free throw by Tech's Trey Lyles then gave the Titans the breathing room they needed. The fourth quarter proved dramatic with various runs by both teams. First, an 8-0 push by Lake Central sliced Tech's lead to nine. Then the Titans mounted a 7-0 run to re-establish the lead at 16. Then came the one final surge by the Indians before Tech put away its first state crown and the Titans' followers at Bankers Life Fieldhouse erupted with cheers. Tech becomes the first Indianapolis Public Schools team to win a boys state championship since Indianapolis Broad Ripple did it in 1980. Jeremie Tyler led Tech with 19 points. Lyles had 16 points and 12 rebounds. Mikey Jones scored 15 points. Coach Jason Delaney's Titans, ranked second in the Associated Press poll, finished at 27-2. Delaney became the seventh coach to win a state title at two different schools. He led Waldron to the 2004 Class A crown. Tye Wilburn topped Lake Central with 20 points, including 14 in the second half. Tyler Wideman collected 19 points and 12 rebounds. Coach Dave Milausnic's Indians, ranked eighth in the AP poll, completed their season at 22-4. Lake Central was making its second appearance in the state finals and first in 30 years. Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Trey Lyles of Arsenal Technical High School as the winner of the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award in Class 4A Boys Basketball.

Who we are: The Indianapolis Art Center was founded in 1934 as a Works Project Administration program during the Great Depression to serve artists. Today, the Art Center inhabits one Indianapolis’ only Michael Graves-designed building which sits on a 10 acre stretch along the banks of the White River in the Broad Ripple neighborhood of Indianapolis. Each year, the Art Center offers hundreds of art classes, over 50 art exhibitions in six art galleries, an Outreach program that takes art to underserved communities, and the Broad Ripple Art Fair. What we do: The mission of the Indianapolis Art Center is to engage, enlighten, and inspire our community by providing interactive art education, outreach to underserved audiences, support of artists and exposure to the visual arts. Why we’re important: In its most meaningful moments, art transforms all of us. For adults, hands-on creative learning provides the opportunity to express emotions, build connections to others and hone new creative skills. For kids, arts education creates pathways to academic achievement, career goals and civic engagement. And it’s fun and rewarding. How we affect the community: The Indianapolis Art Center impacts the community by providing access to art education, exposure to living artists and hosting meaningful events that connect the community to creativity and art-making. Our over 500 art classes each year offer anyone with a desire to connect with their artistic side in a creative and social community to thrive. Our nationally-recognized exhibitions connect the community with the artwork of local, regional and national artists. Our Outreach programs take art outside of our building to provide high-quality art education to underserved youth in 19 afterschool sites, a Teen Art Council, a mentoring program in partnership with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and other unique programs that address current social issues through art-making. How you can help: Your contribution to the Art Center is a commitment to the transformation of our community through creativity. While our work might look like glass blowing or shaping clay from the outside, you know that the real outcomes happen inside – in forging pride, friendships, growth, hope and much more at the Art Center and beyond. A donation to the Art Center is the best way to assure we can continue our mission for another 80 years.

Indianapolis Broad Ripple, displaying fast and ready skills, handed New Albany their only defeat of the season to capture the 70th Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Championship. The impressive 73-66 victory was the first championship title for the Broad Ripple Rockets and Coach Bill Smith, Sr. Broad Ripple opened with a quick 10-4 lead in the contest before New Albany poured in 10 straight points. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 14-14. New Albany jumped ahead 20-14 with some outside shooting by Bennett. By half-time the Ripple Rockets had built up a cushion of 33-28. While New Albany came back at the start of the second half to lead 34-33, this was the last advantage for them. The Rockets had a 50-44 advantage heading into the final session. New Albany never gave up as they tried their best man-to-man defense while the clock wound down. The Rockets spent most of the final period shooting fouls, thus gaining a better margin. The afternoon games were very close with New Albany defeating Andrean 69-68 and Broad Ripple downing Marion 71-69 on Stacey Toran's 57-foot two-handed desperation bank shot at the final buzzer. Jeff Todd of Marion was named the recipient of the Arthur L. Trester Award for Mental Attitude.
