How the blockchain will radically transform the economy | Bettina Warburg
Say hello to the decentralized economy -- the blockchain is about to change everything. In this lucid explainer of the complex (and confusing) technology, Bettina Warburg describes how the blockchain will eliminate the need for centralized institutions like banks or governments to facilitate trade, evolving age-old models of commerce and finance into something far more interesting: a distributed, transparent, autonomous system for exchanging value. One World Currency - China Creating Blockchain Currency
China’s central bank is going digital. After assembling a research team in 2014, the People’s Bank of China has done trial runs of its prototype cryptocurrency. That’s taking it a step closer to becoming one of the first major central banks to issue digital money that can be used for anything from buying noodles to purchasing a car. For users transacting over their smartphones or laptops, a PBOC-backed cryptocurrency probably wouldn’t seem much different to existing payment methods such as Alipay or WeChat. But for sellers, they would get digital payments directly from the buyer, lowering transaction costs as the middleman is cut out of the process. At the same time as it builds up its own capabilities, the PBOC is increasing scrutiny of bitcoin and other private digital tenders. It doesn’t want a bitcoin bubble to blow up. And since currencies have historically been issued by the state, not private players, it doesn’t want to cede the cryptocurrency space to companies it has no control over. More bad news pushes bitcoin’s value below $9,000
More bad news pushes bitcoin’s value below $9,000, Bitcoin's month-long price slide continued on Thursday as the virtual currency fell below $9,000 for the first time since November. As we publish this article, one bitcoin is worth $8,700. That's down 12 percent over the last 24 hours and 55 percent from December's peak of $19,500. The latest price decline comes amid growing concerns that the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem has become rife with scams and other questionable behavior. None of these developments have been focused on bitcoin specifically, but the cryptocurrency ecosystem is highly interconnected. All the other major cryptocurrencies have suffered losses over the last 24 hours, and many virtual currencies have seen their value decline by double digits. The first bit of bad news this week was Facebook's announcement that it was restricting cryptocurrency ads on its various platforms.

UK central banker apologizes for ‘menopausal’ remark
UK central banker apologizes for ‘menopausal’ remark: http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/991505/uk-central-banker-apologizes-for-menopausal-remark. Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9hES_THAVvNV-3eKq24uog?sub_confirmation=1 This Feb. 8, 2018 file photo shows Bank of England deputy governor Ben Broadbent in London.(Victoria Jones/PA via AP) LONDON (AP) — One of Britain’s top central bankers apologized Wednesday for saying the British economy is entering a “menopausal” moment, a ist remark that prompted widespread criticism. In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Ben Broadbent, the Bank of England’s deputy governor for monetary policy, used the “menopausal” metaphor to describe economies that were “past their peak and no longer so potent.” The comment sparked a backlash of criticism. ADVERTISEMENT “This poor choice of words is very disappointing and distracts from the real issue at hand,” said Carolyn Fairbairn, director-general at the Confederation of British Industry, the leading business lobby group. And Frances O’Grady, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, said this “kind of language is totally inappropriate. There’s no need to resort to lazy, ist comments to describe problems in the economy.” Britain is in a moment of low growth that many attribute to uncertainty surrounding the upcoming exit from the European Union and to a long period of weak productivity growth. Broadbent later apologized in a statement issued in response to the interview, which was flashed across the front page of the newspaper. “I’m sorry for my poor choice of language in an interview with the Telegraph yesterday and regret the offence caused,” he said. Broadbent said he’d been trying to explain the word “climacteric” — a term, he said, that economic historians use to describe a period of low productivity growth during the nineteenth century. “Economic productivity is something which affects every one of us, of all ages and genders,” he said in his statement. Though he was swift in apologizing, his remark could hurt his chances in succeeding Mark Carney as the central bank’s governor. Carney has said he will stand down in June 2019, and many were tipping Broadbent, a former Goldman Sachs economist, to succeed. British Prime Minister Theresa May will be the one making the decision. Carney has conceded that gender inequality has been a problem at the Bank of England. In its first gender pay gap report, issued last year, the bank found that male employees are paid almost 25 percent more than women. ADVERTISEMENT The bank has introduced diversity targets, including an aim to have 35 percent female representation in senior roles by 2020, up from 30 percent in 2017. “We must also support equality through fair pay,” Carney said. “We’re confident that men and women are paid equally for doing the same job at the Bank — however, the greater proportion of men than women in senior roles creates a gender pay gap.” Subscribe to INQUIRER PLUS to get access to The Philippine Daily Inquirer & other 70+ titles, share up to 5 gadgets, listen to the news, download as early as 4am & share articles on social media. China And Germany Arrest Bitcoin Fraudsters
Suspected Bitcoin fraudsters have been taken into police custody in Germany and China. The German authorities say they arrested two people following an investigation into malware that generated the virtual currency by infecting its victims' PCs. Xinhua reports three people have been detained in China after a trading platform was shut without warning, cutting off investors from their funds. The cases do not appear to be related. The German Federal Criminal Police Office say one of its suspects was arrested in the southern state of Bavaria and the other in the northern region of Lower Saxony. It accuses them of being behind a botnet that allowed its operators to secretly use other people's computers to carry out "Bitcoin mining". The technique - which involves using processing power to solve complicated mathematical problems - is used to create a secure record of Bitcoin transactions. The incentive for the malware's creators to commit their crime was the fact that Bitcoin miners are rewarded for their help with new bitcoins generated as a side-effect of the process. The reward for each puzzle solved is currently 25 bitcoins, currently worth a total of $29,075 (£17,788). Bitcoin breached the $1,000 mark for the first time last week. The police say they are also investigating related cases of fraud, copyright violations and offences related to the distribution of pornography. Chinese detentions The Chinese case relates to the closure of GBL, an online Bitcoin exchange platform based in Hong Kong, launched in May. According to Xinhua, by the end of September it had 4,493 registered members, and a trading volume that made it the fourth biggest in the country. China's official news agency says that on 26 October the site shut operations, leaving a fake postal address as a contact. It adds that three suspects were subsequently apprehended in different locations on the mainland. The agency says that the amount of money involved is unclear. However, the Hong Kong Standard has previously reported that up to HK$31.8m (£2.5m) was at stake. Bitcoin gained fame in China after film star Jet Li's charity One Foundation received a donation in the currency in April to help the victims of an earthquake. In recent weeks there have been a series of articles highlighting its use as a way to circumvent restrictions on money transfers out of the mainland - a factor that analysts say has helped propel a surge in Bitcoin's value.
