The life on a mining village in Western Australia

07:30
After working 9 months in different mining sites around Western Australia, I decided to make this little video after realizing that unless you've been there, it's really hard to imagine what is it to live on a mine site village. It's usually way better that what people imagine... DEATH OF AN OPAL MINING TOWN: Mintabie, South Australia gemstone

07:06
PLEASE SEE REVISED "OPAL ONLY" version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-TR2ewSjvs In January, 2018, the Australian government announced the closing of the town of Mintabie, where, in some of the world's best opal was mined. Mintabie is in Aboriginal lands, although in a resolution, the government leased the town for a period of time, ending in the early 2000's. The reason for the closure of the town (and the mines) was, in my view due to the depletion of opal. Most of the miners left and the town declined, prompting closure. This video is intended as a celebration of the great opal town of Mintabie and its fabulous opal.

Australian mining brings wave of riches

02:47
Thousands of tradespeople commute from Perth by plane, working 12-hour shifts on 24-hour-a-day mining operations. Even the newest qualified earn well over $100,000 a year, but the money has consequences: In towns near mines, prices for everything from property to services are high. Al Jazeera's Andrew Thomas reports from Western Australia.

Insulating Australia's most isolated town from the extremes - Extended Version

06:38
At Knauf Insulation we have a track record of rolling up our sleeves and helping local communities realise the benefits of insulation. The Birdsville project below is one of our proudest moments. In January this year, temperatures in Birdsville, one of Australia's hottest and most isolated towns, reached over 49 degrees. During winter however, the town can reach below 0 degrees at night. What better place to show Australia just how safe, easy and effective using the right kind of insulation can be? This is a video about the people, the place and the journey we went through to insulate the town.

Centralia Burning Ghost Town - Pennsylvania USA

04:26
Centralia, Pennsylvania was nearly entirely evacuated following a coal mine fire, burning beneath the town since 1962. Centralia’s fire started in 1962, when residents turned an old strip mine into a dump, and setting the rubbish alight. The fire spread through an unsealed opening to the underground coal mines, igniting a seam of coal, and the fire has been burning to this day. In 1992, Pennsylvania condemned the town and claimed it under eminent domain in an attempt for force the remaining residents out. Some sued, and were allowed to stay. A section of State Route 61 was abandoned after it began to buckle and crumble from the underground fire. The fire stretches 12km, and burns underneath an area of 15 square kilometres, 300 feet below ground, authorities say the fire could burn for another 250 years. The town now mostly attracts tourists who visit an abandoned highway, where many profanities and obscene pictures are spray painted onto it, over time the highway has earned the nickname Graffiti Highway. Centralia is rumored to have inspired Silent Hill. Kanowna - Ghost Town - Western Australia

07:04
In 1905 there were 12 000 people living in this gold mining town 18 km north east of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. There were 16 hotels, two breweries and an hourly train service to Kalgoorlie. Fortunes were made overnight as the miners, like a plague of locusts, swept through the area. One of the early miners, Tom O'Connor, walked away from the field with the extraordinary sum of £15 000. All of his gold had been found in a claim which was adjacent to the local cemetery so, in a decision showing no respect for the dead and a huge respect for gold fever, the cemetery was opened up to mining. By 1912 it was no longer a municipality. During the Depression the post office and the railway closed. The school closed down after the war and the last hotel closed its doors in 1952. Nothing now remains except rubble and memories.

There’s a whole town in Australia that lives underground

03:06
On the surface, the place looks pretty deserted. With just a few hotels and, randomly, a golf course dotted around, the place has the air of an abandoned town. In fact, around 3,500 people live there. It’s just that most of them (60 per cent) live below the surface – in homes burrowed out of caves. Source: http://metro.co.uk Read here:http://helenastales.weebly.com/blogue/theres-a-whole-town-in-australia-that-lives-underground Follow us on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ufo.maniaII/

This AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK Town Is Dying. ( Drone footage of a small town in Australia )

03:15
I discover an Australian outback town dying. Small towns in Queensland & across Australia are close to death. I took drone footage of one particular outback town; Mingella. Mingela, with an estimated population of 20, is located 90 kilometres west of Townsville, and 48 kilometres east from Charters Towers, in Queensland Australia. The site of Mingela was once known as Cunningham's Waterholes. These billabongs made a practical place for settlers and travellers to camp overnight. Edward Cunningham was the first white man to pass through here in 1861 after Kennedy. It was the ideal location for a railway junction following the Ravenswood gold rush of 1869 and the Charters Towers rush of 1872. The township of Cunningham was surveyed in 1881 and its name soon changed to Ravenswood Junction in 1884. When the railway line was closed in 1930, the name changed again to Mingela from the original Aboriginal place name of "Ming-illa", meaning big waterhole. Bird life is prevalent during the wet season at the remaining waterholes near the Highway. Love Canal, USA In the late 19th century, Love Canal was proposed as a planned community, a "utopian metropolis". But the developer only got as far as digging a large pit before giving up, due to the lack of people who actually wanted to live there. In 1920, Niagara Falls bought the pit and used it as a chemical dump. Far from what the developer was picturing when he came up with the name “Love Canal”. The US army disposed of waste from experiments in Love Canal's pit. Hooker Chemical acquired the property in 1947 and continued chemical disposal. By the 1950s, it was filled with 21,000 tons of waste. Hooker Chemical covered it with clay and soil and declared it sealed. They sold it back to the city of Niagara Falls, which built a neighborhood on top. Residents noticed strange smells and odd illnesses, as well as a shockingly high rate of miscarriages and birth defects. It wasn't until 1978 that the extent of the area's toxicity was revealed when an investigation by the local newspaper led to federal attention. Tests showed inhabitants of Love Canal had chromosomal damage caused by environmental pollution. Over a thousand families were relocated, and the Superfund program was born. 9. Bento Rodrigues, Brazil Bento Rodrigues was a town located near an iron ore mine. The mine dumped its waste into a nearby lake but a dam protected the village from the poisonous water. That is, until 2015, when a containment wall collapsed. 35 million liters (9.2 million gallons) of toxic clay poured out in a 32-foot-tall wave of mud. It crushed Bento Rodrigues and turned the entire town red. Two United Nations environmental experts inspected the mud and discovered high levels of heavy metals and other poisonous chemicals. The mud contaminated the town’s water, which contained lead levels that were 10 to 20 times above Brazil’s legal limit. The owners of the mine had to relocate the people who lived in Bento Rodrigues. It will take at least 10 to 50 years for the area’s environment to recover. 8. New Idria, USA Founded in 1854, New Idria sat near the largest and one of the most productive mercury mines in the United States. In fact, the value of the mine was so high that it was guarded by armed soldiers. Mining there continued until 1971, when the company that owned the mine closed. The town of New Idria was also abandoned. Beneath the surface, 30 miles of underground tunnels leaked water full of mercury. It contaminated the local river and turned it bright orange. Not just mercury either. Aluminum, iron, and nickel, making it as corrosive as battery acid. From the local river, the polluted water contaminated nearby streams and harmed local wildlife. Bacteria turns mercury into methylmercury, one of the nation’s most serious hazardous waste problems. Methylmercury contaminates fish. People who eat the poisoned fish can experience headaches, tingling, and tremors. Children are especially affected: they can develop brain and nervous system damage. In 2011, 157 years after the founding of the town and 40 years after the mine closed, the EPA finally began a program to clean up the area. Wittenoom - Abandoned deadly asbestos mining ghost town in outback Western Australia (CREEPY)!

04:19
This town was really cool to visit and one of our favourite towns in Australia that we've visited so far! Although the town isn't completely abandoned (there is still a couple of residents), as you drive around you really get the feeling of it being a ghost town. There are no government services provided anymore and the residents are responsible for all their own power and water. There is signage up every where warning you of the presence of deadly asbestos, which adds to the creepy feeling of the place! : Please subscribe for more great outback videos : © OZOUTBACK All rights reserved 2017. Top 10 Things to do in Ballarat Victoria Australia

24:58
If you plan on taking a holiday to Victoria Australia, one of the most popular tourist spots to visit outside of Melbourne is Ballarat. It does get a bit cooler than Melbourne, so take some warm clothes! One of the biggest festivals in Ballarat is their Winter Festival. Here they decorate laneways with colourful lights and have a pop up ice skating ring just off Sturt Street. One of the biggest events though is the Winter Wonderlights at Sovereign Hill. I’ll show more of this in the video guide to Ballarat. In this video I will show you some of the best things to do in Ballarat for a family, couple or even solo traveller. This is a list of Ballarat’s top tourist attractions 10. Ballarat Wildlife Park The park was opened in 1987 and covers some 37 acres of natural bushland. If you want to see some natural Australian animals, Ballarat Wildlife Park has plenty, from free roaming kangaroos and emus – where you can hand feed these cute Australian animals. Learn about koalas on one of the guided tours. Get a selfie with a wombat. Watch Tasmanian devils getting fed. See giant tortoises, crocodiles and alligators. And of course the meerkats! Check out the reptile enclose for snakes and lizards. A great place to take the whole family in Ballarat. 9. Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka The Eureka Flag is housed on the historic site of the 1854 Eureka Stockade and is surrounded by the scenic Eureka Stockade Memorial Gardens. 8. The Art Gallery of Ballarat. If you’re an art lover, this is the place to visit in Ballart. It holds both temporary and permanent art works. 7. Gold Museum of Ballarat. Gold is what made this town and this museum gives a fascinating insight to Ballarat’s gold rush. If you buy a ticket to Sovereign Hill, you will get the ticket included to the museum. 6. Lake Wendouree. This is a lovely spot to visit in Ballarat – enjoy a stroll around the lake, stop of one of the cafes or just enjoy the lovely gardens of the Botanic Gardens in Ballarat. Highlights to visit are the Prime Ministers Avenue, Adam Lindsay Gordon Cottage, the Australian Ex- Prisoner of War Memorial, the Ballarat Tramway Museum (try to take a tram ride by Lake Wendouree) and the 1956 Olympic Memorial. 5. Ballarat Ghost Tour. With Ballarat having the reputation of being one of Australia’s most haunted cities why night take a ghost tour of Ballarat at night. Eerie Ghost tours operates a weekend ghost tour of Ballarat. Meet under the clock tower at Ballarat Railway Station for a spooky 2 hour walking ghost tour. Visit haunted spots and listen to ghost stories by the guide. A fun way to see Ballarat. 4. Ballarat Heritage Tours. Take one of this walking tours of Ballarat, learn about this history of the city and its famous landmarks. Taken by an experienced guide who is extremely knowledgeable about Ballarat history. 3. Bloody Ballarat Tour. Take this tour of the dark side of Ballarat – true tales of murder and crime that you don’t learn in your history books. A fantastic tour you should do in Ballarat. The tours run at night. 2. Kryal Castle. One of the more popular things to do in Ballarat, especially for the family is Kryal Castle. Built as medieval castle just outside of town. Fun things to see the knights at the Tournament Arena. Here they joust on horseback and even sword fight. Watch the wizard make potions in his workshop. Visit the Torture Museum or get lost in the castle’s maze. There are places to eat and you can even stay overnight at one of their rooms. I will do another video on accommodation at Kryal Castle. Prices are listed on the website. 1/ Sovereign Hill Without a doubt the number one tourist attraction in Ballarat is Sovereign Hill. It has been voted Australia’s best ‘Major Tourist Attraction’ multiple times. A theme park set back as an 1850’s gold mining town. Learn to pan for gold in a replica river. Go underground on some the gold mining tours. Watch people preforming chores dressed in period costumes. See how they make candy the old way. Some other popular attractions at Sovereign Hill include the Red Coat Soldiers musket firing, horse and coach rides, bowling, candle making, getting and old photo taken and other street activities. A great place to take the whole family - a great educational experience for kids to learn about history. During Winter Sovereign Hill has its Winter Wonderlights Festival. This is a specular light show – that for me is a must do in Ballarat. The lights and snow effects make this truly a wonderful show to experience. During the festival they decorate Main Street shops with Christmas decorates, have a band playing Christmas Carols and you might even see Santa. One of the best Christmas in July events in Australia! A must for the family! Ticket prices are listed on the website. *All rates and conditions subject to change without notice. Please check directly with the establishments for latest prices and conditions.

The World’s Strangest Underground Town in Australia

03:40
You wouldn’t quite believe it until you saw it. Today, we will take you to the moon, where you will view (with your own eyes) a bizarre moonscape comprising thousands of deep dark holes. Just joking! This is not the moon, this is White Cliffs. This is Australia mate! Set in the middle of nowhere (1100km north-west of Sydney) this dot of a town has a rich opal mining history dating back to the 1800’s. So much so, the landscape comprises thousands of hillocks of earth, dug and discarded in their quest to strike it rich, to find the mighty opal stone. And would you know it, some smart fella (probably a kiwi) decided that the best place to live was in these holes. Crikey! In this otherworldly destination, most of its 100 residents live underground, to escape the heat and the wild kangaroos that roam the outback. Is this the world’s most unusual town? It is located about 1,186 kilometres (737 mi) north of Perth, and 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) north of the Tropic of Capricorn. It can be reached by the Great Northern Highway. In the 2006 Australian census, its population was 4,245. Newman is a modern mining town, with suburban-style homes contrasting with the surrounding reddish desert. The Hickman Crater is 35 kilometres (22 mi) north of Newman. Commercial area ============ Typical of company towns, Newman is laid out with a core, where shopping and hotels are located, surrounded by residential areas, with more industrial activities on the outskirts. There is one shopping mall in the town, two shopping plazas, three hotels, and three bars/restaurants outside of those contained in the hotels. One public outdoor pool serves the town's population. Transport ============ A privately owned railway, the Mount Newman railway, was constructed linking it to Port Hedland which itself was upgraded to handle shipment of the ore to the world market. On 21 June 2001 a train 7.353 km (4.569 mi) long, comprising 682 ore cars and eight locomotives made the Newman—Port Hedland trip and is listed as the world's longest ever train. The ore trains are typically over 2 km long. Newman is also a service town to the nearby mining settlements like Tom Price and Paraburdoo. The town is served by Newman Airport. Architecture ========== Being founded in the 1960s, Newman's architecture reflects the modernist styles of that decade and the next, being predominantly functional and devoid of detail or embellishment. As the town was founded and built by a steel company, the majority of buildings use a steel frame construction. This applies to the suburban style homes themselves, most of them being two prefabricated halves inserted together into a steel I-section frame, the columns of which are left exposed on the exterior of the home. This construction method serves not only to showcase the company's product, but also gives strong resistance to cyclone winds which can affect the region from time to time. For this same reason, most houses are elevated from the ground by a few steps. Many houses also have large air-conditioning units situated next to them to provide adequate cooling against the very hot summer temperatures. Climate ========== Newman has an arid climate, with very hot summers and mild winters. The temperature reaches or exceeds over 38°C almost every day in the summer. On 15 January 1998, the temperature reached an all-time recorded high of 47.0°C. Precipitation is sparse, but the influx of monsoonal moisture in the summer, which generally begins in December and lasts until April, raises humidity levels and can cause occasional heavy storms. Winter months are mild to warm, with daily high temperatures ranging from the 20°C to 26°C (18-22°C), and low (nighttime) temperatures rarely dipping below 6°C.
