Mining is undertaken using dredges which float in an artificial mining pond. These dredges pump the mineral sands that form the wall of the pond in to a floating wet concentrator plant (WCP). A heavy mineral concentrate (HMC) is produced which is then pumped to a nearby minerals separation plant (MSP) where it is separated into final products for export via Kenmare's product transshipment vessel, Bronagh J.

Sand Mine in Monterey Bay Washing Away Its Shorelines
The Lapis Lustre sand mine owned by CEMEX in Marina, CA has been drawing sand from the Monterey Bay for several decades. This is a problem as Monterey Bay has the highest average long term erosion rate in all of California, according to the US Geological Survey. Several research studies have shown that the mine is contributing 50-75% of the current shoreline erosion rates affecting southern Monterey Bay. However, CEMEX claims they do not effect rates of shoreline erosion. Petri Dish reporter Will Houston gives a brief overview about the mine, its effects, and its future. The full article about the CEMEX mine can be found at www.californiapetridish.com. References for this video are listed below. South Africa's Illegal Gold Mines
In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down. The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold. Sand mining on river beds and banks - Kerala
The rivers in Kerala are densely populated with sand miners. The indiscriminate removal of sand led to the creation of more stringent laws, but large amounts of sand are still smuggled. Thieves stealing sand from river beds and banks to feed construction boom has once again become rampant in the district, threatening the existence of rivers. The Kerala River Bank Protection and Regulation of Sand Mining Act, 2001, mandates sand audit every three years. However in the last 13 years since the Act came in to force, the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) had conducted only two audits in the State - of Periyar in Ernakulam and Manimala flowing through Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts. Sand audit is now due in Ernakulam district. India's Sand Mafia: The Dark Secrets of India's Booming Construction Industry
India's building boom has spawned an illegal trade in sand. Plundering the environment and even killing those who get in its way, the "sand mafia" has spread its influence throughout India. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures Sand is the key to the construction industry, but there is no legal supply to meet the increasing demand. Accordingly, criminal gangs are ravaging riverbeds and beaches. Sumaira Abdulali recounts the damage done to her local beach: "the whole level of sand has dropped by about 10 feet ... They’ve really destroyed it". When she tried to report the perpetrators, she was met with fierce resistance. "They bashed up the car, broke everything. They hit all of us. They broke my teeth." Sumaira now campaigns to expose this black-market trade, which harms many living near sand supplies. Brijmohan Yadav, like many farmers in his region, had his plot devastated by illegal sand mining. However, his complaints were ignored: "the mafia is so influential. They have police and local authorities on their side". Brijmohan began to fight for his land, but ended up fighting for his life. "These people kidnapped me and took me to an isolated place. They beat me up and threatened to kill me if I did not stop all this." Whilst there is an almost blanket ban on unlicensed mining across India, in remote, rural areas it continues unabated. World Is Running Out Of Sand — Why There's Now A Black Market For It
If you're planning a beach vacation, you'd better get to it soon. An alarming statistic for you: 67% of Southern California beaches? GONE by 2100. All because of sand. You're reading this off something made with sand, looking at it through a screen made with sand, surrounded by buildings made with concrete. I could let you guess what's in concrete, but I suspect you're already catching onto a theme here. State Police Interrupt a Gold Mining Operation in Oregon!
Our mining claim neighbors called the Cops! People living on the other side of the river where our mining claim is and not liking our mining, called the cops. It appears our neighbors just did not want their liberal utopia disturbed so they call the cops to harass us. The police were very cool as I knew one of them from checking our permits on another river couple months earlier and an Oregon DEQ meeting he showed up at. The rude lady yells to at from other side of river "you need a permit to do that"...we had them of course. She also told cops we were disrespecful and rude to her...which was totally false. She made up her own narrative about what was happening to justify her being annoyed. Liberal tactic # 3, change the narrative or just plain lie! This is the short version of the video, filmed on the Applegate River in Oregon while we were LEGALLY GOLD MINING! In the video, it is a continuous video, shot on my GoPro camera that I was wearing on my head. The video shows me mining and moving around with no editing to show what actually goes on while mining. Then my buddy is helping me move rocks while I'm using a sub-surface dredge...then the cops show up , and I tell him is where the action starts. UPDATE Jan 1st, 2015: In response to some of the comments saying we are uneducated, rednecks and other stuff...the guys in the video are as follows. One is a millionaire CPA, another a self employed business owner, two others are also self employed and owns a body shop and the other an internet marketer and freelance videographer, and lastly one is the son of the CPA guy and currently in college. Oregon Mining Law: Next time this happens, I will ask the State Police to cite the offending people who disrupt our mining operation based on this Oregon Mining Law: "ORS 517.133 Interfering with a mining operation. (1) As used in this section, "lawful mining operation" means any small scale mining operation that is in full compliance with state and federal laws. (2) A person commits the crime of interfering with a mining operation if the person intentionally: (a) Interferes with a lawful mining operation; or (b) Stops, or causes to be stopped, a lawful mining operation. (3) Interfering with a mining operation is a Class C misdemeanor. [1999 c.354 §6]" Here is the GoPro camera I was using: http://amzn.to/19yYus6

Pounds and Pounds of Gold: I Mined Gold at Sterling Creek Mine | Glenn Wadstein
Glenn Wadstein mined Sterling Creek Mine from 1986-2001 and found pounds and pounds of gold. He built his own equipment and treated the job as a sand and gravel operation. Here's the equipment he built, the way he moved overburden to reveal the ore and how he processed the ore to filter out the gold. Wadstein took this video in 1986 at the outset of the mining operation, edited it into a clear and descriptive narrative and then converted the video to digital format in 2017. Wadstein narrated the video on October 22, 2017 at the Ashland Literary Arts Festival held Hannon Library, Southern Oregon University. What is BLACK SAND? What does BLACK SAND mean? BLACK SAND meaning, definition & explanation
What is BLACK SAND? What does BLACK SAND mean? BLACK SAND meaning - BLACK SAND definition - BLACK SAND explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Black sand is sand that is black in color. One type of black sand is a heavy, glossy, partly magnetic mixture of usually fine sands, found as part of a placer deposit. Another type of black sand, found on beaches near a volcano, consists of tiny fragments of basalt. While some beaches are predominantly made of black sand, even other colour beaches (e.g. gold and white) can often have deposits of black sand, particularly after storms. Larger waves can sort out sand grains leaving deposits of heavy minerals visible on the surface of erosion scarps. Black sands are used by miners and prospectors to indicate the presence of a placer formation. Placer mining activities produce a concentrate that is composed mostly of black sand. Black sand concentrates often contain additional valuables, other than precious metals: rare earth elements, thorium, titanium, tungsten, zirconium and others are often fractionated during igneous processes into a common mineral-suite that becomes black sands after weathering and erosion. Several gemstones, such as garnet, topaz, ruby, sapphire, and diamond are found in placers and in the course of placer mining, and sands of these gems are found in black sands and concentrates. Purple or ruby-colored garnet sand often forms a showy surface dressing on ocean beach placers. When lava contacts water, it cools rapidly and shatters into sand and fragmented debris of various size. Much of the debris is small enough to be considered sand. A large lava flow entering an ocean may produce enough basalt fragments to build a new black sand beach almost overnight. The famous "black sand" beaches of Hawaii, such as Punalu'u Beach and Kehena Beach, were created virtually instantaneously by the violent interaction between hot lava and sea water. Since a black sand beach is made by a lava flow in a one time event, they tend to be rather short lived since sands do not get replenished if currents or storms wash sand into deeper water. For this reason, the state of Hawaii has made it illegal to remove black sand from its beaches. Further, a black sand beach is vulnerable to being inundated by future lava flows, as was the case for Hawai'i's Kaimu, usually known simply as Black Sand Beach, and Kalapana beaches. An even shorter-lived black sand beach was Kamoamoa.Unlike with white and green sand beaches, walking barefoot on black sand can result in burns, as the black sand absorbs a greater fraction of the solar radiation falling upon it.

Putting More Sand on Carlsbad's Beaches
The City of Carlsbad is doing its part to make sure there's plenty of sand on local beaches. Beaches are replenished with sand through three different partnerships the City of Carlsbad has established with local and regional agencies. From September to December, the region's shoreline will be enhanced with more than 1.4 million cubic yards of high-quality sand, equal to about 120,000 truckloads. The San Diego Association of Governments, known as SANDAG is coordinating the $28.5 million Regional Beach Sand Project with support from community leaders in the coastal areas. Funding comes from the cities of Carlsbad, Encinitas, Imperial Beach, Oceanside, and Solana Beach, as well as the California Department of Boating and Waterways. Coastal erosion is the wearing away of land and the removal of beach or dune sediments by wave action, tidal currents, wave currents, or drainage. Changes in the surrounding landscape have reduced the amount of sand that makes it to our beaches naturally. Sand on beaches is also lost during winter storms when waves carry much of the sand back out to the ocean floor. That means sand needs to be added to keep up with beach erosion. In Carlsbad, about every two years, the Agua Hedionda Lagoon is dredged to replenish the beach sand. A large dredging vessel will collect sand by dredging the bottom of the lagoon mouth and pumping the sand to the beach. This dredging project could add up to about a half million cubic yards of sand to Carlsbad beaches. The Batiquitos Lagoon is also dredged every few years as needed to ensure the lagoon is healthy for fish and wildlife, and this provides sand for south Carlsbad beaches. The process includes dredging the bottom of the lagoon basin west of Interstate-5 to keep it deep enough to allow for the tides to keep the lagoon free from silt. Another benefit of the dredging is that it improves natural nesting areas for many endangered bird and fish species. The City of Carlsbad works on this project with the California Department of Fish and Game, which pays for this project. The goal of these partnership projects is to restore eroded beaches, support local tourism, and preserve recreational opportunities. So the next time you visit a Carlsbad beach, you'll know the beach sand is there in part because of Mother Nature and in part because of the strong partnerships between the City of Carlsbad and other agencies committed to preserving this essential part of the quality of life in Carlsbad.

Gonzaga, ecological destruction caused by black sand mining/magnetite mining
Illegal mining activities in Gonzaga (Cagayan, Phillipines) by Chinese companies Lian Xing Stone Carving Corporation en Huaxia Mining and Trading Corp. These companies are destroying the beautiful beaches without any interference by local, provincial or national authorities. The local mayor and business man, Carlito Pentecostes, endorses the destruction. Despite harsh protests from the local communities. Local environmentalist Esperlita Garcia is intimidated and threatened, barangay heads were forced to endorse the mining too. Even if it means the destruction of their barangay. The ecological and economical consequences for Gonzaga will be huge. Magnetite is mined also offshore and will be mined in the mountains. Officially this is considered 'small sale mining'. In reality it is large scale theft. Gonzaga is one of the many fronts in the 'sand wars' around the South Chinese or West Phillipine Sea. Main 'war mongers' are China and Singapore, hungry for sand and other raw materials. The magnetite of Gonzaga is shipped to China in Port Irene, a port controlled by the Enrile family. This very prowerful and influential family has done nothing to prevent the destruction of their homelands.
