Chile's Forgotten Mining Towns

08:51
United Nations - United Nations - It’s an almost forgotten story in Chile – the miners who toiled under the desert sun and helped fuel the rise of today’s modern nation. For more than a hundred years, the mines produced saltpeter - a key ingredient for both gunpowder and fertilizer. But these heritage sites – now ghost towns - could be lost forever. 21st Century, Episode #96 Script (Pdf): http://www.un.org/webcast/pdfs/21stc96chileforgotten.pdf

5 CREEPIEST GHOST Towns in the World

Abandoned places interest us because they’re reminders of what once was or could have been. Promising towns filled with people just like you or I who had their hopes and dreams crushed right before them. Chaiten, Chile Considered a modern version of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, the small town of Chaiten in the Los Lagos Region of Chile is among the latest victims of an abrupt and deadly volcanic eruption. A once thriving capital town, Chaiten’s destiny would change forever as the once quiet volcano nearby rumbled to life on May 2, 2008. The eruption grew increasingly violent and by May 5 it had spewed a deadly mixture of ash and sulfur 19 miles up into the Earth’s atmosphere – reaching across Patagonia and affecting infrastructure all the way in Argentina. 4. Pripyat, Ukraine Sitting 3 kilometers away from Chernobyl, the town of Pripyat in the Ukraine was once home to more than 49,000 people. Pripyat was founded on February 4, 1970 and deemed “a nuclear city” – a type of town created to serve the nearby Chernobyl reactor. Unlike other nuclear plants, Chernobyl was proclaimed as a “safer” type compared to others. Hence, the city of Pripyat was open to the general public and people could come and visit as they pleased. 3. Centralia, Pennsylvania In May of 1962, the lives of the residents of Centralia would forever change. It was the day before Memorial Day and the people were preparing for festivities However, they needed to settle one matter, how to clean up the town landfill. Although several options were offered, they settled on simply burning the trash in the 300 by 75-foot dumping ground After all, it was a common thing to do and it had been done many times before. According to the story, five volunteer firemen proceeded to light the trash on fire and let it burn for some time before extinguishing it. 2. Humberstone & La Noria Considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Humberstone and La Noria were former saltpeter refineries that sat in the middle of the Atacama Desert in Northern Chile. Humberstone is named after British chemical engineer, James Humberstone. He emigrated to the country in 1875 and became a saltpeter mogul, digging his way through the nitrate-rich crust of the desert. Described as “white gold,” almost all of the world’s saltpetre had come from the Atacama Desert. It was in such a huge demand as fertilizer in fast industrializing countries that during the 1880s to the 1930s, it was the main product exported from Chile. 1. Hashima Island, Japan (Gukanjima) Another mining facility on this list is the famous “Gukanjima,” known officially as Hashima – although few people call it that. In the Western World, it’s often known as “Battleship Island” because of its unusual shape. This abandoned island lies 20-minutes off the coast of Nagasaki- a city that once was considered the most densely populated on Earth. Now, it’s most visited structure is the Atomic Bomb Museum. so those were 5 of the Creepiest Ghost Towns in the World Humans have transformed the face of the planet.. These settlements were once filled with people - their hopes, dreams and tears all tied to them. Now all that’s left are crumbling buildings and memories of what once was.

Sewell, Mining Town in The Andes | The City of Stairs, Chile

05:13
Sewell, Mining Town in The Andes | The City of Stairs, Chile The mining town of Sewell is located on the slopes of the Andes on Cerro Negro at an altitude of between 2,000 and 2,500 metres. It is 50 miles south of Santiago and 26 miles up the mountain from Rancagua. First called El Teniente, the town was once an isolated copper mine but is now an uninhabited historical site and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has been recognized as a great cultural and architectural work, a unique mountain community that defied the elements and the difficulties to prosper: the only one like it in Chile. Sewell is known as the "city of stairs", housed miners and employees who worked in what was the world's largest underground mine, El Teniente. Copper deposits were known to exist at el Teniente from the 15th century when raw materials were exported by the Spanish. In 1897 the owner of the mining rights initiated a survey of the copper seams and discovered a huge potential for extracting copper which would require great investment. An approach was made in 1903 to the North American mining engineer William Braden. Braden arrived in Chile in 1904 and began acquiring the property. Together with E W Nash, president of the American Smelting Company and Barton Sewell, the founder and Vice-President they created the Braden Copper Company in 1904. In 1905 they bought the Chilean copper mine. In 1915 the town was re-named Sewell after Barton Sewell the company’s first president. Over the next two years the infrastructure was developed and machinery was imported from the United States. By 1906 the first mill and concentrator had been erected, a lift and electricity generator installed. The installations were cutting edge technology of the day to be used in an extremely remote and hostile environment. Mining was officially authorised to begin in 1905. A narrow gauge railroad line between Sewell and Rancagua was started in 1907 and was in full use by 1911. The operation base and administrative headquarters were located at Rancagua which rapidly developed into a town. A new town was developed at Sewell where the mine was located. Electricity was generated at Coya and the huge buckets of the copper ore snaked down the hill to the smelted works at Caletones. By 1918 the Sewell mining camp housed 14,000 people, but was largely abandoned in the 1970s. The town was built on a terrain too steep for wheeled vehicles around a large central staircase rising from the railway station. Along its route formal squares of irregular shape with ornamental trees and plants constituted the main public spaces or squares of the town. Off the central staircase, paths ran along the contours leading to smaller squares and secondary staircases linking the town’s different levels. The buildings lining the streets are timber, often painted in vivid green, yellow, red and blue. By the early 1960s it had a population of 16,000, men, women and children of many nationalities. Despite all goods having to be brought in by narrow gauge railroad the camp was a complete city in itself. The railroad was also the only way in for the workers and their families. Sewell was known as the city of stairs as there were no roads. The mine became the largest and deepest underground mine in the world, with about nine hundred miles of underground galleries. After the death of Barton Sewell in 1915, the Guggenheim brothers began to open new copper mines in the north of Chile and took control of the Braden Copper Company, by 1916 they owned 95 percent of the company. Despite being prosperous, conditions at the mine were hard and dangerous. In 1945 a major tragedy occurred when a fire in the entrance to the mine caused smoke to enter the galleries below causing the deaths of 355 workers. This led to a government investigation and a national debate on safety legislation and the power wielded by foreign companies. The company responded by developing a large department for industrial safety. By the 1950s Chile had become the second largest copper producer in the world. In 1967 the Chilean government gained a 51% share of the mine and in 1971 the industry was nationalised and the company became a division of the Copper Corporation of Chile. This brought changes and a decision was taken to move the population of Sewell further down the valley, in order to provide better facilities and soon after 1977 it was dismantled. Sewell is the only mountain industrial mining settlement of considerable size of the 20th century to have been built for year-round use. Ghost towns - Chaiten, Chile

00:57
Chaitén is a Chilean town, commune and former capital of the Palena Province in Los Lagos Region. The town is located north of the mouth of Yelcho River, on the east coast of the Gulf of Corcovado. The town is strategically located close to the northern end of the Carretera Austral where the highway goes inland. On May 2, 2008 the vast caldera of the Chaitén volcano, two miles in diameter, rumbled to life. The eruptions became increasingly violent until, on May 5, the volcano spewed a toxic plume of ash and sulfurous steam some 19 miles into the atmosphere. But it wasn’t until the following week that Chaitén’s death-knell was finally dealt. On May 12, 2008 the lahar flow caused by the ongoing eruptions of the nearby Volcano forced the river to overflow dramatically. As the pyroclastic mud consumed the valley, it drove its deadly course through the evacuated town, consuming anything that stood in its way. Despite attempts by the authorities to shore up the devastated settlement against future volcanic activity, the government decided to abandon Chaitén and rehouse its residents elsewhere. They left behind a foreboding ghost town – a cautionary tale of the dangers of living within the indiscriminate reach of an active volcano. The ash-covered settlement appeared ghostly in the aftermath of the eruption, its colourful buildings appearing ghost-like beneath a thick blanket of grey. Chile: Calbuco eruption leaves local town abandoned, enveloped in ash

01:08
The Chilean town of Ensenada was evacuated and left covered with ash on Thursday, after the Calbuco volcano erupted for the first time in 42 years on Wednesday, spewing thick clouds of ash and smoke several kilometres into the sky. Around 1,500 residents from the nearby town were evacuated, while the government has declared a red alert. At least one of the settlement's bridges was left in ruins after landslides related to the eruption destroyed the structures. One of the country's most dangerous volcanoes, Calbuco last erupted in 1972. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ To use this footage please contact the Ruptly Client Desk: [email protected] Video ID: 20150423-089 ---------------------------------- Twitter: http://twitter.com/Ruptly VK: https://vk.com/ruptlytv Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/Ruptly LiveLeak: http://www.liveleak.com/c/Ruptly Vine: https://vine.co/Ruptly Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/Ruptly Google Plus: http://google.com/+RuptlyTV YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/RuptlyTV DailyMotion: http://www.dailymotion.com/ruptly Video on Demand: http://www.ruptly.tv

Situated in the remote desert Pampa, one of the driest deserts on earth, thousands of pampinos lived and worked in this hostile environment, for over 60 years, from 1880, to process the largest deposit of saltpeter in the world, producing the fertilizer sodium nitrate that was to transform agricultural lands in North and South America, and in Europe, and produce great wealth for Chile. Because of the vulnerability of the structures and because of the impact of a recent earthquake, the site was also placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger, to help mobilize resources for its conservation. 6-inch skeleton mysterious found in Chile’s Atacama Desert has perplexed by researchers

02:41
6-inch skeleton mysterious found in Chile’s Atacama Desert has perplexed by researchers. When the mummified remains of a six-inch humanoid were found in an abandoned mining town in Chile’s Atacama desert 15 years ago, speculation on its origins ran wild. The skeleton, which was sold to a private collector in Spain, was so bizarre it appeared in a documentary as potential evidence for alien life. Now scientists in California have extracted DNA from the mummy’s bones and pieced together the real and tragic story of the individual, known as Ata. Rather than a visitor from another world, Ata was a girl who appears to have been stillborn, or to have died immediately after birth, with devastating mutations that shaped her extraordinary body. Ata’s remains were found in 2003 in La Noria, an old nitrate-mining town, reportedly wrapped in white cloth tied with a violet ribbon. The skeleton was remarkable in many ways. While only six inches tall, the bones had some features of a child aged six to eight. Instead of the usual 12 pairs of ribs found on humans, Ata had only 10 pairs. The head was an elongated cone shape. DNA analysis reveals that her appearance can be explained by a series of genetic mutations that are linked to dwarfism and other bone and growth disorders. The skeleton is most likely from a premature baby, or from one soon after birth. Sanchita Bhattacharya, a researcher at UCSF said she found 64 gene variants in 'Ata's DNA that seemed likely to be damaging. She found that, incredibly, 10 of the variations were linked to skeletal problems including 'short stature' and '11 pairs of ribs'. Beyond her skeletal malformations, Ata may have had a genetic condition known as congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Garry Nolan, a professor of microbiology and immunology at the Stanford University School of Medicine said; 'Nothing like this had been seen before. Certainly, nobody had looked into the genetics of it.' The girl's cone-shaped skull remains a mystery even after the genetic analysis. It has previously been suggested that the unusual shape could have been caused by a condition known as oxcephaly, or turricephaly. 'While this started as a story about aliens, and went international, it's really a story of a human tragedy. 'A woman had a malformed baby, it was preserved in a manner and then "hocked" or sold as a strange artefact. May she rest in peace.' **************** *********Copyright Issues: Please contact us by email or Facebook message and add title COPYRIGHT ISSUE. On Ghost Towns: Abandoned Buildings and Deserted Cities

04:27
Ghost towns are not for everybody, but I totally love them. For this video I visited the following locations: - Epecuen (Argentina): A popular lakeside resort in the roaring ‘20s, and then, disaster stroke… The abandoned slaughterhouse and adjacent dead forest are a perfect location for a horror movie. - Gbecon (Benin): A.k.a “Les Comptoirs Coloniaux de Gbecon”. Among the fantastic deserted beaches of Grand Popo, a colonial outpost that was used to trade slaves, spices and other goods. - Estancia San Gregorio (Chile): Truly at the end of the world, an overwhelming mixture of abandoned colonial village and Antarctica outpost. This ghost town is chilling: dilapidated colonial buildings from 1876 on a deserted beach with rusting wrecks of 19th-century British steamships. Watch the sunset and enjoy the total darkness, total solitude and total silence. - Ada Foah (Ghana): A beach cemetery, an old Presbyterian church, the ruins of a colonial fort, and some dilapidated colonial buildings hosting wild hogs. The presence of humans (i.e. kids asking for money and adults using the fort as a public toilet) spoils the atmosphere. What better way to conclude the year as to recapture one of its outstanding highlights by revisiting Finnish Symphonic Metal legends NIGHTWISH taking the likewise legendary Wacken Open Air by storm? After being decorated with triple platinum status in Finland as well as gold status in numerous European countries (Germany, Switzerland, Poland, among others) for their most current studio masterpiece »Imaginaerum« and following the highly successful release of their very own fantasy motion picture »Imaginaerum by Nightwish«, the band is closing in its cycle of the `Imaginaerum World Tour´ with a festival triple -- Wacken Open Air being the first of those final shows. The `Imaginaerum World Tour´ 2013-2013 visited in 34 countries, consisted of 104 shows with total audience attendance of over 1,5 million fans. And what would be a better way to celebrate the grand finale as to capture the entire show at Wacken Open Air -- the world's biggest heavy metal festival -- for a live DVD/Blu-ray? The live show in the front of 85 000 screaming metalheads was directed by Ville Lipiäinen, filmed with seventeen cameras and has a total duration of 85 minutes. Mastermind and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen states: "The time has come soon to wrap up the magical & memorable one-and-a-half year `Imaginaerum World Tour´ 2012-2013! We still have three shows left, one of them being at the legendary Wacken Open Air Metal Festival on the 3rd of August. This show will be something extra special, since it will be released later this year on DVD/Blu-ray, together with a massive `Imaginaerum World Tour´ 2012-2013 documentary. Our darling flying Dutchwoman, Floor Jansen, has been nothing but incredible during her time in Nightwish on this tour, so this is a perfect opportunity to immortalize the current vibe of the band on film! " The second disc consists of 120-minute tour documentary 'Please Learn The Setlist in 48 Hours', with no short of drama or overall madness. Also, there is a 16-minute NIGHTWISH Table Hockey Tournament, filmed on tour. On top of this there are two music clips: 'I want my tears back' (Live at Hartwall Arena) and 'Ghost Love Score' (Live in Buenos Aires). DVD 1 Track List: 01. Dark Chest Of Wonders 02. Wish I Had An Angel 03. She Is My Sin 04. Ghost River 05. Ever Dream 06. Storytime 07. I Want My Tears Back 08. Nemo 09. Last Of The Wilds 10. Bless The Child 11. Romanticide 12. Amaranth 13. Abandoned Places NO ONE Knows About

10:11
There are so many abandoned places around the globe which often leave you with more questions than they do answers! Why was it abandoned? Who lived there? Why has nothing been rebuilt on that site? Today we globe trot to some of these abandoned places and homes and learn more about their sad tales that had them abandoned forever. Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 11 - Humberstone, Chile… Once upon a time, this used to be a bustling little town. From the 1920’s through till the early 40’s, residents benefited from the wealth that the mining of saltpeter that the area generated. When a synthetic version of saltpeter was created, well, that was the end of the little town. By 1961 it was completely empty and now with the continuous blowing of sand from nearby desserts, deterioration has happened rapidly. Luckily, it’s now been named a World Heritage Site, so it’s likely the area will see conservation efforts taking place soon. 10 - Quneitra, Syria… Hard to believe that Quneitra used to be the capital of the region, so, what happened? Israeli forces captured Quneitra in 1967. Syrian forces managed to reclaim it in 1974, however their victory was short-lived as the Israeli’s got it back very quickly. The city ended up being destroyed that same year, and the Syrian government refuse to do anything to it. As you see it now, is how it’s been ever since. 9 - Discover Hut, Antarctica… This little hut, located on Ross Island, Antarctica, was built by Robert Falcon Scott in 1902. It was used during the Discovery Expedition which began in 1901 and ended in 1904. The hut was used for a few more expeditions thereafter, but eventually ended up losing to the ice and snow. In 1956 the hut was dug up and found to be perfectly preserved and exactly as it was left in 1917. It’s on the World Monuments Watch list of 100 of the most endangered sites in the world. 8 - Reschensee, Graun, Italy… This is a most unusual spot and it’s an entire village that lies underneath an artificial lake. There are 163 buildings there, although you can only see the bell tower. The village was submerged to ensure seasonal power was available to Graun and Reschen. In the middle of winter, you can walk across the frozen lake and see the bell tower up close. 7 - Wittenoom, Australia… Once home to 20,000 people, Wittenoom is now empty. Easy to understand why though, as this town used to mine asbestos! When people became more aware of the dangers involved with asbestos, the mines were shut in the 60’s. Tragically, 1,000 people were permanently affected by asbestos-related illnesses. Today there are only 8 people who live there and you can still see asbestos fibers littering the city’s streets. 6 - Spinalonga, Crete, Greece… It’s been more than 60-years that Spinalonga has been closed. This was the oldest leper colony in Europe and the last person who lived there left in 1962. It operated from 1903 and was often referred to as ‘Dante’s Tunnel’ and many who entered the island were not sure of their fate, but it’s been said they were treated very well, receiving food, water and care. 5 - Chatterley Whitfield Colliery Stoke-on-Trent, UK… This is a photographer’s dream! Across the UK it’s not uncommon to find abandoned coal mines, but this one is quite picturesque. It began mining coal in 1863 and worked right through till 1974 and was officially the first coal mine to produce 1 million tons of coal in a year. The mine was made into a museum, but it was shut down in 1993 and the site has been lifeless since then. 4 - Phnom Bokor, Kampot Province, Cambodia… This empty spot used to be a resort that was built by the French in the 1920’s who couldn’t handle the hot, humid and wet summers in Cambodia. The building of the fort was torturous and claimed the lives of 900! The resort was abandoned in the 1940’s and is now quite easy to access if you so desire. City of Ghosts was filmed there as well as R-Point. 3 - Kirby Hall, Gretton, England… The only thing you’ll find wandering these halls are probably the ghosts of those that once lived in this beautiful home. It used to be belong to Sir Christopher Hatton who was Lord Chancellor to Queen Elizabeth the 1st. Building began in 1570, but today many parts of the building are roofless. Why it’s been left to get this way is not very clear, but it’s also been the site of many films and series. 2 - Agdam, Azerbaijan… In its heyday, 150,000 people once lived in Agdam. The city was lost in 1993 during the Nagorno Karabakh fighting and was just left to vandalism. The buildings were gutted and no one has lived there since 1993, having moved to other parts of Azerbaijan or Iran. 1...

36:46
In the middle of the driest desert in the world lies the small town of Chuquicamata, Chile, also known as "Chuqui." A mine of the same name that gave birth to the town almost 100 years ago has now become the cause of its imminent demise. As the doors of Chuqui close, the last of the residents take a final look at a town that will eventually be buried forever under mountains of extracted dirt from the mine. Directed by Jay Heinz.

Scientists reveal the story of 6-inch Atacama 'Alien' who had Dwarfism and Aged 6

03:00
May she rest in peace.' Atacama ‘Humanoid’ Mummy Mystery Revealed With DNA Analysis The body was in a bag on a shelf in a house next to a church in a small, abandoned nitrate mining town in the Atacama Desert of Chile. It was dry, mummified, largely intact, had the proportions of an adult, and measured only 6 inches long. But Ata, as the specimen would come to be known, was unlike any other human found before. That’s why a team of researchers in California came together to analyze her DNA. The analysis revealed that the person had several mutations that were likely fatal and that explained her otherworldly appearance. Atacama The Atacama skeleton is only about 6 inches long. Top Most Terrifying Haunted Locations in the World.

01:15:35
4 most haunted locations in the world, CREEPIEST PLACES on Earth, Japan's Suicide Forest, Haunted Hoia-Baciu Forest, Haunted Mining Town La Noria, Atacama Desert- Chile, Erin Ryder, Destination Truth talks about some of her most SCARIEST PLACES on location and paranormal experiences explored by the team. PLEASE SUBSCRIBE! AOKIGAHARA FOREST: is a forest in the base of Mount Fuji where more than 100 suicides happens in the woods each year. The forest is said to have been charged with paranormal energy that malfunctions compasses and other navigation devices. No sounds can be heard other than those produced by the forest itself. Aokigahara is considered the most haunted location in all of Japan. Spiritualists say that the trees themselves are filled with a malevolent energy, accumulated from centuries of suicides.A crowded, dark forest bordering Mt. Fuji, Aokigahara is infamous throughout Japan as a popular spot for those taking their final journey. In 2002, 78 bodies were found within it. By May 2006, at least 16 new suicides had been found. No one knows how many bodies go undiscovered. Signs emblazoned with messages are nailed to trees throughout the forest. HOIA-BACIU Woods, close to the city of Cluj in Transylvania, Romania, is the site of strange paranormal phenomena which have been recorded and researched for nearly 50 years. The woods are thought to be notoriously haunted by the Romanian peasants who were murdered here. It is believed that the souls of these ghosts are trapped within the wooded confines of Hoia-Baciu and that the ghosts are enraged by their predicament. Within the dark interior, people have been known to disappear, strange lights have been seen, the wind seems to speak, and visions of these tormented spirits are observed by terrified travelers. Pairs of green eyes and a black fog have been observed here and many people report a feeling of being watched as they travel near the forest's edge. Locals also believe that there is a hub for this paranormal activity— a circular plateau deep in the forest which is devoid of trees and which is thought to be the "home" of these ghosts. Photos taken here have been developed to reveal hovering shapes and outlines of human forms. HAUNTED MINING TOWN: An abandoned mining town in northern Chile to investigate leads of its haunting history. Believed to have one of the scariest cemeteries on Earth, the town is said to have the dead rise from their graves at night and walk back into the city, where most of the locals have had some sort of paranormal encounter. These suffering energies are traced back by many to the poor treatment of the workers from the mine akin to slavery as the mining barons profited from their suffering.
