Stop Marine Plastic Pollution -- Ask Producers to Help Save our Seas and $8 billion per year!

02:02
Plastic that pollutes our oceans and waterways has severe impacts on our environment and our economy. Seabirds, whales, sea turtles and other marine life are eating marine plastic pollution and dying from choking, intestinal blockage and starvation. Scientists are investigating the long-term impacts of toxic pollutants absorbed, transported, and consumed by fish and other marine life, including the potential effects on human health. This pollution also has huge costs for taxpayers and local governments that must clean this trash off of beaches and streets to protect public health, prevent flooding from trash-blocked storm drains, and avoid lost tourism revenue from filthy beaches. So who's responsible? We all need to do our fair share to stop plastic pollution: individuals need to recycle and never litter, but producers of single use plastic packaging need to do more too. We need producers to design packaging so that it is fully recyclable, and so there is less waste. We also need producers to help cover the costs of keeping their products out of the ocean. Join NRDC and a growing coalition of business, community, and environmental groups to support producer responsibility for marine plastic pollution: www.stopplasticpollution.org

Gabe Brown, owner of Brown's Ranch in Bismarck, North Dakota, is NRDC's 2012 Growing Green Awards winner in the Food Producer category. For over 15 years, Gabe has merged back-to-basics agrarian practices with innovative science-based sustainable farming techniques on his 5,400 acre diversified family ranch. For Gabe, healthy soil is the renewable resource that sustains all. By making use of a 100 percent zero-till cropping system, mob grazing, and polyculture cover crop and polyculture cash crop rotations, he has successfully transformed conventional grazing and cropping operations into models of regenerative agriculture. Brown's Ranch also integrates its cow-calf and grass finished livestock operations with a highly diverse cropping rotation, which includes over 25 different cash and cover crops resulting in high yields and strong net profits. NRDC Report on Chemicals in Food: Too Often Their Safety is Secret

02:55
Congress created an unsettling loophole in The Food Additives Amendment of 1958, which has allowed food ingredients to bypass U.S. Food and Drug Administration review as long as they are "Generally Recognized as Safe." A half century later, hundreds, even thousands, of uncommon chemicals with unpronounceable names have been added to our food without FDA oversight. The loophole would be better known as "Generally Recognized as Secret."
